Jan-05-02, 06:43 PM (EST) "Engineers and MSTS" I'm just one of the many actual engineers that enjoy train simming. And so much more because of this site and those of you who have done the work to provide all the diverse freeware to enhance the game. I know of a few of us from Ohio that are quite impressed with the realism. Special thanks to those of you who have tweaked the performance of the units and made things so realistic with train handling. I have 5 years with the WLE. I've never been dulled by the hobby of simming even after a 12 hour hoglaw day, fighting to get over the road with typical railroad stress. I don't know how to thank those of you who continue the unbelievable favor of providing all the diverse freeware. I think I enjoy most the time travel possible here. I guess the Wheeling is a timetravel in itself with their fleet of SD40's and GP35's. But for me, nothing at work can compare to getting on the computer, and climbing into the cab of 3 Chessie SD50's on a coal drag for a trip up the EMRR at dusk. Or bobbing along in a WM F7, leading a couple of old C&O geeps and a colorful 70's era eastern freight, all the fallen flags still proudly showing their colors on the long gone rolling stock. I grew up along the Chessie right of way, and would ride with the crews. By time I went railroading the chessie was gone, I never got to run F's, geeps, or over the rails that inspired me. It was all history. But not on MSTS. And little things like the EMRR route, the whistle I found that matches the old Chessie 5 chimer, and the guy in the Chessie baywindow cab that resembles a boyhood brakeman friend are priceless. Just the thanks I thought I owed here. Keep 'em rolling guys. Special thanks to Ray for so quickly getting me the Chessie GP30 in CLW's hiatus. I'm glad to see sim railroaders seem to look out for each other just as the real ones do. Jason Roberts. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-05-02, 07:07 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Engineers and MSTS" Jason.....Welcome aboard! I grew up near the old Norfolk And Western Watkins Yard in southern Columbus,Ohio. My stepfather worked 30 years on the C&O and my nephew is now an engineer on the Big Sandy out of Russel KY. He is near retirement also so you can see if have had a long association with trains in the Ohio area. My favorite passtime as a child was to hang around the Parson Ave C&O yard with it's roundhouse and turntable. Both of which are still standing and operating, at least they were the last time I was in the neighborhood. The roundhouse is a mear portion of it's size in the glory days. A few of the yard buildings are still standing also. There is a fine complete C&O passenger train with "F" units available on the Train-Sim site. I have it installed it's beautiful!! My thanks to the guys who put it on the site. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-05-02, 11:30 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Engineers and MSTS" Thanks Joe.....I'm glad to be aboard. And I love the C&O passenger set....I jumped right on it when you mentioned it. Only problem is I'm liable to "get some time off" from Microsoft......I tend to get her rolling along, set the throttle at a good spot, hit 5 and slip back into the OBS to sip that martini. But that's how they used to railroad anyway.....*grin*. Jason. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-05-02, 10:14 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Engineers and MSTS" Hey where you from? I live in Akron, I can hit Brittain Yard with an 8 iron from my front yard. I've already started to model Akron in it's entirety (sp?). I have Brittain Yard trackage done, and quite a bit heading west. I have the Eastwood Ave area done, North Akron Yard too, and now I'm working on the Valley area. I'm modelling in the 50's to late 60's era so I can try to recreate some of the heyday of Akron railroading, but you'll be able to use W&LE stuff on my route if you want to pretend that the rubber factories didn't take their production to China in the late 70's and 80's. The Phoebe Snow used to run through Akron, as well as the Capitol Limited too. In fact, the Capitol Limited was the last passenger train to run through Akron on 1 May 1971 (the day Amtrak was formed) until 1990 when Amtrak finally routed through here again. Eventually I'd like to head south into Canton, Massillon, and maybe even Brewster, but it's going to take forever just to get Akron right. I work for Akron PD and I used to drive through Brittain Yard between calls, but now they have fences up so I can't do that anymore, bummer.Drop me a line, you can be a beta tester for my route. I wouldn't mind getting hold of some W&LE track maps too....(wink wink nudge nudge....)Jeff Leslie Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-05-02, 11:24 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Engineers and MSTS" Hey Jeff.....I'd be glad to help out. I have a few track charts from the AC&Y, as well as some shots from the cab going west toward Spencer. I ran out of there quite often when I was first set up but then went on to work in Brewster as my seniority grew. Hey I'm gonna drop you an email.....And about the Wheeling.....Have you noticed that the high hood GP35 in Deko's pack is actually the Wheeling 2651?....The Southern lettering is gone and it even has the old alco trucks that are on those units. It makes a nice match for the WLE 4003 SD40 out of the library here. The only part that's off is that it's set up long hood lead, the old SOU 35's are actually bi directional, with the stand at a 90 degree angle to the side of the cab, on the normal engineers side. But I sure am happy to have it as part of my roster. I kinda like the longhood lead setup....Anyway.....Keep 'em rolling....Jason. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
