Jan-02-02, 03:29 PM (EST) "SOMEONE MUST BRING ALIVE TURNTABLES!" After listening to the turntable sounds in the trainsim directory, I decided that something needs to be done.
I am asking ANYONE, do you have ANY idea on what would need to be done to do this? I am not a total expert at the code for train sim, but I am willing to give anything a try, and help anybody who wishes to take this challenge up with everythig I have. PLEEEESE someone help me make that cranky sound come alive! Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I'm currently fixing the front coupler and I've got 15 ideas on how to make the damn turntable to work but I'm to busy to try them alone yet. If your interested in working on it with me e-mail me at TOPDOG5184@pikeonline.net it's long I know but I'm here if ya need help. Together we can nick this thing in the butt. whatya say? Jan-02-02, 09:12 PM (EST) 3. "RE: SOMEONE MUST BRING ALIVE TURNTABLES!" ohh yes it will. it's just a matter of IQ and a distinct matter of wanting it bad enough. We'll get it. trust me. I got the coupler to sorta work. the turtable should be easier. Craig Shortino Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-02-02, 09:46 PM (EST) 4. "RE: SOMEONE MUST BRING ALIVE TURNTABLES!" I think that you're about half-right. It might not be much of a problem to animate a turntable object. That is, of course, not the same as having a working turntable. That would require driving the loco up on the thing, having it turn, and ending up with your loco facing the other way. Therein lies the hard (probably impossible) part. The track would have to move, the endpoints separate, and reattach again, with a train on it, and not be detected as a derailment or even a fatal error. Then, there's the issue of triggering the animation. Has anyone even figured out how to do animation that is based on a trigger (like the crossing gates, switches, etc.), and not an existing trigger like for signal arms, but a completely new trigger?I am not saying that it is impossible, but there are some serious hurdles to overcome if it is. If you want to try, I wish you the best of luck, but IQ is not a factor: some of the best and brightest innovators, who have come up with so many fixes and wonderful things for this sim, have tried and failed.troub

Jan-02-02, 10:29 PM (EST) 6. "RE: SOMEONE MUST BRING ALIVE TURNTABLES!" Basically to make animated turntables work in MSTS you need to write every single line of code necessary to make them work. They have not one character of code in the program allocated to them as anything other than as a "dumb" object. Not to play Nietszche but... if you can animate them by writing all that code, you should not bother. You should just go code your own train sim... It'd be nearly the same amount of work and much more rewarding -Andy

>the turtable should be easier. Dream On!! Several people have tried and failed... this optimism is the result of ahving a lot of new people on the forum since christmas! The reason you really cant have a working turntable is because the hard coding of MSTS won't allow it! You can't turn a locomotive around and drive a route the other way! Trust me on this IT WON'T WORK!!!Up to you if you want to try it, but until V2 of MSTS is released it just won't work OK!Best Regards,

I'm merely saying it is a matter of knowing what to do. people often overlook the simplist things. I have 15 ways. how many did captain bazza have? what did he try? what am I going to try? see what I'm getting at? it's a matter of giving the dumbest things that are overlooked a try. I will try my best with Sirshuntalot to get it to work. if it has a sound file it must be in the coding to work obviously. We'll get back to you all on that one. Jan-03-02, 07:10 PM (EST) 12. "RE: SOMEONE MUST BRING ALIVE TURNTABLES!" LAST EDITED ON Jan-03-02 AT 07:30 PM (EST)I have to agree with TOPDOG on this, its not imposible, it will just take a lot of work, and about the "Triggering an Animation" thing, what about the fuel pump on the marias pass route, its only "Animated" when you drive up to it and press the 'T' key. And for FozzyBear, yes you can turn a locomotive arround and drive a route the other way, what about all the "Wyes" and "Loops" in the routes, you are "turning the locomotive arround and driveing the other way" right there, I know thats a lot diffrent then a turn table but still has the same concept. I beleive it is entirely posible, but the hardest part will be the "un-attatching" and "re-attatching" of track once u drive onto the turntable and spin arround, you will need it to kind of "Snap" to the track sections because if they arent lined up PERFECTLY the train will derail when you try to drive off the turn table. And another hard thing, you will have to make the animation work even if the train is not on the turn table, like when your waiting to get on it, if the track on the turn table is not aligned with the track your on you will have to be able to get it to spin arround to line up with the track section your engine is sitting on (i.e. if the track sections are like this -| , "-" being the track your engine is on, and "|" being the turntable, you will need to be able to turn it to line up with the track you are on like this -- , so that you can then drive onto the turn table)------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok im updateing my post, I have a few more thoughts on the subject...Maby you could make it work somewhat like the switches in the game. You drive up to it, press the 'G' key to get it to turn tward you, then drive onto it and press the 'G' key again to get it to turn arround, if there is more then one set of tracks leading off of it, maby we could get it to work where every time u press 'G' it would turn to the next peice of track on the right, or something similar to that.TrevorPS, TOPDOG, I will also try and help you complete this task, though I know very little about codeing MSTS or Animateing objects, I could still help with developing ideas about how we can aclompish this. Jan-03-02, 07:11 PM (EST) 13. "RE: SOMEONE MUST BRING ALIVE TURNTABLES!" I found an add-on called xtracks.zip (sorry, cannot remember where I downloaded it from) that has the description of: "Slips, turntable, narrow gauge and other pieces. Extra track sections for route developers. Installer with instructions. By OkrasaGhia." Have not yet installed this or tried to create a route with the turntable, but knock on wood.Richard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-03-02, 07:22 PM (EST) 14. "RE: SOMEONE MUST BRING ALIVE TURNTABLES!" I havent seen this download yet but im guesing the Turn Tabel in this pack is just a "static" object (meaning it is jut for looks and dosnt have much to do with operation of tracks or trains). But of course I could be wrong, im just guesing they made a new turn table to match the narrow gauge rails a little better. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-03-02, 08:47 PM (EST) 15. "RE: SOMEONE MUST BRING ALIVE TURNTABLES!" ok. here we go: 1) Okrasa's tracks are here and the turn tavle doesn't work. it's a static object. 2) that is exactly what I want to do. make the turntable like a switch. press G to turn it. 3) try to do this without rewriting the code. 4) get more than one person.lol. Sirshuntalot and tro1086 you have mail. Craig Shortino Sending the turntable " to the moon" as someone said above. ( sort of.lol. ) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-03-02, 09:50 PM (EST) 16. "RE: SOMEONE MUST BRING ALIVE TURNTABLES!" Been there, tried that, except I didn't try the idea of making it a special 'track' item, there is no useful documentation. Having said that, someone has obviously found a way to make tracks and points.Animation: No problem, basically three frames, depending how you trigger the action. Maybe more frames to 'slow' the turntable if using other techniques.Bounding Box: You need to write an SD file making the turntable a solid object allow the loco to sit correctly on the railhead and not fall thru the model.Turning the actual loco shouldn't, theoretically, have any effect on the loco's animation, but TS does have a nasty habit of biting back, usually on your southern aspect. But it all comes back to how you trigger the event, etc.Nice to see someone taking on the problem, Craig. Good luck.

Jan-04-02, 05:56 PM (EST) 19. "Has anyone animated any switches?" Has anyone, who has made his own track pieces, made any switches? How do they work, I guess the parts must be named correctly for the switch to switch from one track part to another? If there was a turntable available in the game, it propably would have been hard coded so that it would turn using the key G, like ordinary switches. And in route editor, it would be a special switch that would have multiple points to connect to... or something like that, I haven't tried editing routes yet. How switches are placed there? So investigating switches might give some clues about the turntable. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-04-02, 08:23 PM (EST) 20. "RE: Has anyone animated any switches?" Switches are coded so as only to point to two branches, 3 if you count the origin. If one did make a turntable that worked as a switch it could only point to 3 tracks. Also if your train is on a switch, it either can't switch or when it switches you get thrown. Also if you wanted to have AI trains and they went anywhere near the turntable all kinds of bad things would happen with signal stalling. See why a turntable can't easily be a modified switch?-Andy
