Dec-21-01, 07:16 PM (EST) "Who is Robert Murphy?" On the front page of train-sim.com is somebody named Robert Murphy complaining about our complainers. Question: Who is Robert Murphy? And what is Op-Ed... I don't recall seeing this before. And why'd he pick this particular beef now when there has been already a million others? Just when you think its starting to get civil around here again, off goes another war and I haven't a clue what in the world he's talking about. So who is this guy anyway? Just asking...Rich Garber Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-21-01, 07:59 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Who is Robert Murphy?" Well, I just read it, I dunno who he is, altho it would appear he's affiliated with Trainartisan. I'm also baffled why you failed to understand his message, it seemed pretty clear to me, he's asking the boys to play nice. Whether there is an awful lot of flaming or a little bit of flaming on this forum depends on your point of view, but there are (my view) a few individuals who just seem to be mean-spirited, and attack freeware authors and people expressing opinions just because that's how they get their rocks off. If you only get a few of those out of 5000 members I think you're doing pretty good, but as a white guy who grew up in and still lives in a mostly black neighborhood possibly my expectations are lower. If I go a whole month without being threatened or attacked by some low-life punks who have nothing better to do with their time than stand around on street corners acting like the black version of the KKK, I consider that pretty good. The overwhelming majority of the black people I know are very decent and not prejudiced against whites, but it only takes one such confrontation with a black thug to make a lot of white people shy away, and consider any black to be dangerous until proven otherwise.
Sometimes it's merely a matter of misunderstanding, the guy didn't mean it that way, expressed himself poorly, or is under the impression he's talking about Microsoft, not us. As far as I'm concerned Microsoft is fair game, if they cared about their customers more they wouldn't get all the flaming they so richly deserve. Keeping it within bounds is tricky, freedom of speech versus politeness, you want lively discussions or you want people carefully choosing their words to avoid offending even the most ultra sensitive ones? The amazing thing about a dancing bear is not how well he waltzes, but the fact that he dances at all. And with 5000 members from many different cultures, countries, and backgrounds, the fact that we can get along at all is astounding to me. Occasional squabbles do not constitute a major problem, IMAO. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-21-01, 10:06 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Who is Robert Murphy?" LAST EDITED ON Dec-21-01 AT 10:10 PM (EST)Hi all. Sorry for the second reply but I was just reading that op-ed message again and I have this to say. He's complaining that we are shooting our mouths off and critisizing work. But if you read his op-ed thingy it cleanly shows that he is critisizing us and our work. Think about it. " I downloaded a locomotive that I didn't like. either it was the quality or the loco itself". Hey buddy, whoever you are you chicken, Say that to the creators face and not " the names were left out to protect the guilty" crap. I say guilty and not innocent because he didn't have one nice thing to say. Say that to our face and see how "friendly" we become. And you know he has alot of balls saying that the Train Artisan stuff is better than the things here. Yeah well if we had 20 people working on one locomotive it would look great to. but I find the things here even better because they were done by one person who loves the hobby and this game and tried his best to get it right. I give that one guy more credit than the guys who made the ESE. they had all there info and we had to search for it and use what we have. Like you guys, Rich, Jim, you guys try your best and hardest to get your great routes to look as close as you can get it to the real thing. Jim I noticed in the 4-4-0 when? post that your having trouble with the 2 bridges having the same texture. and like you said so what if it is the same color as the other one. Get it to the way you like it. its your route not the people who download it. its yours to satisfy you not them. anyway I gotta stop my rant here as I'm getting to hyped up thinging about what I wanna say to this schmuck. Buh Bye for now. Craig Shortino Built a better coupling to my liking not MS's or Murphy's ( though its still in beta ) ( though I'm not going to send him an e-mail cause he's not worth my time. and if this sounds rude to anyone reading this execpt Murphy sorry it isn't meant to. ) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"TrainArtisan.com produces freeware work which is actually higher in quality than the trains that came with the game"
And that is undeniable.>well if we had 20
>people working on one locomotive
>it would look great to. Probably, but just because TA have got a small team together doesn't mean that their stuff is automatically great - I'm sure it still needs their research, talent, artistry, and attention to detail to create stuff like the ESE and F7 (while I'm at it, the SD-70 and the Light Mountain as well )>but I find the things
>here even better because they
>were done by one person Indeed, it is a credit to anyone who makes a loco or freight wagon or passenger car singlehandedly that their work can even begin to be compared to the combined efforts of more people.>who loves the hobby and
>this game and tried his
>best to get it right. Err, not sure if I'm reading this right and/or being paranoid about people knocking my fave train add-ons, but doesn't this imply that TA don't love trains and don't bother trying to get things right? Perhaps your anger at Mr Murphy has caused temporary confusion between TA and Kuju >I give that one guy
>more credit than the guys
>who made the ESE. they
>had all there info and
>we had to search for
>it and use what we
>have. Like you guys, Rich, <cough> Hey Craig, I understand you're (understandably) more than a little peed off right now, but I'm guessing that the TA guys had to do considerable research for their models, just as any other developer has to. All those details don't grow on trees >time. and if this sounds
>rude to anyone reading this
>execpt Murphy sorry it isn't
>meant to. ) Oops. Guess I shouldn't have bothered responding then
But do you really mean to knock TA as much as you seem to have (to me, at least!)?Cheers,
TAfanPS Don't take offence at any of my comments - they are all meant light-heartedly! I wasn't impressed by reading Mr Murphy's verbal diarrhoea either. Robert says and I quote "and I did send a note to the developer offering to send him my fixes. He politely replied he had already discovered the problems and had uploaded a fixed file, but thanked me politely for my offer to help."My reading of this paragraph is that he is demonstrating that a quiet email to the developer pointing out problems and suggested fixes is preferable to open criticism in the fora.
>And
>you know he has alot
>of balls saying that the

Again not correct.Robert says, and again I quote "TrainArtisan.com produces freeware work which is actually higher in quality than the trains that came with the game"....

>Yeah well if we had 20
>people working on one locomotive
>it would look great too.

All too true. How many people, and what sort of resources, do Kuju and Microsoft have to draw on to produce their locomotives and trains? Robert is comparing TA's work to MS/Kuju, not to that of the people here.I agree with Robert - the tenor of a minority of messages on the fora and in a majority of email seems to be turning aggressive and abusive..... I have a site simply to showcase Australian add-ons and have had 10 abusive emails this week, one involving personal threats (he/she's in the Netherlands, so I'm not really worried ) all because there are no new free downloads on the site.RegardsYuri.

>And what is Op-Ed?

According to the image headlining the the paragraph, it's short for Opinion-Editorial.

>I haven't a clue what in the world he's talking about.

Doesn't that mean you're baffled?

>I don't get where you get the idea I was 'baffled' by the message. Now I'm really baffled!

Actually it's Sniper who's baffled (that you don't understand what Rob's saying). Now the obvious come-back is that someone's going to claim that their father invented being baffled.Yuri. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-21-01, 10:42 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Who is Robert Murphy?" Oh I meant by the 'I didn't know what he was talking about' in reference to what seems to be a post about some engine being painted or something or other... "A certain individual was offering constructive criticism of a model regarding some small corrections which would increase the quality and make it easier to re-skin. The painter included screen shots and offered specific suggestion on how he felt the model could be improved. This was after the developer posted that he would like to see his model skinned by this particular artist. The developer, after seeing the screen shots, AGREED with him, and promised to update the model as soon as he had time. To which the painter replied he would be glad to skin the model in several road names"I couldn't find this post is what I meant. It might be in the skinning forum.. I never think to go in there. Maybe that's where this thread is he's talking about, I dunno. But what I can't figure out, is why this issue is being taken up on the front page of Train-sim.com. Seems to me like this is an issue for whatever forum this happen in. I mean.. doesn't it sound localized? I haven't seen much of this king of complaining to warrant a front page news story is where I'm coming from. And I just thought this guy is some kinda editor or something. I heard of the Moffat route being done and all, but I only recall a few posts about it; since then I haven't heard much. I thought the guy gave up.But I'm just curious why this has came up this way. Dec-21-01, 10:54 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Who is Robert Murphy?" LAST EDITED ON Dec-21-01 AT 11:00 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON Dec-21-01 AT 10:55 PM (EST)Ok a little clarrification. as I've said in numorous posts that I'm not the best explainer so sometimes it doesn't come out right. I have nothing against Train Artsian. I love their work as much as the work of various designers, painters, etc. here. And nope I'm not saying that they don't love trains. I'm just saying that its easier for them to get it to exact detail because they have a small group. although in all reality we have a very large group of over 5,000+ simmers here. That is true. I'm sure they did do alot of research for those items. see what I mean by not the best explainer. And that is true also that all the things on all these sites not just TA is much better than the "toy" trains that KUJU gave us. Hi Yuri. if you look at his op-ed thingy you'll see that he said that about a train that wouldn't work. I'm reffering to the one he called " distasteful". though he didn't word it that way that is most likely how he said it. its the one when he said he downloaded it and it didn't match up to his "standards". ok are we all cleared up now? if I forgot to clear something up let me know and I will. ohh and Yuri is your site the one with the 38 Class steam loco's and the skins for the one 38? if so I like your site. when's the steamer that you currently just have a shot of the wheel going to be done? talk to you all soon. Dec-22-01, 00:10 AM (EST) 13. "RE: Who is Robert Murphy?" Nels has had the OP-ED column on the Flight-Sim side of the fence since the time of Christ, but it looks like it's found it's way over here. On the FS side it's usually confined to product reviews ( both commercial and add-ons ), but this does seem to fall on the lecture side instead of an opinion. My parents taught me good manners, so I don't need to hear it from here. I guess the next step will be the "MSTS Police" to inform all naysayers about stepping over the bounds of good taste. Well, unlike Robert Murphy ( who apparantly takes pride in the fact that he hasn't coughed up any $ ), I donated what I could to the Fireman's Widows and Children's Fund when Cyrus Lum asked us to when I d/l'd the ESE, and I'll write another check for the NYCentral Preservation Society for the SD70's and the light Mountain. I bought Jak Fearon's Route Control package which is surely worth twice what he's asking. I gave Chip Buchanan 10 bucks 'cause I like his stuff, and I also have three of Abacus' packages. I say this because I feel that all the contributor's efforts ( both payware and free ) have been the basis for keeping MSTS on my hard drive. All of my uploads have given credit to the original developer(s) and I've tried to help with my posts where I could. I've also seen the dimwitted threads and the reasonable responses to them. We're all here to share the joys and miseries of MSTS and most of us learn as much as we give back, but we all contribute one way or the other. Fortunately, the vast majority here have a positive outlook and appreciate the venue that Nels offers us, because if this place wasn't here most of us would be using the MSTS CD's as beer coasters.

Dec-22-01, 00:54 AM (EST) 14. "RE: Who is Robert Murphy?" Well, I guess that's what I'm talking about with misunderstandings, I read the whole thing and my synopsis of his message is "why can't we all just get along?". I don't know how old he is, but idealism being the last luxury of youth, I suspect he may expect too much. That many people are going to have differences, there are going to be a few jerks out of every 5000 anywhere that find no joy in life without trying to hurt someone else, and there are going to be people who insult without intending to, and others who take insult where none was intended. Altho he did state "I think that the fact these posts aren't deleted and the posters banned speaks volumes for the people at Train-Sim.Com." So he obviously recognizes that diversity requires a certain amount of patience and tolerance, and that Nels does respect freedom of speech. Which to me is far more important, somebody flames me I prefer to flame back rather than having restrictions on what we both are allowed to say. I don't enjoy being deliberately insulted, but it's the lesser of two evils. The individual's right to insult me is far more important than my feelings, because when his rights are infringed, mine are next, and whoever it is that makes the decisions may decide to gag me because my style of expression doesn't suit his personal tastes. I said it before, and I'll say it again, the price of liberty is eternal vigilance, and the price of free speech is putting up with a few jerks once in a while. Thus endeth my sermon.
As far as who he is and why he was on the front page, I suspect that if anyone sends an editorial to Nels and Nels thinks it's good enough he'll post it. After all, it's really his website, so he gets to make the rules. Here's the thread, again, I thought it was a good piece and a good message, unfortunately the bozos who need to take that kind of thing to heart wouldn't be reading it anyway.

Dec-22-01, 10:06 AM (EST) 20. "RE: Who is Robert Murphy?" After having read Robert's take on the thing is there's nothing there that hasn't either been said before, or nor is it happening any differently today than it has been. While I don't disagree with some of the points he makes in his op-ed to make it sound like this is a new trend, that's just utterly nonesense."As I was reading the forums today, sifting through the incredible amounts of useful information, I ran across a series of posts which I feel threaten the very concept of 'Community'."And if you take a different tact, that he's refering to one thread, then again you don't have a prevailing trend. The problem with the post as I see it, is it announces to anyone who bothers to read it, that we're a board of bicker's. While this cannot be denied at times, more useful information abounds than does the bickering."As I was reading the forums today, sifting through the incredible amounts of useful information,.."Even Robert concurs there's much more useful information than the bickering. My point is, this would have been a useful post where chances are it would have been read more. Out on the front page, this advertises what a bunch of ingrates we have amongst us. Frankly, in my opinion, Robert should have addressed those he felt were doing the criticisms rather than labeling the whole lot of us. Though you may not take his article as he saying this about you, this may not be the case if someone new reads his article.I made my decision, I have to respectfully disagree with Nels for giving this front page news regardless. The article is a post that should have remained a post where feedback could have been giving directly aimed at the post. If Robert has a beef with our behavior, let him take it up with us and not take a pot shot at the community as a whole. If somebody like Robert has got something to say about this board, why not say something nice? Wha? Did Robert teach himself all about MSTS without our help? Did he download my tutorials and did they help him? What about yours? I looked into Robert's own posting and while they are pleasant and cordial, most of the time he only addresses his Moffat Tunnel route. That's fine, how'd he do it without us? Why not a commendation for us helping you to get that route nearly complete rather than taking a broadside at our community? I just can't get over, the very first op-ed has to deliver a blow rather than a thank you. Nice. And for Nels, while I am grateful for his pages and all, I don't recall that much bickering of the board being down. There were inquires, that's for certain. But bad-mouthing? Maybe the ex-server, maybe, but I don't recall anyone taking it out on Nels in the forum. In fact I was quite surprised, for as long as it took, there was as much patience as there was.Every day some new poster posts a new question and unlike the old days when I first arrived here, very few questions remain answerless.I just think it was ill-conceived to post a post as an op-ed. Had it been posted as a post, that would have been fine, and fair. And this becomes my official rebuttal. While Robert has merit in some of his points, my take is Robert needs to think seriously about releasing his route if he is not up to taking the criticism that may ensue. I managed to survive the release of my routes, tutorials and add-ons free and pay, just fine. And if you want to know how much negative criticism I have received... 2 emails. On the board, except for a couple of 'I couldn't get it to work so I took it off my hard drive'... ummmm.... maybe three? That's it out of over 600 emails and I don't know how many posts on the board. Rob's taken one thread and blown it out of proportion. Bad things happen on here too Rob. Sometimes, I just happen to be one of them. My apologies to you.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-22-01, 05:06 AM (EST) 15. "RE: Who is Robert Murphy?" I think the Op-Ed raises an important issue. In fact it's one I posted about on the Trainsim UK / CroTrainz forum back in early September in response to the nastiness that ensued when someone wanted to charge a small fee for his MSTS route (not sure what actually happened to it). The sentiments I expressed haven't changed since, so I'll paste what I said then:One of the things that many people simply can't appreciate is the amount of time and effort that goes into developing software and/or add-ons (or indeed, being a webmaster), and dealing with the subsequent demands that come from a growing userbase. Many free software developers start out creating something as a labour of love and, feeling that others may benefit from it, or out of a desire to contribute to a community they're part of, they give it away for free. But as they or their creation becomes more popular and the user demand for more starts banging away at them, their labour of love turns into a chore. In other words, it becomes "work".Within any community, the number of these hardworking contributors is far outweighed by the number of users who aren't contributing anything. Many of these users start making noisy posts in forums or by e-mail, acting as if they're the boss, and you exist to serve them. When you do get praise and thanks, it's often like "thanks, I really appreciate what you're doing, BUT" - it's not unconditional - their mouths are still wide open and you're expected to keep feeding them.It shouldn't be any surprise when the contributors in the community become very bitter at this one-sided relationship and ask for something in return, only to have the userbase suddenly turn on them. All the praise suddenly gets a hollow ring to it. The hundreds of hours you've put into what you've already given them, in return for nothing, don't seem to count for anything. This is an attitude that many developers have to deal with in the free software community in general. Even commercial software developers have to deal with the same sort of attitude from users - what you've sold them is never good enough as is - you're expected to keep on working and giving more.Things aren't so bad here yet, and hopefully us train simmers won't see this 'spoilt brat userbase' that exists in many sections of the free software community. But there are a couple of people planting the seeds, and I think any people exhibiting signs of developing such an attitude should be frowned upon.

Dec-22-01, 06:24 AM (EST) 17. "RE: Who is Robert Murphy?" couldn't agree with both of you more. Some people do get that spoilt brat attitude. no doubt about that but the thing is is that it always ends up hurting the people that do respect it and are thankfull that the person even did it. I mean we don't have to do these things for them. we just do it because we want to make the sim better. I know I haven't contributed anything yet but I'm uploading the UP 1880 coaches for the General today and still working on the coupler problem too. and as soon as I get TSM I'm going to build a 1940's 2-6-6-2 mallet. very similar to the Big Boy ( see pic ) and then I'm hopefully going to convert the Mallet to a big boy. and yes I'm going to upload them not because people have been waiting for them but because I want one and I also want to make TS better so I'm going to upload them. Look for them in about 3 weeks if TSM comes out this week in retail stores. Look for my UP 1880 coaches today. Hey all
I can't agree with the origin of who started the flaming. The flaming started with some guilty conscience because Mr. Murphy hit home....

Dec-22-01, 02:04 PM (EST) 24. "RE: Who is Robert Murphy?" After reading the article, there was one section that stood out and that was about a Microsoft programmer who use to post here and now doesn't. We really do not know the reason why this is the case but Robert did bring up the bad mouthing of Kuju/Microsoft. I am sure a great deal of us including me are happy with MSTS, but when you have certain bugs that stick out like a sore thumb, you start asking questions such as is this going to be fixed in a patch. When you get to certain point in time when you do not hear a thing, than you start wondering if Microsoft/Kuju is acually working on a patch or if they are going to fix it in Version 2. We can easily lash out at this time because first, there is no communication from above and second, certain bugs are a pain. I am still hoping that Microsoft is working on a patch.I know there are people out there working on the front coupling issue and I certainly hope that this problem can be fixed from our end. Couldn'ta said it better, Wiz, I think "quitcherbitchin" is a good summary of what the guy was trying to say. Nice sentiment, Murphy, but request denied. What I meant was "quit yer bitchin" about some supposedly unknown dude telling everyone to "quit yer bitchin". So, Sniper....that being said...."quit yer bitchin" about me saying to "quit yer bitchin" about somebody who says to "quit yer bitchin" when you all we really want is the constitutional right we have as Americans to either "bitch",or to "quit our bitchin", to bitch about people telling us to "quit our bitchin", or to "quit our bitchin altogether" about people "bitchin" or telling us to "quit our bitchin", or people "bitchin" about "other" people that bitch about.........Oh hell with it!!!!LMAOLonghaired"bitchin"wizard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

If this man's words bother some people, maybe those people should take a moment to examine WHY the words trouble them. Perhaps a little too close to an uncomfortable truth? Naah, it's easier to just sling mud at the guy who had the balls to speak up than to admit our failings.Modellers, skinners, route designers, add-on creators, etc.: Keep up the good work. Huh????????? Longhairedwizard OOPS....forget that I had mentioned finishing Evildarkcows C630 (hard to keep track of all these post sometimes). Thats a bummer bout TSM not supporting import of other files, but I intend to use TSM to learn the basics before I tackle 3D-Studiomax (which my girlfriend already has!!!) I,m assuming Studiomax does!liberal (44 posts)
