Dec-18-01, 01:17 PM (EST) "TTX rib side well car" As promised I've made a rib side container car too. I actually reworked my smooth side ("Gunderson type") into a generic rib side ("Thrall type"). The cars will most likely be available for download before Christmas. The texture in the picture is just temporary, I'll change the car number before they're released (can't have a smooth side and a rib side with the same car number, can we?). These cars have 15-20% more polygons than the smooth sides but that's because of the modelled side ribs.Message Areas - "TTX rib side well car" – image 1
Message Areas - "TTX rib side well car" – image 2 As with the smooth side cars I do TTX first since they'd be fine on any road. I don't know if I'll make any other liveries in the rib side but you could always make wishes. Someone claimed that if you look at the numeric value following "normals" in the shape files you can see the actual number of triangles/polygons that a car (or any other shape) has in MSTS. If that is true my container cars have less than half as many polygons as Microsofts stock box car. My rib side well car has 166 (containers included) as compared to 375 for the MS/Kuju box car (US2freight6). And the smooth side has even fewer. Yet my cars are more detailed. Dec-18-01, 03:23 PM (EST) 4. "RE: TTX rib side well car" Mark; Thanks for the nice comment about the IC route. Trouble Pryor is doing scenery in the southern section now which will be in the next release. And while I'm back in Decatur next week for the holidays I'm going to do a lot of rail fanning with MSTS and TSM in mind. New custom stuff will be coming, bridges, signs, buildings etc.David Klemm

"RE: TTX rib side well car" Hey Svante,On my lastest activity (BNSFCoaltrain for the PO&N v4), I have a "Hotshot" Intermodal train that forces your coaltrain into the "hole" and I would love to feature your new intermodal well cars in my activity. Let me know what you think and if so, I'll go into my activity editor and delete those nasty ole' KUJU doublestacksLonghairedwizard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-19-01, 04:39 PM (EST) 11. "RE: TTX rib side well car" I've remodelled the ribside car (moved some points around) to more closely resemble a Thrall type well car. This car will be released in the liveries below, though not all at the same time... Dec-19-01, 05:35 PM (EST) 12. "RE: TTX rib side well car" Looking Sweet as ever!...(wellcars).Svante...I began re-skinning 2 containers already,a "Cho Yang 20',and a "Tiphook" 40' container. However I'm having a big problem making a seperate file for them. When I tried this it caused errors in the other TTX cars.Is it possible to make a seperate file for one well car and 2-3 containers?I haven't excactly figured out which ace files are used for say 1 well car,2- 20',and 1- 45'container.What ace files are needed(names)to make a seperate unit(folder)? The .s,.sd,.wag files I have no problem with,it's everything else.I need your help...Please! Dec-19-01, 05:53 PM (EST) 13. "RE: TTX rib side well car" Have not attempted a re-skin on them yet, my guess is that you'll need to edit the .s file. The .s file contains the references to specific .ace files. Those file names would need to be changed. On the other hand, if you rename the .wag, .s and .sd files and place them in another folder, along with the proper .ace files, that should work too.Ken Martello

Dec-19-01, 06:32 PM (EST) 14. "RE: TTX rib side well car" LAST EDITED ON Dec-19-01 AT 06:37 PM (EST)When repainting you should always put your new file(s) in a new folder with a different name, renaming the .s, .sd and .wag files (as KenM wrote). In the readme-file it says that repaints should not overwrite my original files if you intend to upload the repaints somewhere or make them available for download by others. It's not hard to figure out which textures belong to which cars (though some textures are used for more than one car as you've noticed). The name of the texture files start with the length of the container it belongs to, such as 40, 45 or 48. Next comes the type of container such as "st" for standard, "hc" for high cube and "hcr" for high cube reefer. Textures with "tp" in the name are for the top of a container. So 45hcmaer.ace goes with 45tpmaer.ace, and are for a 45 ft high cube Maersk. I think you'll be able to deduce which textures belong to which containers. If you create a new folder and copy the .s, .sd and .wag files for the car you're repainting (a car or its containers) you can keep the names of the textures if you like and don't have to edit the .s files. Which isn't easy because I've compressed both the ace-files and the .s-files in order to save space.I've tried to make things easier for repainters, so even though the textures for a 48 ft might be identical to the texture for a 53 ft from the same company (but the mapping in the model differs) I've used separate textures so that you can repaint the car with the 48 ft and 53 ft EMP into containers from different companies. Dec-21-01, 01:05 PM (EST) 16. "RE: TTX rib side well car" Went out to your web site and looked at your 'upcoming' releases. All the new lines for the container cars look good. One question though. Several of the screenshots show containers with a '45' on the sides, but they fill the entire 48' well. Were these screenshots just samples to show the rail lines and some of the container combos (without regard to proper size labeling)? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-21-01, 02:45 PM (EST) 17. "RE: TTX rib side well car" They don't fill the entire well. The well is 48 scale foot long. The 45' containers are 45 scale foot long. What you see is a walkway/retainer that moves along the well. I've seen those on some cars and thought they looked cool....They're positioned differently depending on the length of the container in the well, 40', 45' or 48'. Dec-21-01, 03:05 PM (EST) 19. "RE: TTX rib side well car" Thanks for the explination. Guess the moveable sections are there to keep people from getting between the car ends and the containers. Are you considering making any of the Thrall (or Gunderson) articulated container cars? Found a TTX web site that shows their equipment descriptions:http://www.ttx.com/equip/REVCON98.aspThis gives line drawings, dimensions, and weight limits. Dec-21-01, 04:15 PM (EST) 23. "RE: TTX rib side well car" there are a few articulated pieces floating about... someone came up with a talgo trainset which is articulated, and another person was working on articulated sets of french autoracks.i'm sure its not easy, but it's obviously not impossible. if you want, i can hunt down those pieces and try to figure out how they did it... perhaps the same principles can be applied to the well cars.DW Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-21-01, 04:31 PM (EST) 24. "RE: TTX rib side well car" The French autorack used the mid truck as "main", and the cars themselves were trucks. Which meant that he couldn't add any cars to the autorack because MSTS can't handle that many parts on a truck....It's also a big difference between a two car articulated and a five car articulated. There are a number of articulated trains out there, but it's still not the same as articulated intermodal cars because with the latter you expect to be able to hook some 20 of those sets up together to form a train. You don't do that with an articulated commuter train. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-21-01, 04:52 PM (EST) 25. "RE: TTX rib side well car" i see what you are saying... i suppose they did it the same way for the talgo trainset as well (talgo is 12 cars long or something like that). the only thing that got me curious, is that whoever recently did the cascades version of the talgo was able to hook engines on both ends, as they do in real life. i haven't tried it, but theoretically you should be able to add more cars on as well, given that you can stick an engine on the end. just food for thought.
