Dec-16-01, 02:16 AM (EST) "Route Control is available now." We are very proud to announce the release our latest addition to Train Simulator, Route Control.Route Control saves massive amounts of hard drive space, makes installing routes easy, and stops crashes. The unregistered version, available for download at our site, contains the fully working "Checkup" feature, free for your unlimited use.Route Control Checkup seeks out troublesome activities and consist files and takes care of problems before they crash the sim. It then gives you a fully detailed report featuring a list of which trains you'll want to install to get things working again, as well as a list of activities to avoid until the trains are available.Get more information and download Route Control Lite absolutely free right here: http://www.howintheworld.com/routecontrol.shtmlThanks, and enjoy!

Dec-16-01, 06:10 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Route Control is available now." First impressions. So far I packed 2 routes, Valley Line & Rocky Islands. Neither occupied over 500 meg so there for I could not save over 500 meg by deleting them after packing. This is a little misleading I guess, cause it tells you, you can save over 500 meg each time you pack a route, not if it ain't that big in the first place. Now to get a route to drive, you load route control, select the route, and load it into MSTS. This takes several minutes to copy all the files over to a Virtual Route Folder. Then you fire up MSTS and pick the route you just loaded. Now guess what? It has to regenerate the buffer files. We all know how long that takes according to how big the route is. Bummer. Lots of waiting. So now you want to play another route. Exit MSTS, fire up Route Control, load the other route, wait for files to copy, load MSTS, generate buffer files...Yes only one route is available at a time. You have to preload the route with route control before you get into MSTS. This is saving alot of space, but killing my time. It does not take up as much time as installing a route, and then running stuffit3 or another utility, but it does take considerable time away from my playing.I assume haveing more than one virtual folder would negate the purpose of route control in the first place. So so far, it saves a lot of space, but wastes a bit of time. Now the check up feature is pretty awesome. When I packed Valley Line it copied consist files to the consist folder that contained trains I have not installed. Of course MSTS crashed on not finding them. I ran the check up feature and it moved the bad consist files out of the way so MSTS could fire up. Plus it gives you a list of all the problem files with the errors noted so you can fix them, by installing the appropriate engines or wagons. It also claims it will move the bad consist files back when you do install the appropriate engine files. I have not checked this feature yet.I have one concern that I could not find mentioned anywhere. I also went to How In the World's site to look for the support forum, but one is not set up yet for Route Control. When I make new activities what will happen to them when I load another route in? I am asking this question and have not tried to do this yet, but I am going to try it shortly, hopefully ROute Control is smart enough to know I made a new activity. For $14.95 you can't go wrong it you like to have a lot of routes installed. I have most of them. Packing Valley Line and Rocky Islands saved over 450 meg. If there is no problem with new activities, I will be packing them all. I also have a new route to install, so I will be checking out the install feature real soon too.Bob Artim Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-16-01, 06:54 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Route Control is available now." Bob,Thanks very much for posting this. And thanks to everyone else who has posted in this thread as well. This is the first moment I've got to check the forum since I posted the announcement. I'd like to address just a few of the things you brought up, just for clarification purposes.First impressions. If you're speaking of the notice shown when you remove a route after packing, we specifically made sure the notice said "you'll save about 500MB". The reason of course is that some routes will indeed take up less space, but the least amount we've seen them take up is 400MB, which is noted on the Route Control page at our web site. Bummer. Lots of waiting.Although each route will have to generate buffer files the first time you load it (which is standard for most routes installed via the batch file method as well), the next time you load the route from Route Control the buffer files will not have to be regenerated. They are compressed and stored in a special folder, and put back in when you load the route. You also mentioned the time it took to load the routes themselves. Some routes of course will take a bit longer due to their size, but the average we've seen is less than 30 seconds. These two particular routes are the ones you mention here so I've gone ahead and timed them. On one of our test systems, an AMD 700, Rocky Islands takes approximately 3 seconds to load into Train Simulator from Route Control. I've just now timed the Valley Line route and it took 25 seconds. Now, packing a route is not the quickest way to add routes into Route Control. The best way to add routes is to simply drop the original zip files into the downloaded routes folder and click the Add Routes button. Doing this on our test system just now for the two routes mentioned above took 5 seconds. On the other hand, packing them from the already installed routes will take siginificantly longer. It's recommended that the Pack option is only used when you no longer have the original zips for the route, or when special circumstances arise, as mentioned in the help file. I have one concern that I could not find mentioned anywhere. When Route Control loads a new route, it looks to see if any activities were altered or added to the previously loaded route. If it finds any, it saves them and loads them back the next time the route is loaded.Again, I thank you very much for your appraisal. If there is anything we strive for at how in the world? it is to retain our reputation with the community, and we certainly take everything that's said about our products at the highest level of importance. And by the way, I'm setting up the support forum as we speak. Dec-17-01, 00:31 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Route Control is available now." Downloaded the Lite pack did a checkup this thing gave me a list of problems a mile long. I tried the activities that it told me were going to crash Train Sim but they worked fine. What is the use of this if the information is wrong? Maybe you need to tone this down a bit, must be way too picky as to what it considers is wrong? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-17-01, 00:59 AM (EST) 12. "RE: Route Control is available now." LAST EDITED ON Dec-17-01 AT 01:02 AM (EST)RogAnn,Unless you complete the entire activity there is no way of knowing if it will crash Train Sim or not. Route Control checks everything and although there may not appear to be anything wrong 2 minutes into an activity, if a train is scheduled to appear 25 minutes in and you don't have it, Train Sim will crash. With that said, could you email me the Analysis Report that was generated? I'd like to take a look at it just to be sure. Thanks,

Dec-17-01, 09:46 AM (EST) 15. "RE: Route Control is available now." GET IT GET IT GET IT GET IT This is the BEST program for MSTS since MSTS! To cut right to the chase...it does what it says it will do. Software like that is few and far between.MORE IMPORTANT (IMHO) than the software itself is the level of commitment by Jak and his team to tech support and customer service. Trust me when I say it is second to none as I found out yesterday. Jak stayed with me for several hours (via email) while we worked through a problem I had encountered. He wouldn't and didn't stop until the program was up and running perfectly. Can you imagine if we got service and support like that from everyone??? Nope, I can't either LOL! Anyway, GET IT NOW...this is one program that will not cause "buyers remorse" Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-17-01, 01:34 PM (EST) 18. "RE: Route Control is available now." Hi,With all the cheers, I hardly dare..That free checkit program has some quircks.I have several trainset folders like this:
-eanos
MSTS has no trouble with it, but Check-it doesn't eat it, all consist that point to folders with a name starting with are reported as bad.
SW is Svante Wendel, the great artist.Several consists are reported as bad, but MSTS runs fine with these consists. And three consists are reported as missing, but check-it has moved them to his own backup folder. Yes then they are missing.Well it cost me more than an hour to conclude that there was nothing wrong except two consists and not all the ones Check-it reported.Dick van den Hoven Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-17-01, 03:14 PM (EST) 19. "RE: Route Control is available now." Dick,Although Route Control was in testing for four months, and we and the entire test team ran every single consist and train we could get our hands on through it, it is inevitable in this business that there are always things that get missed. Out of the hundreds who've downloaded, we've only heard from about 5 people who've gotten faulty consist\train reports, and we are working hard at this very moment putting together an update that will address the issues. Most of the problems have stemmed from consists created by third party consist editors that don't create things in quite the same format that the official Microsoft consist editor does. Other issues are due to train naming schemes that we didn't encounter during testing. At any rate, we'll be releasing the update as soon as humanly possible. I've been waiting a bit to see if any other problems come up so I can address them as well but so far there have been incredibly few. We're on the case. Jak Fearon
