Jun-11-01, 08:17 PM (EST) "What is wrong with my computer IT IS WORKING why arent all of yours?" It seems like I am the only person with out preformence problems and my computer is not super fast it is only a Athalon 1.2, 32mb TNT2, 128mb system RAM, 200mhz system bus, and other stuff that is not top of the line but MSTS works 99.97% perfect. Maybe it is because I have never messed with any settings deep with in the BIOS or anything that I didnt know what it did. We applaude you keeping your system so well fit. But don't imply that you are the only one that does that, therefore the only one not having troubles. It is true a lot of people do whack their systems. But someday when you really understand computers, you will realize that bugs do exist in software, there are all sorts of compatibility issues with the many types of hardware/software combinations, and even brand new PC's will give problems. So don't sit there blowing your horn and pointing fingers at people for having problems you may someday encounter too. Your post borders on what I would call taunting, and served no real purpose. Let's try to help people with their issues. Your point is good about personalizing too many settings, but I question if that is the cause of a lot of the problems. P.S. one reason I dont mess with too many setting is because I talked my parents into buying my computer for me and I half to pay them back and I dont want to kill it and be paying off for a dead computer. Hey guys, this is ONLY version 1.0 of this sim. Being an IT person for 12 years, I NEVER seen or used a bug free version 1.0 of anything. Just report anything (bug) you see to the the message thread created in this forum.This is a great sim. Someday I'd like to see the rest of the NE Corridor run to Boston. Also the freight traffic lines in northern NJ.Here's the hardware I'm using MSTS on...Dell Dimension 4100 series

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card.MSTS runs FULL screen on the 19" monitor. And I have all options set or to the MAX. No problems with sound or pausing. Even with rain or snow turned on.Before installing MSTS, I did what I always do before install software. I ran SCANDISK and DEFRAG. Did this in SAFE MODE (so not all system "stuff" gets loaded). Hey BNSF,By today's standard (last I read today's standard was 800 megahertz, 128 megs of ram, and an 8 meg vid card, please correct me if I'm wrong,) and what most people have in thier house, you have a superfast computer. I have a P!!! 600, Geforce 256 32 mb, soumdblaster live! value,and 384 megs of ram. The only problem I have are the framerates will dip for a split second, the stutter effect, if you will. But then again I've read on this forum that people with basically the same specs as me are having some major problems. So it all has to do with hardware compatability, or a software bug. Mine's set to 800*600 with all the graphics and sound turned on. I have what I consider a dog of a computer. 450 celeron 128mb ram and a 10gb hardrive. TNT2ultra video and a diamond s90 sound card. My computer is a PIII-600 w/ 256MB Ram, 100Mhz bus, Riva TNT2 w/32MB onboard RAM, Soundblaster Live 128. Only the memory has been doubled to 256MB. It so far has run any game with the only problems been the installation from my 48x DVD/CD-ROM drive. I have had no problems installing or running anything from my 32x Read CD-RW drive. I'm told that the TNT2 vid card and Soundblaster sound card work best together and run any game without a problem. I'm getting 15-40 fps. No crashes, freezes, etc... Its quite simply that, normally, people who aren't having a problem won't be posting in the forums about it, they'll probably be playing MSTS instead.
It'll only be the people that are having bugs that are posting because they want to fix them. If you consider the percentage of people who are having bugs out of the total percentage that have bought trainism, you'll probably find that it is comparitively small. And guess what - I changed my BIOS default settings to take advantage of every ounce of performance i could squeeze from this sucker (i do not overclock however). And guess what else - the sim runs fine! Soooo.....All i am saying is don't blame everything on people who tweak their BIOS and other system settings - there are those of us who know what we're doing. I mean, there's millions of possible combinations of PC parts out there that comprise individual PCs that we own. So it's impossible for software makers to make sure their product works perfectly on every single PCs out there. Obviously MS Train Sim runs well enough during testing (on certain combination of PC parts that they have access to) that they feel confident about releasing it.My computer runs just about every games and softwares that I bought (and I do buy a lot of them!) straight out of the box. No tinkering needed. Usually I'm the one who have the same thought as BNSF did, when I visit a message board, and it's filled with people reporting problems when the game runs perfectly right out of the box in my system. But occasionally there's one that didn't, like MS Train Sim. BTW it runs OK now with some tinkering (and a change of hardware). And since my system is a Celeron 566 overclocked to 850mhz, it's safe to say that I has had to mess with the BIOS settings a bit! So BNSF, you're lucky that MS Train Sim works perfectly in your system, but if you keep buying softwares, sooner or later you'll encounter one that won't work right straight out of the box on your system. It's inevitable! As for tinkering, most ready-made computers are usually not perfectly configured straight out of the box, and will perform a lot better with some tinkering. First, you need to know what type of BIOS you have. Is it Award or AMI? Then it is a good idea to know which chipset you have. Is it VIA's, ALi's, AMD's? Then you should know how fast you RAM is. CAS latency? Basically what i am trying to say is that there is a lot to know about a machine before you can safely adjust BIOS setings. However, before going into BIOS, i think we need to do a little more troubleshooting needs to be done. Is this the ONLY program your machine locks up on? And do you know what kind of sound card you have and which version of DirectX is installed? Unless somebody figures out how to do an install and not have it install 8. Can that be done? And how would trainsim work with say DirectX 7.0a Any ideas? Just curious - many flightsimmers have been advising not to upgrade too quickly to DirectX 8 due to known problems with some joysticks, and flightsims.
