Nov-06-01, 00:13 AM (EST) 1. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" The tunnel looks a little too small. I'll scale it up a bit if you think it needs it.

Nov-06-01, 11:24 AM (EST) 6. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" Oh my! I think we're going to need some more D&RGW stuff! That looks like a sure winner from where I sit. The wife and I rode the CZ from Salt Lake City to Denver some time ago, but we haven't had the chance to go back for the return trip. Now it looks like I'll be able to take it from my desktop.Keep up the good work!Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-06-01, 03:31 PM (EST) 7. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" That portal looks real nice but probably too small as was mentioned. Here's a pic of the east portal that shows the scale of it:Message Areas - "The Moffat Tunnel" – image 9And here's a decent pic of the west portal that could be used for a texture if the pole was retouched.Message Areas - "The Moffat Tunnel" – image 10Cliff Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-07-01, 12:06 PM (EST) 8. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" That picture of UP coming throught the Moffet Tunnel is Sacralidge. Need to find a good picture of Rio Grande Pa's with the CZ coming throught the tunnel. I have a lot of pictures of that route, but no scanner. I'll see what I acn turn up.Union Pacific, better railroading through intimidation. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-07-01, 04:41 PM (EST) 9. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" I actually agree with you, which is why, you may have noticed, all the screenshots are of Rio Grande locos, and the Route will be RG. BUT, if you're a UP fan, more power to you, as a result of the merger, BNSF now has trackage rights and runs coal trains through the tunnel with Dash-9's Six of them.Rob Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-07-01, 07:58 PM (EST) 10. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" LAST EDITED ON Nov-07-01 AT 07:58 PM (EST)Is the tunnel being modelled in it's full length of 6.2 miles?I'm curious because, as much as I love this route, (is it the one in TrainMaster 4?) I would be bored stiff sitting inside the tunnel for the length of time it'd take to travel the distance! Will you be offering a reduced-length version? Bruce. Nov-07-01, 09:20 PM (EST) 11. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" Actually, I don't know anything about TrainMaster 4, might be interesting to see it, though, Yes, it is full length, Took a long time to put all those tunnel sections in, that far underground, and have it come out in the right place at the right height. It does get boring, I suggest using the Empire State Express, so you can go back to the Observation car during the trip. Oh, and you kind of have to watch out because the Tunnel is uphill from both ends, cresting about 1/3 of the way from the East Portal. Drainage and all that. Seriously though, at 40mph, it's about a ten minute trip through, but you can always use the other parts of the route.Rob Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-07-01, 10:07 PM (EST) 13. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" LAST EDITED ON Nov-07-01 AT 10:10 PM (EST)Could be JC, they probably worked from Denver westward and ran out by the time they hit the west end. Seriously though, that East portal contains ventilating equipment that pulls the smoke out of the tunnel after a train passes through. There is an overhead door that is lowered within the portal to close the portal so that the fans pull the clean air in from the west end. I assume the large size of the portal is to house all the ventilation equipment.Cliff Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-07-01, 10:37 PM (EST) 14. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" Being a HUGE fan of the D&RGW I have been reskinning like mad. Since the GP60 came out I have made some VERY early attempts at reskinning one (pic below). I also will try to make some GP40's in the big and small Rio Grande lettering. I also am going to make some different road numbers for the SD45 and SD50 I reskinned. I also have a coal car I will upload soon. Lots of Rio Grande will be appearing in the download section soon!!

Nov-08-01, 01:03 AM (EST) 15. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" Glad to see someone reskinning things in Grande Gold and Silver, I would really appreciate The PA's in four stripe. Its sad I used to be a skinner, now the license to paint shop pro 7 has expired and I as a poor college student can't afford to buy, even if I could I'm going to the great Mid-America train show sunday in Chicago, so any money I have will go there. Nov-08-01, 10:50 AM (EST) 16. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" That's absolutely correct, the interesting thing is the East Portal is actually 300 feet from the Mountain! There's a snowshed connecting it to the actual Tunnel, which is sort of why the Portal looks like it's standing out there by itself...The Portal may look a little short on the inside...Well, it is, No Double-Stacks allowed on this route. Hi-Cubes have about 6 inches clearance through the tunnel, and mostly go over Wyoming. The Portals are concrete, coated with Granite to protect them from the vicous Colorado Winters, High Winds and Blizzards are constant problems in the Winter. I have pictures of the Tunnel during Blizzards with 50 foot visibility. I highly recommend Sky Conductor 2 for use with this route, I will be contacting him for permission to ship this route Sky Conductor enabled from the git-go. I will not include anything without permission from the authors, and without giving them full credit, so if anyone would like to contribute, let me know. This is going to be a full-blown, as accurate as POSSIBLE route, and I am going to try to match or exceed the quality of the default routes. I myself have 28.8k dial-up since I can't get BroadBand where I live, so I have to upload it with that, so if I can upload it, anyone should be able to download it.Mike Rector is finished with the West Portal, and I have it, after he sees the screenshots, I'll go ahead and post them here. Look for a release of the "barebones" version in about two weeks or less, the fully scenicked version will be a little longer, but, it's FREE!By the Way, thanks to Nick for the re-skinning efforts, and all of the other people who have created locos and cars.

Nov-21-01, 10:02 PM (EST) 18. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" As a matter of fact, yes, I do have the wye, it was used in steam days for turning locomotives after helping trains to the Tunnel. They would stay and help push to the Apex of the Tunnel because of the steep grade on the East side, then drop off on the fly, return to the wye and turn for the trip back down the mountain. Steam Locos really didn't run well tender first, especially on the Denver and Salt Lake, which made money by deferring maintenance. When the Rio Grande bought the Moffat Road, there were tunnels which hadn't had any maintenance since they had been built 50 years earlier!RobDon't know about the little church thing, got any pics? Nov-22-01, 02:04 AM (EST) 20. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" Did they really run steam thru the tunnel?
I thought most railroads preferred electrifying extremely long tunnels in order to avoid problems with all the smoke Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-22-01, 02:20 AM (EST) 21. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" Yeah they did, well others would know this better then I of course, but I've been told about why they used cab forword steam locomotives through that very tunnel! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-22-01, 10:34 PM (EST) 22. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" Lemme see if I can remember what I read sometime ago...Yes, they used steamers. There were problems from the start though. Even though the tunnel had several vents for the smoke; it never worked like it should. There's even a case or two of engineers nearly suffocating on the floors of their locomotives while gasping for air.The cab forward was an attempt to deal with this problem, and the problem of visiblilty in the snow sheds. The idea was simple; put the engineer ahead of the smoke and he should fare rather well. (didn't work as planned though...some trains had trouble) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Nov-22-01, 11:29 PM (EST) 23. "RE: The Moffat Tunnel" To the best of my knowledge the Denver & Salt Lake and the Denver & Rio Grande never used cab forwards; they were only found on the SP. Since the Rio Grande absorbed the D&DL they ventilated the tunnel using monster fans on the east end, and an overhead door at the east portal that was closed while a train was passing through the tunnel so the fans could pull air from the open west portal. It still got pretty smokey, although never fatal, as it did on occasion in the Alpine Tunnel on the narrow gauge DSP&P. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
