Apr-25-01, 08:44 AM (EST) "Trainsim Revealed - Fanstock 2001 live report!" Hi. After a great evening with the designers of MS FS2002 and Trainsim, we got lots of great information that we can share with you on the upcoming Trainsim.1) You really will be learning how to operate a real locomotive, whether it be steam or modern engined. All the non-steamers are fully replicated with every function that a real engineer would need. The procedures that are documented come right from the real train operator's manuals. The steam engine will be fully functional with the exception to the fireman. A real fireman has to do much much more than they can simulate..and requires a lot of experience and it's like an art. Here the "computer" will help you out there keeping the right balance. But everything else is up to you.2) you can control the weather, before each session, but not during3) there are other AI trains to watch out for, and accidents can happen with them (collisions)4) you can have derailments, based on real physics and your operating conditions, speed, track, weather, weight, etc. etc.5) You can't hit animals, or vehicles at crossing grades - they are not suicidal and obey laws (I know, I know....) NO animals were harmed in the making of Trainsim... they told me 6) Many viewpoints will work you into the entire theme and feeling of being there. Why, there is even piano music in the parlor car!7) There is a murder mystery onboard, one of the adventures! So, that is what I remember now, more to come later!Peter James

Apr-25-01, 09:20 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Trainsim Revealed - Fanstock 2001 live report!" True story and best part, no one was harmed or charged.
Bringing a freight train through a suburb west of Pittsburgh, I looked ahead to a road crossing and saw a late model BMW sports car racing me to the crossing. When I saw he wasn't slowing, I payed particular attention to his progress around the crossing gates to see if I needed to dump the air or not. he made it around the first gate ok, but swerving to get around the gate on the far side of the crossing he raked the side of his car and dug a nice deep gouge into the paint. As soon as he cleared the tracks, he slammed on the brakes and got out of his car to survey the damage. There was a nice white scrach about 3 inches thick from his driver side door to above the rear wheel. He was furious. I was laughing hysterically and still blowing the horn per FRA rules as I passed. He had the nerve to think it was somehow the railroad's fault and flipped me the bird. (keeping up relations) He forgot how close he was to a running dash 9 with a horn loud enough to be heard 5 miles away. I blew the horn through the crossing as required, and he all but fell to the ground in agony. I usually don't take pleasure in making people's ears bleed, but in this case, it made my day. I've been on the wrong end of a modern locomotive horn echoing off city buildings at close range. it's not pleasant. I describe the experience that happened to me as "pissing my pants and forgetting my name". it really can be that disorientating if you're too close.
So anyway, this guy still probably didnt' learn his lesson, because he's too important to stop for a train and he probably tried to get the railroad to pay for his paint job. Looooooser.Master Qui-Gon Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-28-01, 04:02 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Trainsim Revealed - Fanstock 2001 live report!" My mistake actually, it wasn't an exact quote, but in Christmas Vacation, Eddie (Clark's cousin I think?) talks about when he had a metal plate in his head, and how everytime his wife fired up the microwave he would "Piss my pants and forget who i am for a half-hour"Dave Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-01-01, 01:12 AM (EST) 11. "RE: Trainsim Revealed - Fanstock 2001 live report!" Ah, then perhaps it was a subconscious inspiration for my expression. I like a lot of the Vacation film's lines. Especially Clark's subtle mistakes. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-26-01, 06:50 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Trainsim Revealed - Fanstock 2001 live report!" Thanks Peter,I liked the bit about the fully functional Steam engine, I can hopefully now go back to Steam train driving again.
But I'll miss my fireman, hope my computer fireman does not give me a hard time like some back in those days.
Peter you stated, "Fireman requires a lot of experience and it's like an art".
You never said a truer word, it was truly an ART..
A fireman can make an a good Engineman's day very miserable, but also an engineman can make a good Fireman's day terrible also. Those days you were not 2 persons in an engine, you had to be mates and worked as a team, or the trip was .................................... terrible. With Diesels as long as your offsider was not on the chilli peppers before the shift, there is not much of a problem in that area.Glad to see no bingles on Railway Crossings in MSTS, at least that will keep my heart rate down in my twilight years, had enough of that during my long Railway career. BUT I do wonder just HOW long it will take for some designer to satisfy that violent desire that is in human nature to create some nasty crossing bingles. Hmmmmmm...... One good thing it will only be an Add-on and I do not have to install it.BUT on a positive side of that sort of Add-on scenario, is it would at least TEST you out to see how you would really react to such a situation. Here I mean treated as a REAL train crossing scenario,,,,,, and NOT a just watch "ME" get this one. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
