Sep-23-01, 06:13 PM (EST) "JUST BASIC FRAME RATES" G’day all,
Here is a bit of fun......
On this forum we often see, I get 20fps, or, I get 60fps, or I get........... 500fps. First of all I ONLY use the Marias Pass track (not interested in the rest, well for now anyway)
I'm a retired Railwayman (not from the U.S.) and my Railway career was all “hands on” railway work (not an office job either) The Marias Pass track gives me a track I can sort of relate to from my old(er) days. I like getting back to driving the old steamers and this track does it nicely for now, despite a couple of bugs which I work around now.Anyway got to thinking about these frame rates in MSTS. I did this setup exercise amongst some fellow simmers with MS Flight Sim over different versions. It was an interesting exercise. Where does everyone take those frame rate readings from?
Of course from wherever they get the best reading.
So I thought I would run this by you as a sort of test.
What I’ve done here is shown you my system setup (nothing fantastic) that would refer only to just basic frame rates using a DEFAULT setting in MSTS and using a default (MSTS) stationary train.
Something like for those FltSimmers of using Default Meigs sitting on runway and taking a Frame rate setting, stationary, side views etc.. and just comparing.My MSTS is set to this. DISPLAY.

This is just out of plain interest, nothing more. No correspondence entered into.
I found doing this with other fellow MS Flightsimmers on each version of FS, there was a thread as to what CPU and cards showed was a rough expected frame rate, that was rather interesting.
Well to me anyway, maybe to you as well. John. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

other stuff: nothing that will matter to game performance i get 17-18fps at 1024x768 while stationary at the place you said (whitefish i beleive). while moving it's still the same. different consists: no change, except when looking at the whole train. once out of whitefish, it's around 30. pass the mountains, towards shelby i keep a firm 67-72 (you gotta love those plains). i mostly use the NEC, and i get above 25 most of the time, slowing to around 18 at phil, wash and willmington.

>I guess we'll all know in a year or so Well, to answer my own question a faster cpu does make a difference indeed. Memory bandwidth could also be an issue, but anyway, I just put together my new system:Abit TH7-II Raid, P4 1.7Ghz @ 1.955 Ghz so far

Sep-30-01, 08:57 PM (EST) 36. "RE: JUST BASIC FRAME RATES" G’day Lars,Thanks for posting your new readings. Excellent.
You say your happy, so would I with those readings, but for the er added cost to do it.
Nice to see what possible future readings hold when I/We upgrade down the road later on.
First time I’ve seen readings with a high end CPU, very interesting to me.Yes a reasonable jump up the scale with a CPU and certainly does make a difference. More so than the Video card. But points to what I mentioned in another post before, that to see top results you MUST double your CPU size each time you upgrade. When I upgraded my Celeron 300mz to a PIII-850 and in the Default FS2000 setup I used, the results were very good. A little later on, I then upgraded my Viper 550 (TNT1) to the Geforce2 GTS to match my PIII-850 cpu and the frame jump was better but nothing anywhere like the jump with the CPU. BUT the Geforce2 GTS card made Flight Sim come alive in the graphics area. (Train Sim was just in the making back then)So the higher CPU coupled to a matched Video card, the results were like you, I was happy and still am CONSIDERING what I’m running. My next upgrade when the P4-2gig comes down in price to what we (peasants) can afford. Maybe in 12 to 18 months time. Well now you have finally matched your Geforce3 card with a higher end P4 CPU. Results quite good I would say. Before your GeForce3 card was far better than your 1gig CPU. The 1 gig CPU was letting it down in a way. That saying about Video cards is:- Match the Video card to the CPU, and I would say you have done that now. The fruit will come later on. Lars, though will not concern you, see my post on the GeForce2 further down this thread.John.

Oct-01-01, 02:39 AM (EST) 40. "RE: JUST BASIC FRAME RATES" Hi JohnI was actually surprised to se how much better Trainsim actually ran with the faster cpu. I was indeed hoping for better performance, but I can safely say that I got even more than I hoped for. Travelling with the Acera Express, high speed driving is now much more realistic, i.e you get a better sense of the speed because of the substantially higher framerates. Most of the NEC is running at 50+ fps in view 1 or shift+1 (my 2 preferred views) and framerates are hardly ever below 40! Now it would be great to see the scores of a 1.5+ Ghz Athlon with a GF3 and also the possible difference between a sdr and a ddr system. I belive the cpu/fpu to be the single most important factor, but I'm sure memory bandwidth is also an issue somewhere in the equation.Also John, thank you for responding in the same "spirit" as my post was intended, namely solely for information. Having been a computer enthusiast for years I frequently upgrade (too frequently if you ask my wife) and I always enjoy information on how different systems perform in different games. I'm especially impressed by the scores of the dual Athlon MP system in this thread. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Is it possible for you to set your options\DISPLAY and ADVANCE DISPLAY to the exact settings I have mentioned in my original and number 8 post.
I would be very interested to see how your PIII – 550 performed exactly.
Most so far are the much higher end PC’s.
Would like to see some lower end PC's as well.The Mid and Lower end PC’s running TS, are interesting as well, as in (Steam4me)Yuri’s post No 4.
Thanks for that Yuri.John.

I still have a 14" monitor though ;(I heard someone saying that Graphics card power isn't that important, well I can tell him that it is THE most important thing out of a combination of other factors. GeForces are so much faster then other graphics cards mostly because of the T&L engine(Transform & Lighting) which makes the games lightening fast and really smooth.I also found in MSTS that it uses a lot of memory and when I start Winamp to have some music while I'm ridin' those rails, the performance falls quite a bit, but that may be so because MSTS doesn't support multiple processors, and neither does Winamp.Grtx and Train On,Bas Penris Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-27-01, 02:01 AM (EST) 17. "RE: JUST BASIC FRAME RATES" G’day Rob20,> Just want to know what i should buy in the future Thanks for participating in this exercise.
Just keep watching the results of each persons MSTS default readings here and in time you will get a ROUGH idea of what CPU and CARD to get, or may put you in the right direction also.Personally I would leave the GeForce3 alone, (too expensive at present) unless you are prepared to fork out for a very high end P4, (again expensive) and that would only be more for future, than for right now. To do it cheap (well much cheaper) the 1gig PIII’s with a 32 or 64meg GeForce2 GTS/Pro do quite well for now. Only get a 64meg card IF you plan to use screen resolutions over the 1024 x 768, or plan to upgrade your PC parts in near future. This setup would give you the best bang for your buck. The saved cash can then be for your next upgrade in 12 to 18months time. Don’t buy too far ahead, especially IF your on a limited budget like most of us are, as technology and prices change daily. We think we’re doing a great stick, only to find out later you have blown heaps of moola and with quite disappointed results. In other words not good value for your money.Remember whatever CPU you get, to upgrade next time to get good results you must DOUBLE the size of your CPU. So if you get a 1gig now, then later on the next upgrade is a P4 2gig to get markedly good results. So if you get say for example a P4 1.4gig now, then your next upgrade would be a P4 2.8gig. So carefully weigh your cash funds BEFORE you blow it for very little results. Here I ONLY say Pentium, only because I use Intel chips. Same would go for AMD.I had a 300mhz Celeron with a Viper 550 (TNT1) and I was fortunate to be able to upgrade my old AT-Baby Motherboard to a PIII-850mhz (100mhz) and a AGP Geforce2 GTS/Pro card. I’m more than happy with the results in MSTS. This will do me for another 12 months or more hopefully, and did not cost an arm and a leg to do this either.John

All these measurements are not worth a penny. Even with super system, the choppy frame rate still exists.
So what if I obtain 50 FPS and then the framerate droppping to 18, even for a short moment, but total experience is not smooth like in BVE. I don't like it. Hopefully Trainz will be better.AdamAMD Athlon 1.4 GHz on Asus A7M266 with 512 DDR SDRAM

I run Win98 and I installed these latest Nvidia Drivers : Detonator XP v21.81 Windows 95/98/Me over the previous Nvdia Detonator version.I have a PIII-850 and 64meg GeForce2 GTS/Pro and I found NO difference in Frame rates at all.
However, maybe my imagination but the Sim does seems to be just ever so slightly smoother for some reason.
Maybe only noticable with my slower PIII-850, with your 1gig cpu probably may not be noticable.
If you do upgrade to lastest drivers and your fames are different, be interesting to know on this thread.John.

>John.Hi John / jm1941,
Running Win98SE,
Re: New video drivers.
Check this out:
I just downloaded/installed Nvidia Detonator 21.81 drivers from Nvidia's website.
With the new Nvidia generic 21.81 drivers, I LOST one to three frames per second, on EACH of the Keys!!!
Needless to say, I reinstalled the Jaton (my video card mfr) drivers that match the Jaton 3DForceMX GeForce2/64 Meg card I requested with my machine (Jaton's a small mfr with a good reputation, & priced for my budget).
Surprise!
I'm back to the frame rates as stated in my original post.
Interesting, eh? Just another reason to perhaps avoid 'generic' drivers and go with those supplied by the video card mfr. I've had NO stability problems.
Perhaps I'll check Jaton's website for updated drivers...
Then again, perhaps I'll just ignore their website and continue to learn how to drive these trains SmOOOOOOthly!
Best,
John / jfroth1

Sep-29-01, 00:10 AM (EST) 26. "RE: JUST BASIC FRAME RATES" G'day jfroth1 Thanks for your updated information, and very interesting too, although a bit of a nuisance for you having to re-install back to original drivers. I’ve read a few times where this does happen, but I’ve also seen where it works in reverse and a few extra frame rates are gained. I guess it’s a bit of trial and error, as most systems all have slight differences to some drivers. I use to have a Diamond Viper 550 (TNT1) and when I updated that card with the later Nvidia detonator drivers at the time, I got an extra 6fps and for FlightSim 2000 back then that was just fantastic. It meant going from a slight jerking to nearly smoother take-off. Back then I only had a Celeron 300mhz coupled to the Diamond Viper 550 and it did rather well, even looking back now. But did not have MSTS back then.I upgraded the 300 Celeron cpu to a PIII-850 (100mz) and put in a Geforce2 GTS/Pro video card and results were much better. The frames were about what I reckoned they would be using this Default frame rate exercise from others. So I knew roughly what I could expect with each small bit of upgrade I have made and have not been disappointed either. Two weeks ago upgraded the GeForce2 GTS/Pro drivers with these latest Nvidia 21.81 drivers, but there was NO difference in actual frame rates at all. BUT as I said the Train Sim itself does seem a fraction smoother. I think if your using the low end Nvidia chipsets, then these latest Nvidia drivers do give a few extra frames, but the higher end Nvidia chipsets e.g. GeForce2 GTS results are very minimal, but there are OTHER areas of the video that these new drivers may do bit better to the Sim that have no actual effect on the frame rate itself. Maybe why my sim SEEMS just a wee fraction smoother with no extra frames. This is where having a default setup frame rate reading, as it will show you if there is any real improvement. I have used this over the years with Flight Sim and has been very helpful for me. The only games I have installed, are Flight Sim and Train Sim, so cannot speak for other games.John

That's because they're just reference drivers. The manufacturer of the graphics card is supposed to adapt them to their own specific settings. On my system the drivers drastically improved performance, especially Full Motion Video playback. Although this is not very important for TrainSim, it does mean that something has improved. Also, Full Scene Anti Aliasing seems a lot better with the XP drivers.
You could also download some utilities to tweak your card yourself. Sometimes you can get just those extra 2 or 3 frames a second when you increase speed of the card and/or memory by a few MHz.Grtx,Bas Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Soooo, needless to say I run TS at the next lower res, set the settings a bit lower, I see only half the trees, but that is no problem. I enjoy it just the same.
At my settings I get 18, 15, 10, 10, 30, and 20 fps, respectively. For me that is so smooooth.

I do not have that problem as I use three separate removable hard drives. Each has Win98 installed one with FltSim, another with Train Sim, each is dedicated to a 20gig Hard drive, very little else installed, and with 256megs RAM both Sims works well for me. Sep-29-01, 01:10 AM (EST) 27. "RE: JUST BASIC FRAME RATES" I conducted your test, because I didn't see anyone else with a setup like mine. It's not a high-end computer, but maybe someone will find the info useful. I'm not a computer expert, but I'll try to be as specific as possible for those of you who are.My System: AMD Duron 700MHZ CPU on a Gigabyte GA-7ZX motherboard (which uses the VIA KT133 Chipset), 256 MB of PC133 RAM, ATI Rage Fury Pro 4x AGP card 32MB (I don't use the turbo setting in the VIA 4-in-1 drivers), Sound Blaster Live MP3 5.1 Sound Card, and a Compaq V50 15" monitor...All with the latest drivers. I used end-it-all before starting, and I also use a program called RAMPAGE that frees up RAM when it gets low.These are the frame rates I got using the settings you specified:1= 13 (shift+1= 11)
2= 9
3= 8
4= 9
6= 25 After doing this test, I proceeded to try different settings and I discovered that a lot of the settings really had negligible impact on my framerate. For instance, I never got higher than 45 on any setting and going from 32 bit to 16 bit didn't help like I thought it might. By trying to balance out graphics and performance, I settled on these settings: 800x600 32bit with the best graphics setting. Then I went into advanced settings and the only changes I made were to turn off distant mountains and to set the world object density to 7. The WOD seemed to make the biggest difference in framerate for me. Another note...I found that when I set my monitor refresh rate from optimal (which was 90MHZ on my monitor) to 75MHZ, my framerates also went up. I ended up having these framerates using the same stationary train and route:1= 35 (Shift+1= 38)
2= 25
3= 25
4= 25
6= 38 Sorry for this getting so long. Hope someone finds it interesting. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-29-01, 07:41 PM (EST) 32. "RE: JUST BASIC FRAME RATES" G’day 4x4me2,
Thanks for participating in the frame rate readings.
You have me a bit stumped, something would seem to be wrong with your system, but then maybe not.
You say you have a:-
AMD T-Bird 1.3 gigs
Riva TNT2 M64 32MB
Asus A7A-266
Key1 = 6fps
Key2 = 5fps
Key3 = 3fps
Key4 = 5fps
Key5 = does nothing
Key6 = 9fps
Shift+1 = 6fps The frame readings at the bottom of this reply post has a 1gig CPU which is just smaller than your CPU, but has a Geforce2 card.You have a 1.3 gig an extra 9% CPU grunt on his. Realize 9% is definitely not a lot to write home about. Although a Geforce2 card is MUCH better than the TNT2, but it is not all that absolutely mind blowing either. But I would have thought that your frames should be much better than the above. Here is a chap with a Celeron 533 with a TNT2 card. (Similar card to yours) Your readings are sort of doubled his Celeron 533 readings with your 1.3 gig CPUIntel Celeron 533 mhz
nVidia Aladdin TNT2
PC100 Systemboard
Key 1 = 3 fps
Key 2 = 1 fps
Key 3 = 2 fps
Key 4 = 1 fps
Key 6 = 6 fps
Shift 1 = 3 fps
Maybe your readings are correct by using the TNT2 cards with a high end CPU.
With the Geforce2 cards the on-board graphics CPU does a lot of the work, whereas the TNT2 may well be very stunted in that area and your 1.3 gig just works its butt off for not much result.
A now old saying: Match the Video Card to the CPU, and a TNT2 is not matched for best results. So maybe an upgrade to a Geforce2 GTS (priced much better now) or of the like would do the trick for you. Look at the others here with 1gig and above CPU’s coupled to Geforce2 cards and frames would be ROUGHLY what you should expect. (not exactly though, as there are other things that can come into play as well, that get slightly better, or worse frames) When I upgraded from a Celeron 300mhz and a Viper 550 (TNT1) to the present PIII-850 and Geforce2 GTS the frames were about what I expected. I’m not a PC guru, but perhaps someone else here can enlighten you further on this. Maybe someone else with a similar system will put their readings here for you to view.
All genuine readings are important. Well hope this is of some help at least.John********************

I thought I splurged a litle extra and bought the TNT2 thinking that the TNT2 would be sufficient with the 1.3GHz CPU and the AGP video bus then MSTS came out and I was putting this little card to the real test. Looks like I didn't splurge enough. I found some BIOS tweaks that might work so I will have to see otherwise looks like I might have to try the GeForce.Thanks for your input. Oct-01-01, 10:32 PM (EST) 43. "RE: JUST BASIC FRAME RATES" G’day 4x4me2,> Looks like I didn't splurge enough. I presume you read my Post No 37 about the Geforce 2 Video cards about matching video card to Cpu.With your 1.3gig CPU and if your really strapped for cash, (and who isn’t) a 32meg Geforce2 GTS would suffice for now with your 1.3gig CPU. Also unless your planning a 17” or 19” monitor upgrade and going to use higher resolutions in the very near future, a 32 meg (bit cheaper than 64meg) would suffice, otherwise a 64meg would be the best buy and order of the day. Realize the 32meg and 64meg has very little to do with Frame Rates, just extra grunt for screen resolutions, hence why I mentioned any monitor upgrades likely. I have a 64meg Geforce2 only because my next wish list upgrade is a 17” monitor, or maybe a 19” monitor if prices come down some more in the meantime. (highly unlikely)Okay, the Geforce2 GTS is on the very bottom end of your P4 - 1.3gig, but the Geforce3 cards are terribly expensive in comparison. So!…. you NEED to weigh the extra cost, against any extra frames you will or may get, as those extra frames WILL certainly come at quite a cost to you in comparison. Just looking at your system, personally for now to do it on the cheap a 32meg or 64meg Geforce2 GTS would suffice for some time. You should be able to run with everything on in MSTS quite okay in the 1024x678x16 mode on your 15” monitor. I only have a PIII-850 (100mhz) with a Geforce2 GTS with a 15” monitor and as you can see, my Frame Rates are quite sufficient for MSTS, everything is full on except specular lighting and the Sim goes quite well. While Train Sim runs like this I have no need of upgrading for next 12 months or next version. IF you do upgrade let's know on this thread how you went. Am interested.John

Sep-30-01, 09:01 PM (EST) 37. "RE: GEFORCE2 VIDEO CARDS INFORMATION" An article I read on GeForce2 in a PC magazine a few months ago, this may still be of some interest to anyone thinking of getting or upgrading.This concerns the NVdia GeForce family....
Which to choose.Here's how those chips line up.GeForce2 MX: Budget version of the GTS chip running at 175MHz, but with half the full-rate performance.
Offer slightly better performance than the original GeForce 256.GeForce2 GTS: This basic chip runs at 200MHz and offers full-featured, second generation performance.GeForce2 Pro: Only available from selected PC vendors with new systems. Offers 20% more speed than GTS.GeForce2 Ultra: The latest chip offering nearly twice the performance of the GeForce2 GTS, clocking in at 250MHz.The other consideration to keep in mind when choosing a graphics card are price and money.
The basic memory type is SDR (Single Data Rate), DDR (Double Data Rate) doesn't offer double performance and it can be hard to see any performance gains at all on some games.
Not only do maximum resolution and colour depth make a difference to the amount of memory, so do the frame rates.
The choice is either 32M or 64M and that makes a big difference on the price.MATCH THE CHIP WITH YOUR PC.It is NOT smart move to whack a 64M GeForce2 Ultra in your old Celeron 400MHz and expect it to work a dream. You have to match the chip with your PC for optimum performance.Here's a guide.GeForce2 MX: 500Mhz to 700MHz Athlon, Duron, Pentium III.
GeForce2 GTS: 700mHz to 1GHz Athlon, Duron, Pentium III.
GeForce2 Ultra: 1 Ghz and up Athlon, Pentium III, Pentium 4.Hope is of some help. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: GEFORCE2 VIDEO CARDS INFORMATION" G’day Rob20> John thank god for diesal injections pumps....(Conductor + Trainman CP RAIL) Go on Rob, you young diesel chaps do not know what you have missed out on, driving and/or firing Steam. If ya ever get the chance to at least sit in the drivers seat, go for it and then tell me “thank god for injection pumps….” Of course with Diesels just sit back in the cab and drive, but steam was never boring for either crew members as you had to work as a team. Steam was always a Challenge on every trip. She (steam engine) was alive, warm, and you could hear her heart pounding, and you had to feel her up. (eat ya heart out) Ah yes!.. Diesels cannot get anywhere near that. If I had the choice of driving Steam or Diesel again, steam wins hands down everytime, it’s a lost art now. But steam does not make profits for railways and we must progress of course…. Hmmm…. But I do wonder at about this at times…. >Also with that celeron 700mhz and tnt 2 32 meg have a look at my stats again

Oct-01-01, 08:36 PM (EST) 41. "RE: JUST BASIC FRAME RATES" I happen to have both an ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon and GeForce2 MX on hand and was able to swap them around for comparison. Tests were done using John's settings.System: Pentium III 1GHz, 384MB PC133 SDRAM (CAS2), ASUS CUSL2-C motherboard.Video Cards:
ASUS V7100/T GeForce2 MX 32MB, Detonator XP v21.81 (9 Sep 2001). 175MHz core clock/memory.
ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 32MB, 4.13.7075 (20 Mar 2001). 166MHz core clock/memory (equivalent to a regular Radeon 32MB DDR). GF2 MX Radeon 32MB DDR
Key 1: 30 fps 25 fps
Key 2: 25 fps 20 fps
Key 3: 20 fps 20 fps
Key 4: 23 fps 20 fps
Key 6: 50 fps 50 fps
Key S+1: 25 fps 25 fps
The Radeon's drivers are long overdue for an updated official release, and given its DDR memory you'd expect it to be more capable (potentially) than the SDR-based Geforce2 MX. However, there didn't feel to be a great deal of difference between the two cards during actual gameplay. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
