Progress continues on the UP 9000. The Vanderbilt tender is near completion. My current problem is figuring out the front end of the tender. In all of the photos, the front end is in dark shadow so I can't see the shape and the 2D plan view drawings don't provide enough info. I may have to use "poetic license" on it.I've got the Gresley gear, center crosshead and main rod animated. The three cylinders are animated so they are 120 degrees offset from each other. In trying to figure out how to animate the center cylinder there wasn't enough room in my model for the center crosshead to travel. Moving it as forward as possible it still hit the underside of the boiler in it's back throw. I figure some how I had goofed on my modeling. In fact I had. In looking extremely closely at my drawings it appeared that the center cylinder is not horitontal but is slanted downward. I did a little research to confirm and sure enough by slanting it downward the crosshead clears the boiler.Anyway here's the lastest photo.

RE: UP9000 Status Report

Hallo!
Beauty and beast, all in one loco! Can't wait to get my hands on her.
About the problem with the middle cylinder: You could draw a line from the center of the middle cylinder (it's heighth should be known from the front view of the engine) to the center of the second axle. This line should give you the correct angle. Another thing that could give you - at least a little - space for the middle crosshead is the fact that the middle cylinder had a stroke of 32" whereas the outer ones had 33".Good luck with your work and
keep on steamin'!

RE: UP9000 Status Report

I own a whistle off of one of these. Well it's the same kind. A Star Brass mfg. company 5-Chime. That was UP's "Common Standard" whistle. I have tested it on Steam before. But not 200 psi. It was half that. So it was no where near as loud as the if it was on an engine. It's actually not off an actual 9000. It's off a UP 2-10-2 #5020 that was scrapped in Denver. But on the UP, all of the 0-6-0's, 2-8-0's, 2-8-2's, 4-8-2's, 2-10-2's, 4-10-2's, and 9000's had these whistles. But the 800's (4-8-4's) and Challengers and Big Boy's had Hancock steptop 3-Chime steam boat whistles. I'll supply whistle sounds and any other sounds. I have many recordings of 9000's. But that may be making it too hard.Kevin Bush

RE: UP9000 Status Report

Good job with the investigating. I am sure you would have noticed it immediately if you could have seen a shot of the 9000 brand new with the polished cylinder head covers. I will see what I can do for you with the hind end of the tender. Also, add coal boards around the coal space on the tender. Just look at the top part of any of those tenders. They put 1' by 2" boards along the sides and ends of the coal space. That allowed them add another couple tons of coal actually. Without the coal running off the sides. When they filled these things up at the chute, they REALLY filled them up.You might contact Bill Hobbs about a .eng file. He's a scientist of steam!Kevin Bush

RE: UP9000 Status Report

By the way. UP never really painted valves on the outside of the locomotive red. So on the grate shakers outside below the firebox there, lose the red paint man. Thanks,Kevin Bush

Kevin, this is where I got the "red valve handles" from. I know this is a "museum piece" but didn't think they would paint them red just for the fun of it. I definitely want authentic. Any thought's on why they're red here? Yes, I could use authentic whistle sounds and anything else you can share. I'm going to try my hand at putting together the sounds but I might "punt" and call in the reserves if I'm not satisfied. Besides the 3 cylinder cadence and whistle sounds I also want to have the "growl" of steel against steel as the thing rolls by.If you're willing, send them to me at RPertuit@cablelynx.comThanks.

RE: UP9000 Status Report

The museum painted them like that. Simply because it's in California, and because the SP did that sometimes. Look at photos of the 9000 when they first had it all dolled up to send it west to California. No red paint anywhere. The red paint is an SP thing, not UP.I don't know what you mean when you saw the growl of steel against steel. Any parts on those locomotives where there was any where at all, there was a brass bushing not steel. The driving boxes rode on brass binders. That's a very common term in a steam shop "We're gonna drop the binders". All the side rods had brash bushings too. Any growling metal sound would be very bad. Although, some side rod clanking sounds would be very neat and would add a very good touch. Be careful not to make them too loud though. The exhaust from one of these at full throttle would hurt your ears. I mean to where you can "Feel" the sound in your ears. Literally.Kevin Bush

Email me the photos that appear to be dark and I am sure that I will be able to lighten it/them up for clarity without losing detail. Just put in the subject line UP9000 Status as I will retrieve it from the suspect spam.rbrubeck@earthlink.netI am confident that some detail can be extracted for your useRick

RE: UP9000 Status Report

Rick, I appreciate the offer but the real problem is that the front of the tender is blocked by the locomotive. In a few where there's a good angle, the front is totally black in shadow and they're mostly old time photos. I don't mind sending them to you but I really doubt anything can be gotten from them.

RE: UP9000 Status Report

A long time ago I was working on some drawings for the 160c class tenders. Never did finish them on the computer and cannot find the paper ones. Here are a couple of pictures of an SP tender I built in 1.6" = 1' scale, which is very similar to the UP tender. I also took screenshots of the 160c drawing as well as the front of a 120c drawing which is similar. Go to my web page and you can get my e-mail address and you can contact me direct if you need more info or need clarification. Too bad about not knowing the inside cylinder was at an angle. I guess you take for granted the knowledge you have and think everybody knows the same thing.
By the way you are doing a magnificient job on the 4-12-2 and I applaud you and your efforts.Wu Shin

RE: UP9000 Status Report

Lookin real good. Kevin, grab a couple of shots of the front of tender from your brass model. It should be as authentic as well the 9000. They might be of some help. Excellent Work! UP9000 Status Report – image 15

RE: UP9000 Status Report

I was JUST thinking of that. I will. Ron, I have a O scale brass model that was GIVEN to my dad as a BIG thanks for his help in the making of it. A guy named George Kohs produced it. George has his own brass O scale company. And he came to my home one evening about 3 years ago. He knew my dad had helped write the book on the 9000's. My dad drug out tons and tons of old drawings and what not (George strives for the best). At the end of the evening George turned to my dad and said "you're going to get a model you know, I insist". My dad continued to give him tips and George even sent us a sample model for my dad to evaluate, a year and a half before the final production model was ready. Finally, a month ago, we get out factory painted Kohs 4-12-2 #9045 in the mail. And what a BEAUTY!!Pic's later.Kevin Bush

Man that's fantastic! Looking forward to seeing and using the pics. I saw reference to a book by John Bush on steamlocomotives.com and figured there must be a relationship. I'll definitely repaint the valve handles in the grate area. And add the side boards to the tender as you suggest. The term "steel against steel" was intended as a "poetic" term not an "engineering term" (I was referring to the steel wheels against the steel rail.) In my Camelback model I used the technique of cutting off the "chuff sounds" when the regulator is closed (or as close to closed as I can get MSTS to interpret it). The problem is that the Camelback becomes too silent as it rolls by. Except for some exhaust steam sounds it may as well be sliding on ice, not at all realistic. I've got to believe that there is a significant "rumble" when 728,000 lbs rolls by on steel wheels on a steel rail with the regulator closed.

RE: UP9000 Status Report

Yeah, John Bush, that's my old man. Ok I see, you are talking about drifting. When the locomotive is working, the stack talk drowns out all rumbling noises except for side rods clanking and maybe certain hissing if theres steam leaks anywhere. When it comes to drifting, a good engineer puts the gear in the corner. Meaning the johnson bar in full forward. That way, the valve is in full stroke and thus it is getting oil all the way through each stroke, and therefore a lot easier on the valve cages, and also keeps them cool. With everything being in full stroke while drifting and no steam to cushion the load on all of the rods with the throttle being closed, the side rods pound a lot more. That's the bulk of the noise right there. We should also try new safety valve sounds. Louder ones. And the whistle noise should drown out the stack talk.I will get you a recording soon.Kevin Bush
