As a Systems Admin in a reasonably sophisticated environment, I am ready to trash MS perhaps more quickly than most, but this product - so far - is a very reasonable choice. To begin, the MS Anti-Spyware product is a Beta only insofar as the insertion of the MS logos is concerned. The Giant software product had been out there for awhile and was very well thought of by most reviewers prior to its MS takeover. About 6 months before the announcement, I was invited to a web presentation preview of the Enterprise version of SunBelt Software's Counterspy anti-spyware product. The SunBelt CEO was quite proud of the fact that both the standalone and the centrally managed Enterprise version were developed by Giant Software. A quick view of the screens made this clear to anyone who had seen the Giant product. (SunBelt is a prominent vendor of primarily network tools to the corporate market. They do sell to individuals, but their focus is on large customers.) In fact, Microsoft has agreed to provide the update libraries for the SunBelt products until 2007 because of this relationship. As well, Giant supplied the anti-spyware engine for a number of ISP's and MS has undoubtedly continued those relationships as well. For a young 14 person firm, Giant did pretty well for itself and, whatever happens to them afterwards, MS typically does not acquire lousy companies. While most reviewers were skeptical of the MS labeled product just becasue it was MS, almost everyone who has looked at it has agreed that it is a very good tool to deal with an extemely complex threat. As to the issue of loading a route when the product is on one partition and MSTS is on another, the answer is not to shoot yourself in the foot by uninstalling it. Just right click on the anti-spyware icon in the tray and turn it off before you do the install.Jon

RE: MS Anti-Spyware & MSTS

Jon,As another SysAdmin/net engineer, let me add my support to the comments you have made. We have been experimenting with several of the leading anti-spyware pieces out there, none of which have been a total success. Thus, I too was not overly confident of the results I would find with the new MS beta. To my surprise after installing and running it 5 pieces of spyware was found on my system, a system that has been protected by two other anti-spyware programs! The MS piece has so far not caused a bit of trouble. It installs nicely and updates are easy. I continue to use this software on my home system and have not yet needed to disable it to install any new MSTS route or equipment pack either freeware or payware in the month or so I have been using it. It won't be long before this is installed system wide on my school network.

I live in NW Ohio, but my heart is in Cajon Pass.

RE: MS Anti-Spyware & MSTS

Thanks for the reinforcement, luckydoug1!Actually,I need to apologize: this posting was intended to be a reply to an existing thread on this topic. I managed to do a "new message" instead of a "reply ."In case anyone is wondering why this should be of interest to the MSTS community, spyware can bog down a computer to the point of uselessness. Anti-spyware programs, though a long way behind anti-virus programs in efficacy and comprehensive scanning, in my view are just as important to anyone trying to get the most out of their computer. Love that description Anyway, thanks to both of you for the information. I had been prompted to install, saw the 'beta' in the name, looked around and didn't see much positive, so just 'wrote it off'. Think I'll go back and get it .. although, not paranoid in the slightest (mainly just cautious), one can't be too careful. Thanks again.RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com

RE: MS Anti-Spyware & MSTS

Hi,I have been using MS Anti-Spyware since it was first offered and have had no problems of any kind with it. When first run it found three nasties that two other programs missed.Regards,

Waldo

RE: MS Anti-Spyware & MSTS

Hi Jon,It was probably my earlier thread you are referring to. In that I also said it was a great product. The only problem was that when you attempt to run a batch file such as the InstallMe.bat files found in most downloaded routes. It pops up a message saying do you really want to run the batch file. When you answer yes, it runs the batch file, but apparently changes either the drive or the folder so that the batch file does not actually copy anything. To get around this, you then have to click the batch file again, then it runs fine. Not a big problem if you know what you are doing, but confusing to beginners.Mike
