InstallMe.bat and MS AntiSpyware

MS have recently released a program called AntiSpyware Beta1 which is quite a good anti-spyware program along the lines of Ad-Aware etc.Unfortunately it has a bug with implications to MSTS users. If you have it running on your system and your MSTS installation is on a different hard drive. When you try to run an InstallMe.bat file to install a route, you will get a pop-up window telling you that .bat files can be used for bad purposes etc. and asking if you really mean to run it.Answer Yes, (and tick the box which says Remember This) and the batch file runs, but if you carefully watch the DOS window, you will see it says '0 Files copied' after each line.I think what is happening is that when the pop-up window appears, it changes the drive to the drive on which the Antispyware program is installed, accepts your response OK, but does not change the drive back again, so that the batch file is looking in the wrong drive for files to copy.To get around this, close the DOS window and click on InstallMe.bat again, then everything works OK.Mike

Hi, Mike:It did happen to me, with the same symptoms.
What I find strange is that I have both MS AntiSpyware and MSTS installed on the very C:\ hard drive. Anyway, I don't find the MS AntiSpyware very useful.
It ran several times a day and didn't find any spyware items so far.
I'm thinking about uninstalling it.
What would you suggest? Regards...

Hi Eduardo !Your best bet is using NORTON GHOST and create an IMAGE of your Windows O/S System Drive C: after it has been sanitised by running the most up-to-date Virus Checker, SPYBOT, ADAWARE and other reliable programs of that sort.There is one downside to this with machines having only a say 120 Gb Drive C:, there not being another drive partition to store a large size compressed Image into. NORTON GHOST-9 will now do it without having to re-boot into PC-DOS and can also save the Image to an external USB-2 / Firewire hard drive. But creating an IMAGE of huge drives would take some time, as you can imagine ! My WIN O/S files on all machines are all there is on Drive C:, in the case of the WIN-XP only 6 Gb out of 11, taking 3 minutes to create and restore. All the other software is installed on other drive partitions. Paid of handsomely when the System partition gave up not so long ago ! Took me only 3 minutes to restore using the NORTON GHOST Emergency Floppy ! Providing you do not keep installing new Software frequently, this IMAGE being restored by NORTON GHOST will wipe out everything on Drive C: before restoring it.I do this every evening after having done with the Internet, taking just 6 minutes to do on my WIN-98SE Comms machine.I also take another image just prior to installing anything, which screwing up during installation as happens frequently lets me go back to the state it was before. Doing installs of new Software into the sanitised System Drive and the install working as it should, I then immediately take another IMAGE, saved to another File Name to give me more than one to go back to should the need arise. Hi, Otto:I wasn't aware that Norton Ghost was up-to-date now.
I thought that it was an old version, no longer used.
Now that you told me, I will have a try.I think it will also be useful for those people who use only windows 98 and haven't got the System Restore option, as I saw in many older machines.In my system I have my Master HDD partitioned, with the main partition as C: with most of space, for windows XP and most of programs; and a smaller partition E: for Windows 98, that I use once in a while, only for other purposes, whenever I don't want or cannot load under wXP, such as some maintenance tasks, defragment all the HDD, using the printer (it works very badly under XP) and whenever I have to re-format and reinstall windows XP and all my programs, I find it very useful to boot under w98, and from there administer the folders and reinstall wXP from the hard drive.My Slave hard disk has only one partition D: in which I store all my personal data and programs, all my valuable information, even the "My Documents" folder.So I use my Slave drive as a store, and the Master drive for both Operating Systems.
This is the way it's practical for me.I saw in many posts, that many people use their main partition as F;, so I think they use the NTFS system file.
Under NTFS, the CDrom units appear before the hard disks formatted with NTFS.
In my case, I prefer to keep on using the FAT32 system, and Dual boot mode;
You also use both XP and 98 in your machine, so you must need to use FAT32.But I'd like to know if NTFS could bring any slight improvement about the FPS rate.
I don't think so; but I must know what other friends experienced about that.
So, people who prefer NTFS, why do you suggest that?Greetings!

EduardoThe antispyware form Microsoft runs according to the set up you made.It can only run at start up, once a day in a particular time you set or weekly or monthly.
Open : from the task bar
double click the icon, then options then select the setting you need.
In my Pc it is running dayly at 7:00 PM.It found an spyware not detected by spybot and by adaware.Regrads

As long as XP's System Restore had come up... I found out it can have what I personally consider some bad side effects and / or unwanted behavior.I used to think it was about XP preserving itself but as you can go read it will also mess with some of YOUR files.http://www.theeldergeek.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=7979Those that are interested can jump down to the middle where Br5an (me) makes his first post in the thread and read from there.Thanks,

However, I was lucky that I hadn't problems like this so far.In my last post I forgot to say that I disable System Restore in my D: drive, because that's where I keep all "my documents", important data and programs; so that the data remains untouched.
Whenever I have to format the master drive's partitions, I don't miss anything of important, it's just a way to reinstall the OS and the programs back again, from the beginning, in a clear installation.
I just let enabled System Restore in the C: and E: partitions of my master drive, hosting both operating systems. So that I restore only the O.S. back to former settings.But now, thanks to your link, I will pay much attention to those file extensions that might be missed, and perhaps we don't even notice until the day we need them Every time I will do any important change or experiment, I create a restore point.If I have to restore back to am earlier stage, sometimes I try to backup the Routes folder onto another partition, temporarily, because it happened to me once, that I had to restore the system, and I lost a great work building a route; fortunately the restore action could be undone and recovered my work. Hi Eduardo !I like you use only FAT-32 on both my Windows machines, having found no advantage using NTFS in WIN-XP, not needing more than 30 Gb partitions, some of it's overheads and "Indexing" slowing things down. Having smaller drive partitions also makes housekeeping and backing-up easier.O.K., NTFS is said to be more secure than previous file systems but need not worry about that, having a Data Security system like mine in operation ! I now have a second USB-2 MAXTOR 250 Gb external drive in addition to the 120 Gb LACIE and the former had to have a 120 Gb NTFS partition to store an IMAGE of the entire WIN-XP 120 Gb hard drive, including all it's partitions, NORTON GHOST-9 now can cope with ! FAT-32 is limited to just over 30 Gb partitions !

You can change a WIN-XP machine's drive letters with the Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Storage function if you want your drive partitions to show in a specific order !As Brian pointed out, using the WIN-XP "System Restore" function does not roll back the entire previous state of the WIN-XP System Drive folders and files, not touching any rubbish deposited by installs which have gone wrong and heavens forbid, Viruses, Worms, Spyware and the likes !
