Jun-04-01, 08:33 PM (EST) "FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" I was just talking with Mike Geertsen, Train Simulator God at Microsoft, and he was saying they are watching this forum for any bugs that they missed (they know there are always bugs, no matter how hard they try to catch them all).He says that while they are trying to catch them all in the forums, it's useful to have a single thread where they know all of them will be reported. So, report your bugs here. Some things you should report (and try):1) Tell us your hardware. And we mean EVERYTHING. Your video card. Your sound card. Your processor. Your amount of RAM. Your hard drive space available. Have you updated your bios/etc.

2) Tell us your software. Operating System (what version, have you loaded all the updates?). Your drivers for your hardware (all of them, have you tried upgrading all of them? Your sound driver? Your video driver?).

3) What steps have you tried to fix the problem? Is the problem repeatable? (Does it happen at exactly the same place everytime).

4) What error messages, if any, do you see? What behavior happens on screen?

5) Have you tried turning off any software running in background? (Virus checkers, etc)

6) How long has it been since you did a "clean install?" (formatted the drive and installed everything from scratch).

7) Any OS patches you've loaded? (Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 just came out two weeks ago, for instance). Have you loaded all the compatibility and "critical updates" into your OS? (Use the "Windows Update" feature). Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

8) What version of Internet Explorer are you running (IE often loads new components and upgrades your OS). Get the latest at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/

9) Have you updated Windows Media Player lately? Often that helps fix display issues. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmedia/ We can't promise we'll get bugs fixed, but getting them reported and into Microsoft's databases will increase the chance they'll be fixed soon. Thanks!Robert Scoble

Jun-04-01, 10:31 PM (EST) 1. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" Okay. Here's the rundown:AMD Athlon @ 1.2 GHz. 128 SynchDram. CD/R, DVD. Compaq Presario 7000 U.S.
Voodoo 4500 with last drivers certified by manufacter, 11-2000.
DirectX 8.0.(Passing all diagnostics.)
Sound Blaster Audio PCI(Original Equipment with PC)
Latest BIOS and or service pack by AMB.
Media Player 7.0, IE 5.5.
Have Norton Utilities installed, but totally disabled when running graphics intensive programs.Program installed okay.
Upon re-start and execution, I get the following error dialouge:"Create MPEG TASK_CMD is not sucsessful", three times(had to click the box to continue.)Then, I would hear sound, but no video. The only video is a large white box, with black diagonal lines running through it, with "Cannot Find Vids: MP42 decompressor". Experience with Microsoft Flight simulator told me to click or hit escape to by-pass the intro video. Then, program freezes.
Shutting off the PC was the only way to initiate re-boot. Happens every time. Uninstalled and re-installed 3 times, making sure to remove residual folders prior to re-installing. Tried using other drive, same result. No change. I then re-named the intro video file with a .bak extension, to bypass video, but still froze up when intro "Train Simulator Loading" screen, or sometimes on a black screen. Out of ideas. I had a theroy that maybe the drivers for my vid card will support DirectX 8.0, but will not support games WRITTEN for Direct X 8.0, as every game written for DX8 will not work on my machine, even though the drivers supposedly support DX8. Thought of removing the Voodoo and putting in the original card with the newest drivers available, or going out and getting the latest GeForce card. Any ideas? Jun-04-01, 10:52 PM (EST) 6. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" First, really-really enjoying this program - smudges and all. Thanks everyone.I was doing an activity on the NE corridor and noticed that when a yellow cleared to green that my speed limit, at least according to the track monitor, didn't get updated to the higher speed. It would correct itself as of hitting the next signal. It was a bit frustrating because I hit a particularly long block and wanted to make up time, but couldn't because still being limited to the lower speed in spite of the yellow going green fairly early in the block.Let me know if you need more specifics - exact activity, exact circumstances, etc.

Jun-04-01, 11:12 PM (EST) 7. "A Few of Issues" LAST EDITED ON Jun-04-01 AT 11:34 PM (EST) ..err A Few Issues the subject should read...
None of these are system related, but here are my specs: Dell Gigahertz
512 megs SDRAM
GeForce64 GTS w/ Detonator 10.8 drivers
Windows ME
Directx 8.0a I get great frame rates (15 in the very dense areas up to 30's) with max detail in 1024x768x16. I have had no sound or graphics problems (had the grid problem in the cab, but the troubleshooter fixed this) or CTD's I just have a few gameplay issues: 1) I noticed that the GP-38's dynamic brakes are strange. This has to do with the ammeter gauge. If you engage the dynamic brakes and look at the ammeter gauge, it appears that only two notches on the dynamics will max out the ammeter needle! This doesn't seem right... 2) I'm not 100% on this one but, on the Dash 9, you cannot smoothly control the throttle. The throttle seems to jump 10% even with mouse movement. This makes holding a certain speed tricky! I noticed the Acelas and the GP38-2 don't have this problem (haven't tried the others). 3) For activies, I noticed that the passenger comfort/freight durability is VERY sensitive. It makes the longer activities EXTREMELY difficult! Either decreasing the durability sensitivity or at least enabling the user to set it would be great! 4) Not 100% on this one too, but shouldn't the bell button stay down if pressed? (and not have to be held down). This is really only an issue for the GP38-2. All in all, IMHO MSTS is a masterpiece! Nice work Microsoft!

Jun-05-01, 07:54 PM (EST) 24. "RE: A Few of Issues" In regards to the throttle not working smoothly, this is the way the real ones work I believe. At least some for sure, I can't absolutely confirm the Dash 9 . I can't find the best link for the site that best describes this, but take a look at this one. http://www.trainweb.org/railwaytechnical/us-musp.html In the section on Electrical Connections it does reference throttle settings as "notches" Idle - 8. Another site describes the throttle as working in increments and the steps are due to the workings of the throttle governor. Not a bug in the program at all. Actually a function just like the real ones. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-08-01, 04:03 PM (EST) 43. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" I thought the idea of cab signals was so that if you were in, for example, a "proceed" block, and the next signal ahead changed from "proceed" to "clear," your cab signal indication would change and you could resume higher speeds before reaching the next signal.Andy Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-04-01, 11:25 PM (EST) 8. "Freight Car Bug" Anyone notice US2FREIGHTCAR5 is a little bit too short? It appears the programmers decided to use 'us2freightcar4.ace' in the 'US2FREIGHTCAR5' dir but it seems the two cars are not of the same length. The end result is the couplers appear unconnected even though they really are coupled. MSTS thinks 'us2freightcar5' is longer than it actually appears on screen. Try the 'Mixed Goods Traffic Train' consist and look at the flat cars toward the back. Look closely at the couplers. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-05-01, 00:50 AM (EST) 12. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" Some of the Activities are so filled with bugs, its disgusting. On the Marias pass route, the night time grain run, the briefing makes mention of stopping on the main line by a certain mile marker. Then when doing the scenario, a window pops up saying pull into siding #5 which is 2 miles before the mile marker, and its a siding, you do that, and nothing happends. The way a lot of these activities are done are done in such a crappy way. They all are bug filled, and they Assume you know the exact spot to stop. There is no room built into failure. We are not computers, we are freaking human beings, the sim needs to know that! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-07-01, 10:41 AM (EST) 34. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" I found a similar problem with the Hisatsu activity that contains back and fills or turnarounds. When you back up to the correct area there is a signal. If you stay near the signal, it stays red. If you go back some more close to a dead end and then drive forward the signal will be green. So, the activities seem to care where exactly you stop before going forward and the stopping points are not clear.bob Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-07-01, 10:15 PM (EST) 37. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" There are many wonderful things to say about this game. And I expect it to get better. But I expect more from Microsoft out of the gate. I wonder how bad it was before they postponed the release date. It is very disappointing to not be able to trust the "activities" I've run across more than one anomaly that prevents their successful completion. How many more are there in the activities I haven't tried? Unlike other games, especially those from Microsoft, this game promises so much, produces a lot, and yet leaves a black cloud of doubt about the players ability to accomplish the established goals, not from lack of the players skills, but from a lack of polishing by the publishers. Jun-05-01, 10:00 AM (EST) 15. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" My bugs aren't system related so I won't post system specs;1. End of train lights are not in the correct spot. Should be on top of coupler. Some are in the middle of the box car half way up, others are on the right side.
2. SD40 headlight, the top front is 20 feet above the train. I found this when I made it a driveable engine. Over in the engine library I posted the new y and z values to put the lights in the correct spot.

Windows ME, DirectX 8.0a, IE 5.5, Media Player that came with ME.I have 2 bugs to report.1. After about 1 hour of play, the game locks up when I try to switch views. Usually it crashes the computer, but one time it kicked me back into windows. It gave me an error report to send to Microsoft and I did. 2. When you come up to Summit from Blacktail on Marias pass there is a section of track that uncouples your train. If you back up and recouple, you pick up the first car, but the one behind it uncouples. This continues until you have uncoupled and recoupled the entire train. It is right before the switches at the top of the steep grade to the summit. It seems to happen all the time. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-13-01, 04:58 PM (EST) 81. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" Same thing happened to me at Marias Crossovers. I tried going through eastbound in DB, train brakes on, very slow and track speed, made no difference. I was doing an explore with 2 Dash 9's and 20 container wells on the north track. Note: I went
through westbound on same track with same consist OK! Could it be "running against the current" problem? ;pAlso having the "video problem" upon start up, but have yet to load the MP4 fix posted (haven't been able to download for some reason).
Once past the video problem, MSTS works fine.I have a Compaq AMD P-900 with 128MB Ram running W98 SE.
Had to download latest TNT2 video driver for MSTS to
load properly.Otherwise...very very happy with MSTS. Well done, MS!
Now if I could only get that GN GP35 to load... ;pLIN-Z gngoat@gngoat.org

at mile marker 97 and about 82.5 where there are four tracks
the poles holding up the overhead electric lines are sitting in
the middle of the track. It would be nice to see more computer driven trains, some going in the same direction as you, maybe coming off of a side track on
to a line next to yours(4 tracks) where when the tracks go to only 2 you or the computer train would get a red signal to let one or the other proceed. Thanks!

Jun-18-01, 03:54 AM (EST) 109. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" I have had - and do have - similar problems. I would suggest that it is both the card and the driver in combination. The readme file has web addresses to aid in finding the latest drivers. Here are my facts:
DOA until a video driver update (supports DirectX6) was installed. Even though I previously ran games with DirectX7, something got fixed here. I also note that MS installs DirectX8 for this game. Very new stuff.
I have 4MB (AGP) and not everything works. The Marias grain night train will not load. If I try to run a Royalty Scotsman train in the snow, I crash on the load - similar to your crash.
If I set the realism (best graphics -vs- best speed) options for graphics, I can garuntee a crash.
Most of the rest of the time it works on my older equipment, although choppy. I suspect it is memory related. Looking at a G2 upgrade for father's day but considering I'm between jobs... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Using 32 bit mode (800 or 1028) i see garbled printing above the "loading progress bar" when the sim loads au after the home screen. 16 bit displays correctly. All video drivers are up to date2. When using "simple controls" the brakes do not work. They are constantly in release mode and will not respond to hot key or mouse commands. With simple controls OFF they work correctly3. When in track view (#4 key) the train periodically floats above the track. The problem is with the scenery. Specifically the ground cover. Once I enter the gameplay environment the ground cover takes on a very psychedelic texture to it. There are a few brief moments of the real ground cover but go away quickly. The ground flickers when moving and when stationary. Gameplay is not effected. I've tried turning off all the display options and trying different resolutions to no avail. The Beta driver was the answer and two areas had to be set: (a) no FSAA. set to fastest performance, and (b) no Mip Map Dithering.Once the beta drivers were installed (probably a DX8 conflict resolved) and the above settings were in place the problem was solved and I've been riding the rails since. What i have found is:1. Opening video would not run, but i know that is because i am missing the video codecs.
2. Floating roadway in the NE corridor.
3. Several miles of missing poles for the overhead wires (i know what those wires are called, i just can't spell it right so i ain't even gonna try). I believe this is somewhere between milepost 70 & 80.Everything else i have noticed has already been posted, do i won't repeat that, and i imagine that quite a few of these i can fix myself via the route editor (i haven't really done much with that yet).I have one question. Is it possible to recreate passenger diesel locomotives such as the F40PH from an operational point of view. Since the HEP generators are running during normal operation, the locomotive's motor is always revved up. I need to know if it can be simulated where the engine is revved up but still have the throttle control the locomotive. Thanks for MSTS!-------- BUZZ Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I can't say that it bothered me all that much.I'm running a train with 5 dash 9's pulling 50 chemical cars, go thru a crossing where there'a a vehicle waiting for the train to pass. I go to the end of the consist just to see if there's anymore cars waiting at the crossing to see that the one that was there when I crossed is still there but there's anothe coming from the opposite side and goes right through a tank car like it wasn't ever there. There shoulda been blood and guts everwhere! Oh well. I've also wondered why the gates on the crossing guards don't go down, the bells don't ring and the lights don't flash. The doppler of the bells ringing as I go by is sorely missed. At any rate, I'm really enjoying this sim. It's much more enjoyable than any sim I've ever had, and I've had quite a few over the past 17 years. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I'm accustomed to TM4 with it's non-self-lapping brakes and considerable lag between applying the brakes and observing any slowing of the train. In MSTS, it appears that the train brakes come on almost immediately with no lag at all! That doesn't seem right! Or am I missing something? Also I'm noticing a lot of errors in the dynamic braking. Jun-06-01, 08:07 PM (EST) 32. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" That is one of the first things I noticed in the sim. MS seems to not have simulated the time it takes the train line to bleed off (apply brakes) and recharge (release). On a long freight, this can be a LONG delay until the brakes start to apply or release. Also, I don't think the GP38's have self-lapping brakes and it seems impossible to make a reduction of less the 15-20 PSI on either the Dash 9 or GP38. Jun-07-01, 10:52 PM (EST) 39. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" Livery Display problem - same problem no matter where the sliders or screen res are set:NEC: Acela engines are blackish-gray with no Amtrak marking. Passenger cars are fine - with full detail.MARIAS: No BNSF markings or any other on either diesel. They are the proper shape, but look like brown clay. Freight cars are all normal, with full detail.INNSBRUCK: On the steam sims, the problem reverses from above. Engine and tender are fine. This time it's the passenger cars. Long string of grayish-black shapes - no livery of Wagon Lit, etc. Also NO WHEELS - rides "on air" above the rails. Car interiors are detailed and lovely.SETTLE: Flying Scotsman and its Tender are in full regalia. Passenger cars, like the Orient Express, are grayish-black shapes. Again, interiors are great.BOTH JAPANESE LINES: No external marking problems - full details. Tokyo run, however, rides "above" the rails. Unlike Innsbruck, these carraiges DO have wheels. All other scenery is terrific and varies with slider position. Frame rates are low when I push for more detail, but MSTS has done well with this. Even when the frame rates are low, the sim still behaves a lot better than comparable frame rates on TM4.Set-up:
AMD K6-2 350Mhz, clocked around 400.
Creative Blaster TNT
128 Megs RAM
Win98 2e OS
20 Gig HD
50x CD
Sound Blaster Live
All drivers up to dateI'm hoping for solutions to the livery problem, and I've had some difficulty with the program freezing - external view, no sooner than 15-20 minutes into a run. Memory issue? For all that, the program exceeds my expectations on this modest computer set-up. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-08-01, 10:53 AM (EST) 41. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" So far the program seems to work great. The only problems I have found so far are the widely reported bug of the cars decoupling on the Marias Pass route and a problem that occasionally occurs where it locks up my computer. Since the first problem has already been heavily addressed in here I will focus on the second one. The second bug seems to occur randomly when you switch from the interior passenger view to one of the exterior views. In particular switching from the interior passenger view to the exterior cab view by hitting the 2 key. I have had this occur on several occasions on both the Marias Pass and Northeast Corridor routes. I have not yet tried many of the other routes yet but I would expect the same things to occur on other routes. When switching the views it occasionally causes my computer to lock up forcing me to do a hard reboot by turning off the power and turning it back on once the computer has spooled down. I am using a system with a 466 Mhz Pentium II processor, 128 MB of Ram, a rage Fury Pro video card with I believe 32 MB of ram on the card, a Soundblaster Live 3D sound Card and I have plenty of Hard Drive space available on my system. I hope that this helps you guys in fixing this bug. Thanks. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-08-01, 02:50 PM (EST) 42. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-01 AT 02:56 PM (EST)The following items should be fixed in Train Simulator. System specs are unimportant as these are operational and visual errors.1. Dynamic Brakes are ineffective on the Dash 9.2. Dynamic Brakes are not working on the GP38. Amperage gauge shows 300 amps at the SETUP position and 800 amps (Max) at Notch 1. Not correct.3. Locomotive brakes (Independent Brake) are not working on the HHP-8.4. The bell should be activated by pressing the button to turn it on, and again to turn it off. You should not have to hold down the button (or key) to make the bell work.5. The Dynamic Brake control should be infinitive (smooth movement) just like the air brake controls. The sim has 8 set positions just like the throttle. There are no set positions (notches) on the real thing. The CRT display in the Dash 9 is correct in showing positions SETUP and B1 thru B8 it's just the handle does not have set positions.. 6. The alerter is an absolute nuisance because it is incorrect.
(A) The alerter should not work if you are stopped and have the brakes set.
(B) The alerter time out should reset after you have used the throttle, brakes, or horn. In the sim it's every 25 seconds period.
(C) And the alerter time out is speed dependent. If you were going 60mph the alerter would go off every 40 seconds or so, but if you were going 20mph it wouldn't go off until 90 to 120 seconds.7. The Dash 9 in the sim has 3 ditch lights on the front platform.8. The Dash 9 nose is modeled wrong. It slopes down to the front too much.9. Broken coupler problems. I have found at least 2 points where you will get a broken coupler no matter what you do.
(A) The first road crossing east of Cutbank if you are going west. There is a track crossover there also.
(B) The bridge over the highway or the next bridge over the river at Java when proceding west with the Noon Mixed Freight Activity..10. On the Dash 9 in the sim and the GP38 when you move the Automatic Brake Valve towards the Release position the brakes immediately release. That's incorrect, well sort of. On a real locomotive next to the Automatic Brake Valve is a small control called a Cutout Valve. Most of them have 3 positions, CUTOUT, FRT, and PASS, some just have 2, CUTOUT and FRT. Here are definitions for each and how they are used.CUTOUT - All of the locomotives trailing the lead locomotive in the consist are place in this position.FRT - Used for freight trains and is the normal position. In this position the brakes DO NOT RELEASE until the handle is moved all the way back to the Release position. Nothing will happen to the brakes until you get to Release.PASS - Used on passenger trains for the purpose of gradual release of the brakes. The brakes will fully release when the Automatic Brake Valve is moved towards Release if this position is used on a freight train. In Train Sim the cutout valve is apparently placed in the Passenger position. That's incorrect for freight train usage.11. The ditch lights on US freight locomotives do not flash continously. Yes I know that can be fixed in the eng file.

128 RDram
CD-RW
DELL Dimesion 8100
NVidia GEForce2 GTS Pro (original equip w/latest drivers)
Sony Trinitron 21" Monitor
Windows ME (patches installed)
DirectX 8.0(Passing all diagnostics)
Sound Blaster Live(Original Equipment with PC)
Media Player 7.1
IE 5.5 (with all critical updates installed)
Black Ice Defender firewall disabled.Program installs with no errors. Loads with no errors. Immediately after it loads to 100% and tries to switch to the main screen, the monitor goes black, then "blue screens" with the following file error message: EMU10K1f(01)+00021976:OE:0028:FF1601D6 When I press any key to continue, it goes back to the desktop in the 800x600 display mode. Desktop normally running at 1280x1024. Even if I change the monitor settings to 800x600 and then load the game, the same error message displays.I run MS Flight Sim 2000 Pro on this machine with excellent performance so I'm baffled as to what's causing MSTS to fail with this machine configuration.Looking forward to fixes/suggestions.Thanks much. Jun-09-01, 02:42 PM (EST) 49. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" this is a bug on marias pass, not system related. check the MSN fan site for the screenshot. first of all, there is a japanese crossing gate on the Marias pass, and second of all, I see a Washington Monument floating somewhere in the air..on the Marias Pass! shouldn't it be in D.C.? lol. I didn't have time to write down locations, but they are between cutbank and piegan. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Ok, running Windows '98 SE w/no major patches. Running IE6.0. Have ALL latest drivers (Radeon 7115's). Media Player is latest. Now, Sometimes, when switching views, but not always then, I crash to a blue screen and the sound is repeating. If I hit escape, I go to a desktop with no taskbar or icons and have to reset. I am using Humus's Radeon Tweaker (www.rage3d.com). No virus software running in background. Game runs great, mostly, but it's just sometimes it will crash. Haven't driven a train, yet, but the problem seems at this point to be in the tutorials and intro rides....Thanks Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-10-01, 05:28 PM (EST) 52. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" OK the bugs I have found so far, which aren't system dependent:In the North East Corridor, at Wilmington heading towards Philadelphia, there is a scenery bug - if you look to the left there is a different scenery on the platforms to the scenery beyond. Also if you select explore the route in the NEC, then start at Baltimore heading to Philadelphia, you are actually in a tunnel heading towards Washington, and at the end of the tunnel are some buffer stops, which you can drive straight through and contine to Washington.Apart from these and the other bugs mentioned, I think this is an excellent program.Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" Here is a message you are cordially invited to pass on to Mike Geertensen:After wasting an entire weekend in unbelievable aggravation and frustration uninstalling and reinstalling Train Sim, downloading video and sound drivers, changing system settings, etc I have solved my problem. No matter what I did, as soon as I launched Train Sim the screen went black and locked up. I finally Uninstalled the program for the last time, put the cds and manual in the trash can, and in the future when I feel like wasting my money I will get directly to the point by flushing ten dollar bills down the toilet. I'll stick with BVE. Walt Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-10-01, 07:26 PM (EST) 54. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" 1. When sim runs for the first time, \Train Simulator\mprofile.exe runs and creates mdrivers.dat (a profile of the machine that the sim must be reading on start-up). mprofile.exe hangs on mine after creating an mdrivers.dat file that may be incomplete. Have to kill mprofile.exe from task mgr. Running mprofile.exe alone hangs too.2. The shortcut to start Train Sim is: \Train Simulator\launcher.exe - rungame. Launcher.exe eats up all available CPU and the sim runs at 1FPS or worse. So, I have to start the sim using just train.exe. Frame rates are then decent (avg. 18-28+).3. Quitting train sim with ESC goes to a black screen with a Train Sim title bar, but has no control buttons on the corners. No task bar display either, and can't shift-tab back to Win2k. Have to kill train.exe in task mgr. to get out.4. Frequent lock-ups when using outside views. Sound continues in small loops but machine has to be re-booted.5. Start-up video codecs missing and causes the "vids:MP42" error.Other than those items, the sim is totally cool. Looking forward to getting these items fixed.450mhz PII 128mb ram

Jun-17-01, 12:42 PM (EST) 102. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" Just to follow up here... I ended up working with MS Support on this, and finally decided to just upgrade the voodoo 3. I replaced it with a GeForce2 Pro 64mb card and am using the nvidia 12.41 drivers. It completely eliminated the lock-ups while in the game, and certainly made a noticeable difference in graphics and frame rates. It still won't go back to Windows desktop on exit (I have to kill the process in task manager), and I have to start it with "train.exe" instead of "launcher.exe -rungame", but that's all workable. The sim is pretty cool. -Mark

Jun-10-01, 10:14 PM (EST) 58. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" Has anyone had problems using MSTS with a TBS Montego II sound card? I got my copy of MSTS yesterday as a birthday present, and after I installed it, I was really looking forward to trying it out. Unfortunately, when started the program, I got a message some of the other members of this forum have also gotten regarding incompatible sound cards and updated drivers.Since my PC is Dell, I was directed to their support site for updated drivers. After installing the latest drivers from Dell, however, I still have the problem. I have tried sending a trouble report to Microsoft, using that feature of MSTS, but when I select the option to send the report, the computer locks up.If anyone else has encountered this problem, I'd appreciate any advice you can offer. Jun-11-01, 11:28 PM (EST) 68. "Some older Sound/Video Cards sold as Dell OEM don't support DX8" While working out the problems I had getting MSTS to start this weekend, I found out that even with updated drivers, the OEM sound and video cards that came with my Dell XPS R450 will keep me from being able to use MSTS on my PC. These same limitations will also keep me from being able to enjoy FS2002 when it comes out, so now I have to decide if I want to spend the money on upgraded cards. Unlike some gamers, I don't upgrade at the speed of the Acela just to have the best, most modern PC around. I'm more of a steamer, trying to get the most out of my older, reliable machine without trying to ask it to be something it isn't. What the heck's a Gigahertz anyway? The cards I have that are causing my woes are the Turtle Beach Montego II A3D sound card and the ATI XPERT98D AGP 2X video cards that came from Dell when I bought the system. After making sure that I had the most recent drivers from Dell, I spent a little time troubleshooting with the Microsoft tech, and he was the one who had to break the news to me, and gave me some recommendations for upgrades to the cards.MSTS runs like the Acela, and my poor old Mikado-class PC can't run with it. Maybe if I increase the size of the boiler, increase the area of the grate, and shovel in a lot more coal, I can give it a run for the money!! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-12-01, 11:25 AM (EST) 71. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" Simulation LockupI am running on a Dell Dimension XPS R400, Pentium II, 400 MHz, 256 SDRAM, Windows 98, DirectX 8.0a, with a Guillemot geForce 256 3d Propher 32 MB video
card (updated to Nvidia 12.41 drivers) and a Turtle Beach Montego A3D sound card (updated to the current Dell 4.06.1187 drivers) with hardware
acceleration off. When I first loaded the program and tried to run I got a error screen that talked about a possible incompatible sound card and the need to tune off
hardware sound acceleration). Before updating drivers the program would come up with the load screen and then after loading go black and lock up.After loading up the newest drivers (for the Dell), I STILL get the sound card message and when I say continue the program loads and I was able to run the diesel tutorial fine, as well as make setting selections. When I go into Take a Drive or into an actual activity the system runs fine for about 4 minutes and then just freezes. The sounds continues but the screen lock on the current scene and the keyboard locks up. I seems time related and is repeatable. The scene is different depending on the train speed I select to run at.All my aircraft simulations including Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulation 2 runs fine and did as well before the updates.I plan on trying a complete reinstall of the Trainsim. If this doesnt work, try switching back to the Detonator 2 drivers.
Anyone using VOODOO cards, ecspecially PCI versions, i.e. voodoo3 2000 etc. I beleive the chipset on those cards were the savage4, made by the company S3. they put out a bunch of Beta drivers, and a utility to tell which chip you had, that worked very well for me, one of my PC's had that voodoo 2000 card, and savage beta drivers made flight sim 98 work.

Anyone else with specific graphic problems, try lowering your resolutions to 800x600 and your color to 16 bit on your pc and then run the game. Ive heard of some pc's having trouble doing the flip from high resolution down to something else, and vice versa. Escpecially non-intel cpu pc's. Jun-12-01, 10:03 PM (EST) 76. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" I have not read through all the messages in this string, so some of what I am reporting may already have been addressed.I am running a Tiger System PC, Intel Celeron 350, SIS 630 display adapter, with 184MB RAM, on a 4GB partition (2GB free) of 12GB hard drive (total 6 GB free). My OS is WIN-ME, and I have updated all my video and graphic drivers. Most of my observations, however, do not pertain to my PC, but seem to be glitches in the game design. And most are related to the Northeast Corridor Explore Activity, where I have spent most of my time.
1. Foremost, why doesn’t TSUNPACK.EXE work? When will a fix be released?2. Why does sounding the horn trigger the bell? I have ridden trains since 1948 and have heard diesel horns sound at crossings, bridges, and tunnels without once hearing a bell ring. As they say in the modeling world, “it just ain’t prototypic.”3. As for the bell sound, it’s just plain wrong. The bell does not sound with a rhythmic “ding-ding-ding-DING” as the one in MSTS, but a static “ding-ding-ding-ding” until it stops. Steam locomotive bells could be rung with a “signature” rhythm that individual engineers applied (as they did the whistles), but diesel bells are mechanically controlled, and the engineer cannot do anything other than turn them on or off – and completely independent of the horn!4. On the NEC, catenary supports are missing at MP 22.5, between MP 77.0-71.5, and between MP131.0-127.0 (on adjacent line, right hand side, northbound).5. Frequently, the overhead signals do not change to red as the train enters the block.6. Although the game offers an option of departing Baltimore for Philadelphia, and departing Philadelphia for Baltimore – “you can’t get there from here” because the track is not really connected between the end points (this happens at that really neat flying crossover at MP 21.5, where the tracks are not all connected).7. Northbound at Baltimore, the track design is different from leaving Baltimore as the start point than it is mid-route Washington to Philadelphia. In the first instance, there are two tunnels with two tracks to the left and one track to the right. In the second instance, each tunnel has two tracks.8. Southbound from Philadelphia it appears the designers first attempted to replicate the hanger cable for the catenary wire, but this is not consistent and disappears altogether as you travel south.9. At the same time, there appears to be TWO wires at MP 65.0, 66.5, 69.0, just before 81.5, 85.0, and 128.0.10. In the vicinity of MP 90.0 the frame shifts side to side several times.11. Trackside views at bridges many times take you under the bridge. Interesting view.12. Pacing views at tunnels (observed in the Marias Pass activity) change the orientation to the train to a much higher angle than the original view. In the trailing view, this means the locomotive is no longer visible – and there appears to be no way to get back to the original angle.13. Upon executing an emergency stop mid-run from high speed, the track sounds continue at high speed – even though the train is at a dead stop.14. At MP 108.0 there are three breaks in the southbound track.15. In Winter setting, the deciduous trees still have leaves and they are still green.16. Marias Pass Explore Activity: there are auto sounds (which on NEC indicate you’re in an urban setting) in the middle of nowhere.17. Marias Pass Explore Activity: a “moiré” effect is immediately in front of the locomotive in all views on the explore activity.18. Marias Pass Explore Activity: at MP 1157.8 the snow shed has no roof.19. Marias Pass Explore Activity: Why is it snowing INSIDE the snow sheds?20. Marias Pass Explore Activity: At start of Explore activity, as the train moves forward, in the far distance it appears that the base of the mountain on the right is covering portions of the track. As the train moves forward, however, the mountain appears to slide off the track – sort of a “reverse landslide”!21. The Genesis Locomotive is either too tall or the cars are too short – the cars should be taller than the loco.22. After downloading a trainset file that allows me to run the Geneses locomotive, the Genesis Consist is inaccurate: unless this is a “train fan” run, no Amtrak train is all lounge cars! Why not a set of SuperLiners with coaches, diner, lounge, and sleepers? (Also, the window columns on the lounge cars at not in line toward the rear of the cars.)Finally, a couple of suggestions:First, why can’t there be a “go-to milepost” feature similar to MSFS’s lat-long "slew" feature?Second, why can’t activity start settings (time, weather, start and end points, locos and consists, etc.) be saved, again, as in MSFS?Thanks for listening. This is a great game, so don't think these comments are negative. I just want to make sure it can become a much BETTER game - perhaps the best of the genre. Hope this helps. Jun-13-01, 00:10 AM (EST) 78. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" I gave up on getting my train down the mountain in the Marias Pass, Noon Mixed Frieght Activity. I need to learn a lot more on those brakes. So, I went on to the last activity in the Whitefish Yard.I did find a third similar error when coupling. Again I got the "MSTS Encountered An Error" message and this time I was going very slow - 2 mph. This time I hit Later and did not try to send a report. So, instead of locking the computer, it closed the whole MSTS program and went back to the desktop. It seems that there are two problems. One is getting the MTST error when coupling the frieght trains (sporatic). The second is getting a freeze or program close when the Send or Later button is hit (every time I tried it.Still lots of fun. Great set of issues in the previous post. Jun-13-01, 07:06 PM (EST) 84. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" As the originator of this string, I received a very insightful response to the issue of the bell sounding with the horn and the sound of the bell from someone who should know -- a professional locomotive engineer. The response (which came in two separate emails) is combined below. I should note that the reference to the sound and cadence of the bell ringing is for the GP-38. The following comments are offered as clarification -- in the same spirit the original notes were made.====================================I am a real Locomotive Engineer for a major US railroad and I thought you might like to know something "2. Why does sounding the horn trigger the bell? I have ridden trains since 1948 and have heard diesel horns sound at crossings, bridges, and tunnels without once hearing a bell ring. As they say in the modeling world, “it just ain’t prototypic.” "3. As for the bell sound, it’s just plain wrong. The bell does not sound with a rhythmic “ding-ding-ding-DING” as the one in MSTS, but a static “ding-ding-ding-ding” until it stops. Steam locomotive bells could be rung with a “signature” rhythm that individual engineers applied (as they did the whistles), but diesel bells are mechanically controlled, and the engineer cannot do anything other than turn them on or off – and completely independent of the horn!"On a real Dash 9 locomotive the bell does indeed start to ring when you blow the horn. The Engineer must then manually turn the bell off. This is done as a added safety for grade crossings. Not all locomotives have this feature but definitely all locomotives made in the last 5 years. So it is absolutely correct in MSTS.... the GP-38 would not have the automatic bell feature. Not to say that it couldn't be equipped to have it, but being an older locomotive I haven't seen any that do. As for the Acela, I really don't know. I would say probably yes. All new freight locomotives are equipped that way. The Genesis (P40 or P42) does since it is really just a 4 axle cousin of the Dash 9.

The purpose of the bell ringing after blowing the horn is, it is a rule requirement on most (if not all) railroads to ring the bell approaching all grade crossings. Some Engineers don't turn on the bell to do that, so they just made it automatic. It is supposed to be an additional safety issue at grade crossings (meaning an additional warning sound) but most of the time on the ground with the engine revved up and the horn blowing you might not even notice the bell. Probably on your train ride with the train up to speed you didn't hear the bell but when it was going slower approaching a station stop you did hear it.

Like I said on the newer locomotives the bell is barely audible in the cab so in a passenger car you might not hear it either. As for the bell sound , it sounds pretty realistic to me. The tone and pitch are right on but inside of the cab of a Dash 9 with the windows closed it would be barely audible. I haven't noticed the bell volume getting louder sometimes if that is what you meant.I just thought you might like to know some things are not bugs.

Jun-13-01, 05:31 PM (EST) 82. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" The mouse will not control all of the functions alluded to it. It will blow the horn and make short term (near-instantaneous) applications of sand. It will also turn on and off the lights. However, it will not work any of the throttles and brakes - you can indeed "grab" these controls with the mouse, but it will not effect any changes. In some cases, it will move the throttle or brake handle a bit, but it will snap back instantly without any effect. For the future, you will need to move closer to FS in the way TS handles add-on cars and engines. Specifically, you will need to use something like the "alias" entry in the FS panel and sound files for loco panels and sounds - no sense replicating these files dozens or more times on a drive. And perhaps most important right now, detailed track plans with all tracks, sidings, turnouts (switches) and so forth indicated, so that, when exploring, we don't go tearing into a dead end! Some indication of the reasons for reduced speed limits on the NE corridor would be in order as well - no reason for 40mph on a 4 track main that was built for over 100mph, unless conditions have deteriorated since Atterbury's PRR was responsible for the maintenance!A.L. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your Bugs in MSTS 1.0 Here" Given five days without courtesy of a response, I conclude (as a Microsoft VAR of six years standing) that once again Microsoft has botched the cardinal rule of management. The vendor is absolutely responsible for the actions or shortcomings of their third party sources. Once a product ships, you don't sit in the background watching, you get with it!
This is yet another Microsoft outsourcing calamity. My QA sources told me this POC wasn't ready for the market and they were right. When a product manager's ego is more important than the corporate image we get the kind of silly scurrying we see in this inane forum. My problem is that, as a service provider I am hard pressed to collect from clients who installed the thing and can't get it to run. Particularly when I have yet to find a machine it will run on (now at eleven). But, as a stockholder, there are actions we should take to attempt to prevent this sort of fiasco in the future.End of vent.I will continue with the marketing folks who handle "real" products. ATI Technologird RAGE P/M Mobility AGP 2X w/ 8MB Video Ram
Win2000 ProfessionalI can start the program all ok, I can select the route and train and all ok, but when it starts to load everything up, I get a bunch of error message like 'Can't add car Acela (uid:200000) to world.', 'Can't add car AcelaEndCar (uid:200001) to world.', etc all the way through. And then wants to send an error report to Microsoft (which I have done). Obviously these messages are from the NE Corridor route with the Acela train, but I get the same thing with any train, on any route. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no difference. I tried going to the ATI website for updated video drivers but they said to see the manufacture's website for drivers since they customize drivers for the system, but my computer manufacture (Quantex) is now Ch 11 and the website is down and all. I am also not sure that this is really a video card issue.Any thoughts or ideas folks? I know others got the program to work in Win2k Pro.Thanks

Great game...a few issues though...
Why no manual? Was that a cost-cutting measure? Is the Sybex guide useful? Is there a way to maybe bring the CD to Staples or Office Max or Kinko's and have the manual printed?
Ok here are my Specs...
PII 450
96 Meg of RAM
10 Gig HDD
Maestro 2Meg Integrated sound Card ( w/latest driver from
Micron)
Voodoo 5500 PCI (latest driver)
Got an error trying to load the "Riding the Yellow" activity. Tried to send error report to MS and PC froze.
Graphics are "garbled" in tunnels (Not a choice in Troubleshooter)
The seams in the cabs were fixed by the troubleshooter, but have since returned.
Telephone poles along the NE corridor are on the rails (or at least VERY close to them)
My Acela went into emergency on the "Bridge Damage" activity for no apparent reason. A 45 MPH zone was approaching (on the top of the track monitor) but I was no where near it.
Sound occasionally "Freaks out" (sounds like interference or static, sometimes like a fax machine) sometimes it will correct itself, sometimes I have to save the sceneario and load it again. That's about all I can think of...This is a great game with LOADS of potential. Can't wait for some recreations of the NYC Subway system. BTW if anyone wants some detail help on a project like that, please E-Mail me....Thanks in advance to anyone that can help with the above...Joe

Emergency braking for decoupling to simulate prototype practice when air line breaks (no more discovering half the train is gone who knows where!)2. Dynamic braking for all locos in consist.3. Track kink fixes. (get the MOW people out there pronto!)After three days of play, mostly fun, some frustration, these are my only real concerns. Excessive derailments are a problem, but still not sure how much to blame program for poor modeling of train handling and how much to blame the novice engineer for botching the job. As noted, the Hi-Line is a real roller-coaster ride in many parts. I've taken care of derailments by turning off the option until they patch the train handling issues.

If you go to the cab view before you reach the center of the town it will not freeze and once past the freeze point you can go to the outside view backup the train before the freeze point go forward and it will not stop or freeze up.This also happens to me on the marias pass route start at west coram going towards red eagle outside view first town where there is a road underpass as soon as the train touches the bridge freezo get in cab view just before bridge freeze point can pass to other side sure enough go to outside view can back up come forward no freeze. This can be done over and over again.Once past this first freeze point the rest of the route is fine no problems.I first though it was a sound card problem but Sound plays ok from start to end of route. Jun-16-01, 07:21 PM (EST) 100. "Catenary Wires hang in curves!" Is it me, or do the catenary wires in MSTS hang in curves? Obviously is not physically possible in the real world (without using a radius pull-off) for a wire under tension to run in anything but a straight line between two points. The fact that curved catenary is happening suggests that either the track curvatures in MSTS are too high, or the catenary masts are too far apart. This is by no means a complaint, merely an observation.Cheers.Andy. Jun-16-01, 09:05 PM (EST) 101. "RE: Catenary Wires hang in curves!" I believe catenary does hang in curves, but the designers must have decided to leave out a lot of the support cabling -- which can be quite intricate, especially in yards.I notice the cable from which the transmission wire hangs exists near Washington Union Station and 30th Street Station, but disappears mid-route. Eliminating this detail probably helps with frame rate. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

>bob Hi Bob, Its the name of overhead wires in general. The point is that they CAN'T curve! try it! hold a piece of string - wire - cotton - anything - one end in each hand. Now move your hands apart so the wire goes under tension. Is it straight or curved? The in real life the only way to acheive the effect of a curve is to have a horizontal wire attached to the catenary wire midway between 2 masts, and have it pull the catenary wire off to one side (known in the U.K. as a "radius pull-off"). These are normally only seen over extremely tight curves e.g. in yards or over complicated junctions - not on mainlines with 125 mph limits.Cheers, Andy. Gosh, back when I was trained (bad pun) the catenary curve was (still is) the natural curve taken by a loaded suspension cable.
It is the curve of the messenger wire, not the delivery wire.BTW, in your example, it (the pulled thing) is still curved, be it ever so slightly. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-18-01, 10:51 PM (EST) 116. "Signals" Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe there is a fundamental flaw with the handling of the signals in MSTS, if not, than the flaw is in my understanding of the signals.I am basing my observations on local CSX and FEC operations in Florida, and perhaps these may not apply to the lines in the sim, but as I understand the signals I am familiar with, they are used to indicate two primary pieces of information. One, whether the next block (or more) is clear, and Two, at what speed the train is authorized to move through switches, crossovers, etc.In MSTS, at least in the Marias Pass and NEC lines, the signals seem only to indicate how many blocks are clear ahead of the train, regardless of any reversed/diverging switches that are in those blocks. Signals seem to strictly show "Stop" for no clear blocks, "Approach" (yellow/30 MPH) for one clear block, "Approach Medium" (yellow over green/45 MPH) for two, "Approach Limited" (yellow over flashing green/45 MPH) for three, and Clear (green/max speed) for four or more clear blocks, at least on NEC. The speeds allowed through switches seems to be whatever the authorized line speed is at that point and are no way reflected in the signal indications. If I understand signal rules correctly, an "Approach Medium", for example, indicates that the next block is clear and that the engineer should proceed at line speed through the block as long as he/she adjusts speed as necessary so that the train is at no more than "Medium" speed (45 in NEC?) by the time it reaches the next signal, which implies that after the next signal, there is a reversed switch, or something else rated for "Medium" speed. I would expect that second signal to indicate "Medium something", such as "Medium Clear" to indicate that the engineer should travel through the reversed switch at "Medium" speed and then proceed at line speed. However, in MSTS the engineer is expected to slow the train to "Medium" speed before reaching the "Approach Medium" indication, which, in short blocks, can be quite a problem. Is this correct? Also, there are several places on the NEC where the signals seem to be facing the wrong way for some of the "interlockings", or may be placed in the wrong locations. Some of them seem to be after sets of switches instead of before them, which can cause some traffic problems when creating activities? Is is just me???Anyway, maybe MS just wanted to "keep it simple". Regardless, great job MS! I really enjoy the simulator. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
