Jun-04-01, 08:28 PM (EST) "FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" I was just talking with Mike Geertsen, Train Sim God at Microsoft, and he and team are considering things that could go into future versions of Microsoft's Train Simulator. So, he is interested in seeing what you want. Post anything you want here, but try to keep it brief, doable (no "we want the entire world's tracks"), and something you think would really improve the game and increase the chances you'll buy future copies. This is +not+ a place to post bugs, or gripes about the current version. It's just a place to say "I'd like to see ABC in Train Sim."No promises, but Mike says they'll read and consider every idea. Thanks!(Please do repost previously-made wishes. We want this to be a complete thread so we can hand this over to the team).Robert Scoble

"RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" *Somet things is obvious like more tracks, more trains so i won't say that, but it would be nice to have more voice overs in the game. When I took my last trip the conductors was always talking to someone on the radio.
*It would be nice to have people in the seats and waiting for the train. Not so much walking around that would be very hard but just standing and seating would be nice.
*A better editor with user friendly controls, with written docs. To hard to work at read on the same computer.
*Add-on activites that put you through more stuff.
*More options to make it easier for younger people, there are our furture you know.
*Better views, you have some nice ones, but I would like to be able to move around the cabin.
*A lighter editor in the game so that we can work on the fly, the easier you make it for peoleto make trains and routes the better it will be for all.
* I can't help it, I would like to see a paper manual I would be willing to pay more but nothing crazy. The game is based on a very complex machine, so Microsoft treated it like it and give at a good manual that it deserve. You put out a great game Microsoft and we really appreciate the effort that you put into it and I hope you sale 5 million copies!

Jun-04-01, 09:38 PM (EST) 2. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" I would like to see a career mode or more of a grading system with rankings. Also maybe some unexpected rules compliance testing. An engineer could be disciplined on his work record etc..
I'm not complaining. I am extremly impressed with this sim so far... much thanks! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Overall this is a really impressive sim.The only things I would like to see would be more realistic damage modelling, rear interior views for road diesels like the GP-38 and SD-40.I would like to see some classic American stuff from the late 40's to the late 50's.Late steam and first generation diesels and colorful passenger trains.Maybe this stuff can be released as addon packs? Aug-05-01, 10:46 PM (EST) 202. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Not sure if this has allready been mentioned, as I haven't got time to read all the replies....But what I'd really like to see in future add-on's/versions of MSTS is some British trains and routes in the game set in the present day, or maybe even the 70s or 80s featuring some classic locomotives such as class 47, class 33, class 55 deltic, etc, etc. That would make me happy! And also it would be great to see some people in the game, especially on platforms. It would be more rewarding arriving at the stations and seeing a crowd of people awaiting to board the train/s. These people need not be moving though, they could just be stationery. They could of course also have train drivers on the trains you pass, plus people in the carriages too. I know there are people visible in the game, but they seem to be placed rather oddly right next to train tracks where trains of up to 135mph pass by! Are these people contemplating suicide??!!Have to say though, MSTS is a FANTASTIC game and it will keep me entertained for many years to come! Well done Microsoft! Jun-30-01, 06:49 PM (EST) 119. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" How about doing some "modern" British stock?? Like doing the Settle-Carlisle run behind an EMD Class 66, Class 156 Sprinter (2 car Diesel railcar) or English Electric Class 37 (they sound like Alcos!!??) The new Virgin Electric Pendolino or Diesel powered Voyager could be done (come to think of it, I might have a go a reskinning/rehashing an Acela....)RegardsChris Ibbotson

And you have to maintain and upgrade as time goes on. Earning money for proper timely deliveries. Also I'd like to see the West Coast or Central Valley of California tracked out.Amtrak F59PHI California Paint Scheme. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-25-01, 10:16 AM (EST) 190. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" I would like to see the Editor's be more user friendly. Make to display so us user's of older computer's could use the Editor. My computer does not accept resolutions above 800 x 600. The current program only runs on 1024 x 768. Micro Soft would get more sales if they catered to all of us, not just the ones with the big new computer's. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-04-01, 11:09 PM (EST) 6. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" One of the very cool things about this sim is that I can not only go to a different place, but also a different time. I can imagine that down the road as the modeling of railroads goes electronic, that MSTS needs to accomodate this architecturally. What would be nice then, is that objects not only have a place, but a time. That is, track beds, buildings, whatever, have placement information as well as the time period for which that placement is valid. As an example, maybe there is a certain siding that only existed from 1947-1963. That siding would only be mapped if the simulation you were running was during that era.As you can see, I'm hoping that some day the architecture will support continuous connection between routes. It's also hoping for reusable objects that can be loaded as pertinent. But to do that, you need to give both placement and time information for a historically accurate (within modeling terms ;^) ) scenario.BTW, I don't expect this for 2.0 (unless maybe the architecture is already hiding underneath...?). But if we can start an architecture migration and support towards this early on...I just started enjoying MSTS this past Saturday. My cost for this enjoyment is $3/hr and falling. :^) !!

"RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" 1.Basically a world scenery model (accurate terrain as seen in the nicely textured terrain in the game already) with laid tracks-but we can lay tracks ourselves-psss make it easier(to lay them).2.Also an add on with the TGV and Shinkansen (Bullet) trains. Plus you can do the Blue Mountains (OZ) with the Indian Pacific train. Last but not least a Canadian Rockies passenger and goods trains through Vancouver to Calgary. If the scenery model was laid out as I stated, we could drive ANYWHERE in the world REALISTICALLY!
3.Also how about free mode for driving cars/trucks etc on roads. This could add a different element to the game. Maybe if it was nice enough you'd really get sales moving!4.If you really want to promote the game get some stickers made up and everyone to stick them on their car! They love this game so much they would stick it without thinking!I haven't even played it yet and its exciting!

I think more modern electrical lines should be modeled with more trains! I happen to live in the UK and have my copy now (shipped from USA by a friend). I think that we need more routes for all countrys NOT just the USA. Routes such as the GNER eastern mainline(UK) and the euro tunnel.
I live in Newcastle Upon Tyne so happen to live VERY close to the carlisle route modeled and find it fantastic..only 1 thing bugs me tho.....the fact that it is from the 20's! I would prefer it if ALL the routes were from the modern day.Just my views and wishes..............

Jun-05-01, 08:18 PM (EST) 25. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" The number one thing I'd like as an improvement would be better AI dispatching. The current one gets confused too easily. I know this isn't an easy task, probably quite complicated to program, but it would be great if possible. It would really improve the ease of making user-created routes workable when there's heavy AI traffic, and make possible some very cool activities.I would love seeing a route simulating World War Two conditions in the US--lots of military traffic, maybe with part of the route including a port city terminal with docks and such to work on. Jun-06-01, 10:26 AM (EST) 27. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" So far I've been generally happy with the sim, though there are
some minor things that I think should be included in this or later releases of this sim.
1)Elevation& superElevation of curves and approaches to curves
2)rolling stock sway( though this might be too complex for consists of over 20 cars).
3)Proper derailments, ie. when travelling at just above posted speeds you do not derail. For example all NE corridor rail is 135 lbs - 155 lbs cwr so it is highly unlikely you will cause the rail to fail at 120 if it's a posted 110. BTW that corridor is actually rated for 150 but the catenary keeps speeds lower.(I guess this could be modified in the Activities editor?)
4)More developement and documentation (read simplification) on the editors. So that mods can be more easily made.( I tried to make a shortline in the boston,ma,usa area but I could only add japanese track...)
5)Route editor height import feature. God knows this is a complicated thing, but it would be nice to have approximately
the proper heights along a newly created route where only touching up is required.
6)On street track. This might not be wise because of collisions with cars and such.
7)Track that can be both supplied by third rail and catenary or not at all. So that some routes can have portions that are
electrified and some that are not.
8)Tutorials on how to animate a Steam engine, create properly scaled stock and buildings; would probably be useful.
9)This one might be difficult (and nit picky) but, Acela Expresses actually tilt into the curves and make specific noises
as they are doing so, at about 30 mph you can hear the tilting mechanisms turn on/off.
10)A track editor that allows you to set up an entire track route without having to be in a 3d space ie) something like the route editor but allowing you to set up numbers of tracks, curve radii, place switches, select electrification types/including none along those routes in red(or unidentified). It would then be much easier to modify the route in 3d, since you allready have some starting point.
Kinda a long list but as MS Flight Simulator has evolved, hopefully this will too. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Of course, it has to be more than just visual; the train

Jun-16-01, 08:34 PM (EST) 42. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" LAST EDITED ON Jun-16-01 AT 08:35 PM (EST)Hi Tom,
Good to see you here.
A simple consist editor would greatly expand the game utility. I don't want to have to edit a complex activity inorder to experiment with a new engine or consist.
A few flatland routes (Milwaukee Road in Minnesota and South Dakota) with some branch lines to work would enable a more real feel (and especially with intersecting railroads as well).
A much easier way to add new equipment (I still can't get 2 SD40s with different liverys to work properly and I can't get a SD45-2 or SD24 to work if these are also present with the SD40 from which they were based). I know I am not setting up the folders correctly, but this process should be much easier in the install area if addons are to succeed, and this is going to determine the success of the sim.

Jun-15-01, 06:20 PM (EST) 36. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Wish list for future version:Fewer impatient purchasers.
This sim is only a week old and already we're discussing future versions? Scant little time for the scenery, route designers, and painters to give us all the add-ons that open architecture promises to deliver. I think in 6 months most of us will have more rolling stock than we need, and we'll have plenty of nifty routes to explore. So, I'm pretty satisfied that MS has delivered an excellent sim with unlimited possibilities. Thanks MS!Honestly...I'd like the opportunity to have some inter-urban electrics or trolleys modelled, and time period appropriate scenery add-ons.Maybe the chance for something like the Chicago EL system would be cool....elevated trackwork running through the downtown?Maybe conductor callouts with a voice that would call out the upcoming station...similar to the air traffic control voice programs we now have....with different regional 'dialects' and characteristics.People. It's one of the few things missing from the sim...even static object people at the stations would be welcome as a minimum.Continue to develop the sim so that the greatest majority of folks can enjoy it...not just the ones with the most RAM and fastest CPU's and hard drive space. Just my input. Thanks to Microsoft for an impressive version 1. Well done. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-16-01, 04:13 PM (EST) 41. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" 1) People at the stations, in the passenger cars, and in the locomotive. It is so weird to view the engine(s) passing with no one driving!
2) Sound going through tunnels needs to modified, e.g. echo sound and louder.
3) Add a map feature so I know where I am. F6 doesn't always work in the middle of nowhere! I also get lost not knowing which track/switch to take. I do a lot of backing up!
4) Can anything be done about the moire(?) problem I am having, especially on Marias Pass. When moving, the track in front of the locomotive "shimmers" badly. Very annoying. It does this in all resolutions.
5) Need many more "missions"! There's not enough to do. I am currently exploring the full extent of each line. There doesn't seem to be enough challenges to chose from when. I hope I get the opportunity to pull into sidings to let other trains pass etc. I also wish there were other trains when exploring.
6) I remain confused about speed limits. I see the signs along the track but many times they don't agree with what the F4 track monitor is saying and why, for instance, does the track monitor say 60 mph and I go flying off the tracks when gonig 60? I am stumped on that one!
7) The horn needs to react more quickly. There is a very annoying time delay built in. I am usually pass the crossing by the time I get all of my horn blasts in!
8) The view from the cab often stutters...even when the framerate is over 30. You move forward smoothly for a second or two, and then a stutter step, and then away we go. Very, very, annoying. I have a 1 gig Athalon, 250 MB memory, and a 64 MB NVida Ultra card. I prefer to run at 16600X1200X32 but lately I have backed off to 1074X768X32 which helps some with the stutter but the frame rate is not much better. I have read on this message board that turning of the switch aid (F8) helps and maybe it does.
9) The sim is great! My comments are not meant to detract from the fine job the programers have done! I have had only one crash in many hours of play and only once did I have the catenary magically disappear! Keep up the good work!

"RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" I'd, like everybody else, like to see a much more user friendly pair of editors with a help system just for it. I'd also like to see a couple more diesel loco skins like CP Rail or Chessie System, ya know? They could call it "Microsoft Train Simulator Expansion Pack"!!!-MATT Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-17-01, 01:45 AM (EST) 46. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Here are a few things I thought of for the wish list ( don't think I saw any on other posts.)1)Flange squeel (when the cars are going aound corners in the canyons)2)that the "moving car" noise would shut off when the train is stopped 3)real looking & locking couplers4)like others, have said, w/ MUed locos, the ability to get into the other end's cab and control the train from there., could have some tab that says "switch control to another engine?", or just being able to look out the window, side or back would help...5) w/ the "Broken Coupler" errors-where the train splits apart- shouldn't that cause some sort of emergency situation?, like dumping all the air.6)a more user freindly way of setting up engine consists (I saw that someone has someting almost ready for randomizing cars-- looks plain, easy, good) , but w/ engines could you have some sort of "engine house" screen that shows all of the engines you posess on your drive, then you go down the line and say, I want 2 BNSF-2's, a chessy GP, and a UP-9, by marking off tabs next to the engines (although this sounds similar to the Activity editor, I'm thinking more of a window shopping approach in the sim itself and not in the other application)7) is there an internet "scoreboard" where people can post/boast about their accomplishments, in an organized manner...such as me taking 2AMTRAK Gennisesese (sp??) w/ 20 superliners
from WHITEFISH to SHELBY from 8:15AM to 12:22PM w/ 2min full stops at BELTON,GLACIERPARK,BROWNING,and CUTBANK, and only having 5 derailments, and the cars uncouple twice 8)some kind of "Power rating", so when you slap together 10 Engines it says "you have XXXX pulling power", or when you string up 500+ coal cars it says "you will need YYYY pulling/breaking power, in order to get it over the hill, and don't think of putting all that power on one end or your going to rip a knuckle by just putting the engines into idel" (or does the game already have this and I'm not looking hard enough??) --- or I could sit down and actually do the math---9) a printable track map (I dont feel like sketching it, or using screen shots) something that looks like a train dispatcher boardI don't have any need for it, but others might... Cricket Poisonthat should be it---- for now

Jun-17-01, 01:54 AM (EST) 47. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" LAST EDITED ON Jun-17-01 AT 02:09 AM (EST)saw a show one night on PBS on a route in mexico that goes through a canyon simuler to the grand canyon it would be cool to see this in the sim.It took the mexican government 10 yrs to finish but it is so nice to see; not sure of the name maybe someone knows this? I think the route you refer to is The Copper Canyon Railroad from Los Mochis, Sinola to Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. I traveled the route from Los Mochis to the town of Creel (8000 ft el.). Scenery supreme and lots of tunnels. Great ideaIts the Copper Canyon. It was part of a RR called the Kansas City Mexico and Orient that was started in the early 1900s. It was to run from KC to Baha Calif which is closer to the orient than LA or San Fran. They never made it through the canyon. In 1927 the Santa Fe bought it. Later the Mexican goverment liberated the Mexican part fom the Santa Fe. The Mexicans finally got through the canyon and built the route all the way to Baha in 1961.I would have to agree that this would be a great route. I think it has to be the Copper Canyon line and it is awesome, i have riden on it twice and hope someone does this.P.S. I hope they fix the problems w/ this one or I will not buy the next one! I mean, if you're sitting in á cab I want to see some people sitting there!!! Or if you're at a station, the least is that the doors don't open or close... How do the "imaginary" get out of the train???Now this is a big one, but how about a magnetic rail??? In China they build the "Transrapid", which can go up to 512 km/h !!!! Well, how about a REAL fast Locomotive like the "TGV" in France or the "ICE 3" in Germany??? But what's realyy important is:
An ingame map!!!! if I start at point A to D, I cross point B and C, but if I start at point B to C, I'm not on the same rail as from A to B...But supergame anyway Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-18-01, 09:07 PM (EST) 58. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" My congratulations also for a terrific game. Looks like most of the replies have to do with rolling stock or track requests. However there are a couple of game play issues I would like to see addressed. I gave up on reading all the comments in this section so I hope I'm not duplicating too badly what somebody else said, but here goes:
--How about being able to print out the work order. I'm getting writer's cramp with some of the assignments.
--Better viewing of siding names and car numbers. No matter what resolution I use they get so jumbled up I can't read them.
--Displaying the track names on the yard view just like the car names are listed. It's quite difficult to keep track of where you are(see the preceding comment). A map would be a good alternative here.See? That's not so bad. I really do like the game. Runs fine on my PIII, 866Mhz, 128 MB RAM, 32MB video RAM machine. Kudos to Microsoft and the developers.Dave Zamzow Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-19-01, 03:34 PM (EST) 63. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" The neat part of this simulation for me is the miniaturization of things - just like the HO or N gauge days.Towards that end, it would be nice if you could zoom "out" further so that you could take in more of the surrounding scenery. This would help a lot in navigating the railyards as well. As it is it seems I'm always "bumping" up against the limits of the top of the monitor straining to see whats over that next hill!In addition, to animate some of the trackside objects - cranes, construction sites, or other objects in the railyards would be great. Operating features on the train itself (coal cars etc.) or aligning the cars to trigger such an action (like the old log-dumping car of my youth) would add interest to the game as well. Some additional scenarios including dumping/loading cars with coal for deliver to a powerplant, iron ore on docked ships along Superior's north shore, or loading or unloading shipping containers on the docks would be neat too! Any was to get the train interacting with the surrounding environment would add a lot to the game. Finally, how 'bout an in game map which will have the route which you have travelled hi-lited - and the ability to start at any point and end at any other point of the route.(Sorry if these items may have been addressed in previous posts - but there's just too many to read thru!)Good job Microsoft. Maybe show the next three switch alignments. It would give a a better "heads-up" as to whats ahead.

Jun-19-01, 04:42 PM (EST) 65. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" In some respects I think Microsoft missed the boat on how this product would be used. I think more research should have been done with train modelers to see why they enjoy the hobby and what they get out of the hobby.
1. Things like loyalty to ones railroad, like me with the IC, would have hinted to them that being able to repaint easily is a must.
2. That operating sessions are important and give some added realism and that with MSTS we don't have to use fast clocks to represent mileage so multiplayer is important. So if Microsoft is reading this and wants someone to ask questions to, email or call me. I for one will not get enough of this program.David Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

They don't look terribly much like strobes when you add them in the .eng file, as well as being apparently glitchy.9.)Better, well organized help for the editors that doesn't have all sorts of holes in the information. 10.)Make the graphics more customizeable than they are now, so that we can tweak our balance of performance and graphical detail exactly how we want it.11.)Make the human figures more recognizeable as...well, umm...PEOPLE!12.)Keep the deer; they're neat.13.)Include blank textures for painters.14.)What's with the overlapping model parts?15.)In case I forgot to mention this, I want a cab-car, or alternate rear helper locomotive control view so that engineers can drive to the end of the line, and then reverse back without having to use the external views to see where they are going. Jun-19-01, 07:13 PM (EST) 69. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" MS Flight Sim supports several add-ons for adventure generation, additional traffic and ATC. Wouldn't a future version of MSTS be great if it provided for multiple players on separate PC's all running the same activity (with graphics levels set to equalize systems as much as possible), with one player looking at a program like Train Disptacher 3 and in communication with other players, each driving a train and performing activities at different places on the line, just like the prototype operations. I see this as a real possibility within a short time, given the advances already being made by activity creators and skins artists, plus the apparent interest of some of the add-on people from the flight sim community. If the MSTS customer base is large enough a few months into the release, I expect we will start to see a lot of great add-ons, but the multi-player scenario above may take a while longer. Personally, I'd like to see some of the top activity creators put their heads together with Tom Levine at Signal Computer Consultants and get cracking on a multi-player version with realistic dispatching. This would really one-up the realism limitations on model RRing operations Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-24-01, 11:29 PM (EST) 86. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" A great feature that's employed on pro simulators (i.e. Illinois Institute of Technology) is a real-time graphic representation of draft and buff forces within the train. This helps give the student force feedback that isn't otherwise possible with a non-motion simulator. At the very least, it would be nice to have a dialogue box appear if (and precisely when) you exceed certain values. The basic desire is for more real-time feedback.Flight simulator has very interesting graphs for flight and landing analyses. Something similar for MSTS would be welcome. Again, the emphasis is on REAL-TIME feedback. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

In contrast, MSTS requires the more cumbersome process of designing and scripting an activity.Don't misunderstand; the activity editor is terrific, but it would be far nicer to sit down with MSTS and be spontaneous about what consist you want to drive, where you want to start from, what traffic you encounter, what cars you want to pick-up, etc. Give us an ability to make it up as we go along. Jun-25-01, 01:48 AM (EST) 89. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" No complete world requests? rats. Real wish list:

!. Longer routes or more complete routes at least (A complete CNW would be nice)
2. More drivable engine variety.
3. The option to turn on some realistic AI traffic in Explore mode, as well as a scattering of spotted cars on sidings to be optional as well. True, I can do the same thing with the activity editor, but I think that these options would spice up Explore route for times when an activity is not what I'm in the mood for. Same old "just do whatever" driving with a touch more interaction possibilities is what I'm getting at..
4. A more exspansive rolling stock selection. Even the "almighty" BNSF (CNW man myself, used to have to share a crossing with the BN. They think signals are for everyone else I think) handles more than just its own cars. The homeroad consists that exsist currently just don't sit well with me. A variety of types and roads would go well with a growing collection of third party add-ons.
5. HEAD OUT THE WINDOW, AND TOWARDS THE BACK VIEWS! Just like you did with the steamers. It would make the operations a bit more realistic. A big help in switching situations.
6. The abillity to assign engine numbers to individual engines, simular to the abillity to assign tail numbers in Flight Sim 2000, only the program would have to recognize different engines of the same type as being sepperate units. I get annoyed with the repetition of numbers on cars and engines, although I do understand the complexity that would be invovled with this particular wish.
7. Progressive weathering of engines and rolling stock over time, and washing stations for when you get tired of the grime. Effects would be cumulative from activity to activity. No mysteriously "repainted" engines appearing just because I loaded up a new activity.
8. Backwards compatibility. Same as the FS series.
9. More "railfan" camara views. Specifically, A possitionable outside view that doesn't reset everytime the targeted car passes by. Sometimes you just want to watch a mixed freight approach from afar and dissapear into the distance. In short, MSTS is already a wonderful product. Mostly I want to see the same kind of "tweaking" that Flight Simulator as become known for. Realism is the key here, along with flexibility and user adaptibility. I'm sure I'll think of more, but for now....

The current, .WAV file approach, does not give the proper matching of the chuffs to driver rotation nor response to control settings and drawbar loading. The whistle sounds are also a dissapointment. There should be 4 chuffs per revolution with there duration and tonal quality determined by the cut-off (reverser) setting.Fred Rea Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-25-01, 03:37 PM (EST) 92. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Here's a few more items:1. Lighting system improvements: Separate thread to follow since these really need to be in the patch.2. Better control of the alerter so that a) the alerter only activates when the train is in motion, b) so that motion of the control of the dash9 in dymanic brakeing will be seen by the alerter.3. The ability to print out a) work orders, b) employee timetables, c) track bulletins, d) condensed profiles.4. Train statistics a) length, b) weight, c) total axles, d) tons per operative brake.5. A "Mary" in the cab to give the EOT ("Fred") information.6. A distance counter (part of Mary in the real world, could be separate) so that with knowing the length of the train, it would be possible to reset the counter at a location to know when the end of the train passes that location.7. The ability to hear the alerter from outside, particularily the head out the window views.More later. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

2-Early era Diesels, 3-easier to use editors, 4-more american passenger trains, 5-Random AI trains, 6-Better way to repaint the locos and stock that are in it, and some others that I can't think of now. All in all, it is one of the best simulators on the market.REAL PLANES SPIN PROPS AND DRIP OIL

Jun-26-01, 03:58 AM (EST) 94. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" 1. 3rd rail track
2. 4th rail track (for the London Underground)
3. All the images and information necessary to modify/create our own track, in particular custom switches, crossovers, double slips & single slips.
4. AI trains which remain in place after their programmed activity has finished. It is not very realistic following a train into a station and seeing it vanish.
5. The ability to enter real timetable information, including wait times at stations or other points into both the user and AI train information.
6. Manual termination at the end of an activity. This would allow the user eg to view activities that have been programmed after the user activity has been completed, or that have been delayed because of the user being late.
7. The ability to re-use an AI train, eg an AI train starts at A, goes to B, waits for a specified period and then either returns to A or goes on to a third destination C.
8. The ability to program AI trains to wait at a station for the user train to arrive, thus allowing simulation of interchange activities, possibly with the option that if the user is too late, the AI train gives up and proceeds anyway.
9. UK 3 and 4 aspect signals.
10. Siding/shunting/repeater signals.
11. It has been said many time before but, the ability to import elevation data.
12. The ability to import DOQ type data.
13. A cad based route editor.
14. Built in functions in the route editor to calculate, horizontal curves, vertical curves and transition curves.
15. Superelevation/cant on curves.Mike

Jun-26-01, 04:18 PM (EST) 95. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" LAST EDITED ON Jun-26-01 AT 04:28 PM (EST)1) I would like to see an option for making the vintage steam engine brakes to not be automatic self-lapping, i.e. more like they were in bygone days, non boring brakes! The brake handle thus having only 4 positions release, apply, lap and emergency. The only way to set the amount of braking is by watching the brakegauge needles and then when it looks right throw the brake switch from either apply or release to "lap". From that point the pressure should bleed away very slowly forcing you do repeat this procedure several minutes later.
2) A small information window showing the upcoming grade elevations, on the fly scalable for vertical (feet) and horizontal (miles). Trainmaster users know exactly what I mean, now if we could get those two features into the super MSTS sim... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-26-01, 04:35 PM (EST) 96. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Well.. after spending way to much time trying to figure out how this thing works under the covers re: skinning/routes/modelling,
all I really want is good editors, or at least consistency across
models/maps.. Develop a standard mapping for a locomotive/car and stick to it.. Lose the oddball repeating texture mapping (eg, try reskinning one of the container loads and watch the fun - logos flip, and get mapped to the container tops..) Why can't I import DEM's? Make 3d model importing easier, or at least a bit better understood.. Give us the tools and stand back.. There are some very talented folks out there who have tons to contribute.

Make this as customisable as FS is and you will make a lot of folks happy...
thanks

Jun-28-01, 01:32 AM (EST) 102. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" One of the first things I noticed was that there was no EOT information for the rear air pressure and the "moving" info. either. Also, an air flow meter on the brakes would be nice too.A GE sounding transition from power to dynamic on the dash-9 would be nice too. Right now it sounds just like an EMD SD40 or the GP38-2.If I remember correctly, moving the automatic brake handle with the mouse doesn't immediately cause a reduction in brake pressure unless you move it alot. I haven't tried braking with the keyboard yet. Also, you can't cut the automatic brake valve cut out valve in or out or cut the independent valve in or out. These are just a few that I've thought of. There are more. I've also only run the BNSF line in Montana and haven't tried any of the others in the game.I wish it was more realisic with the controls mentioned above, but I think it's neat to see what the track looks like in Montana.(beautiful state and so is Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, etc. I wonder if BNSF or UP is hiring out there?<G>)nightrain Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-28-01, 02:15 AM (EST) 103. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" 1.
More realistic air brakes on the frieght trains. They grab way too quick and the stopping rates are too generous. The air also recharges too quickly. I think the Trainmaster program is better in this respect.Braking system performance should correlated to the outside temperature.(Colder weather = slower braking and release times). This sort of thing could be an advanced feature, after enough experience = next degree of difficulty. 2.
SBU devices with a counter so that you know when your entire train is out of a speed zone. There should also be a Summary option button somewhere wich displays train totals (loads, emties, tonnage and length in feet)3.
A smaller version of the speed limit screen wich should also display every milepost. For possible future advanced features such as slow orders , work blocks etc.4.
More meeting and waiting action, even when in the exploring route mode. Its not unusual to meet a dozen or more trains on the course of a run and go in the hole for at least half of them. 5.
A few more North American routes would be nice.Ones that offer different train handling techniques and/or spectacular scenery.
(CPR mountain regions!)I'll think of more stuff .....

Jun-28-01, 09:40 PM (EST) 106. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" More realistic controls, especially brakes...on diesels, first service position-detent (minimum reduction), linear reduction through full service (23lb. reduction), then suppression. Brakes are too linear, way too fast to respond compared to real world. Key stroke should allow quick on/off (postioning of control). Independent brake should be able to hold train on level track with throttle in run 1.Accelerometer on ICE (integrated cab electronics) screens speedometer (just like real world). Take projected speed from track monitor and place on speedometer with accelerate/decelerate line.P40/P42 locomotive (a simple extrapolation of the dash9) the AMD3 (the other name for same) already exists in AI form, let's set up a real Amtrak train.Better documentation, manual for the editors. Techdocs and the help file only give enough info to be really frustrating.Cab signal alert tone for equipment so equipped (with reset).Train data...length, weight, cars, etc. displayed perhaps in the HUD.Kill the alerter a speeds below 5mph, and set intervals to real world cycles: 0-49 60 seconds, 50-59 48 seconds, 60-71 40 seconds. With all of the great audio stuff, why not add trackside detector messages (especially on Marias Pass route).Add commuter equipment (Chicago East End with Metra F40PHM2's or just F40's, bilevels and control cars for reverse running. Can operate both freight and pax movements all the way out to Galesburg (Amtrak, BNSF, foreign lines) on Mendota Sub, commuter from CUS to ATC on Chicago Sub. Yard to yard Cicero to Eola, etc.

"RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" I wont go on about how I want faster framerates etc, as im sure microsoft will address much of this in a upcoming patch not too far away, much like every other company does..so anyway, onto the WISHES for future versions of trainsim
Electrics: Simple.. blue fast flashing strobe on the pantograph that turns on for about 1.2 seconds whenever the panto is put up or down.. maybe even with ground effect at night so everything will light up blue.. maybe even to go as far as to program it to spark whenever you are about to derail or taking a corner too quick and when switchingALL Locomotives:Ability to "turn" the numbering display in the engine consist program so that we could have the same engine, but numbered differently.. easyly and quicklyViews: im sure its popular and will be overcome in a short time, but FREE trackside view.. ability to move the camera like your walking with it and keep it there untill you decide otherwisePassenger view: No centered view.. but 1-5 pre selected views as well as the centered spin view on the car interior.. so that you COULD select a window seat and enjoy the ride as a passenger.. not a hall blockage Skins: As well as the pre-specified skin of locomotives.. it would be preferable to have 2 skins to each loco..
which would be generic, not belonging to any railway and still looking good.. much like the original FS-95 737 skin"suspension" on trains.. visible in cab view.. somewhat soft so the locomotive rolls when turning corners and going over switches (rolls as in rocking) Signals: Ability to choose the most popular signals for each route, even have a signal editor within the programRAILCARS RAILCARS RAILCARS!!.. more of em.. DMUs especially.. they where largely used everywhere well before electrics came into being.. diesel hydrolic, diesel electric, diesel mechanical.. Maintaince of Way vehicals, with specified activitys included.. being more than just something to drivethe ever so popular "too glossy" effect used on need for speed series cars to good effect applyed to the wheels of locomoives where the wheel touches the track.. Locomotives ( additional ):more "explore" fun vehicals such as a hand car, small railcar,..
something slow to really challenge begainers but at the same time be fun to use.. maybe a simple motorised single unit MOW car.. with a car like motor to get used to before venturing into the world of diesel electrics and thousand ton trains
Intergration:A little Flightsim in Trainsim would be good.. the occasional flight simulator aircraft flying over or as a static model at an airport.. also using the same familiar sounds
MULTIPLAYER!!!!!Im sure I dont need to say whats needed
anyway that concludes my wishlist... I like trainsim dispite its faults as it is now.. a little patching and it'd be perfect.. as good as flightsim 95 was for its time.. we all gotta start somewhere Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Well it runs for a while between freezes and and I tried just driving, cool!- I was thinking my sound panel had the treble off, but no. Could we have full range sounds? The sounds are good but I looked and saw only 11khz samples, that explains it! Just sounds muffled compared to all else on my computer. Surely there must be the originals sampled at higher rates? This is apparent especially in a sim with things hissing etc. - And it really needs finer sound volume tuning.... the voices get drowned out by the engine sound, so had to turn down engines, but at times it still gets buried.- For the tool tip help on controls, why not display what the keyboard commands are too?- The scroll bars on things are non standard, i.e. clicking in the grey area not on the thumb should page down, not do absolute positioning... can it be changed to the standard way?- Maybe I'm too much of a novice, but I expected a pop up map ala flight sim. How would I know from the startup menus where all those locations are, and what direction I'm going? And while driving, how could I see all the switches and track in a complex area? In reality a paper map, but since there aren't any (and this is a computer) I would really expect a moving map.- A manual A manual A manual! Or a coupon for free paper and ink cartridges. Even then, who wants to read and 8 1/2 x 11 stack of paper?Rick

Jul-04-01, 09:36 PM (EST) 128. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Many different wants for the next patch/version of MSTS, but most I've already seen echoed here (better activity editor, fix the broken coupler and loss-of-power-when-pushing bugs, tweak the grades and cargo sensitivites, etc etc) - but there's a couple I haven't seen yet. They're both a bit nitpicky but would do wonders for realism. 1) If there's snow on the ground, there's certainly not going to be any crickets chirping. 2) If it's raining and I go into a tunnel (or under a shed or covered station platform), I shouldn't still hear rain.
That said... for a V.1 of a game, MSTS is still pretty good. The future of "cyberspace railfanning" stretches out before us like a brand new road. I'm pretty excited! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-05-01, 05:49 PM (EST) 130. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" LAST EDITED ON Jul-05-01 AT 05:53 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON Jul-05-01 AT 05:50 PM (EST)1. Joystick control. I HATE using the keyboard to simulate levers on the train. Why shouldn't I be able to use my stick's throttle and Y axis to control the train's throttle and brake?2. People. I find it a little weird to pull up to a deserted station, open the doors (which don't actually open??), and wait for phantom passengers to board the train3. Support for cab cars and switching between locomotives! A lot of modern commuter trains have a car at the tail end of the train with duplicate locomotive controls. We really should have the ability to (virtually, at least) get out of the locomotive and get into the cab car or locomotive that is hooked to the tail end of the train. That way we could do true bi-directional passenger runs.4. Don't just *end* activities because of this or that problem. Let the train continue to run with the problem in place. Missed a red light? So? Let the train go anyway, and if it hits something... well model that, too!5. We need a "passenger comfort" indicator, or a g-force gauge with some kind of mark showing passenger comfort.6. Some better idea of grade. With the way the graphic engine is designed, it's impossible to tell whehter you're level, up, or downhill. Add a gradient indicator.7. MAPS! MAPS! MAPS! MS made the same mistake with Flight Simulator - there are no comprehensive maps that show the entire length of a route, all the switches, with names and detailed yard maps! What's up with that? It'd be cool if I could pull up an in-cab map that shows a particular yard, junction, stop, or just the stuff near me. Also, show the grade along the route in the map, as well.8. Fix the signals so that you can back up past a signal. Right now, it seems like the signals are broken... once you pass one, it turns red, and you can't back up if there's a problem (like in the Bar Car activity with the Scotsman)9. Oh yeah... why don't the diesels have mirrors?? They often do in real life, and it's often important to be able to see behind you!!10. Shouldn't get rained on under cover, such as bridges and tunnels.11. We should be able to find out the tonnage of a train before starting out. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-05-01, 09:05 PM (EST) 131. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" I think you've done a great job with the sim guys! I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far. I have noticed one or two small things though that would make it a little more enjoyable, for me at least.1. I'd like to be able to change engines and/or the number of engines for a particular activity, without having to go the activity editor to do so - much like I can do with "explore a route" - it would be good to choose the activity, then be able to choose which engine(s) I'm going to drive for the activity.2. Someone else mentioned a 2-D "overhead" map showing the train position.3. To be honest, I don't mind throwing switches manually at all - I think with all the little problems involving the automatic ones, you could just get rid of them all together - reading the posts to these boards, I'm gathering a lot of simmers are changing the auto switches to manual ones with their editors as it is.4. Some people - static would be fine - would be a nice addition.5. Like others, I'd really like to see the head-out views available in all engines, not just the steam locomotives (thanks to a couple of the locomotive designers and repainters who have set up the SW1200's with head-out views!)6. Last thing - again just a personal preference - I really like the freight operations - I'd like to see a few more activities that involve some complex freight switching and movement - and last more than 20 minutes (see for example, Rob Easterday and Frank Peterson for their respective Whitefish Locals and Heavy Fuel Train activities)Thanks again guys, and keep up the great work! Jul-06-01, 04:52 PM (EST) 132. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" First off I LOVE THIS PROGRAM (it's been keeping me up at night)A couple of suggestions:1) Make the "Consist Editor" a Main Menu option on the Editor and Tools Menu (rather than "buried" with the Service Editor). Also, would there be a way to identify consists being used by activities and warn you that you are editing a consist currently in use by an activity. This may prevent changes to consists which would "break" an activity (for example, deleting a car that is a part of an Activity Event). I've been "bitten" by this and always select New or Use As Template and change the name. I only us Edit when I'm absolutely sure that the consist I'm editing is used ONLY in the Activity I'm editing.2) Have the ability to change the sequence of the Activity Events listed in the Activity Editor window (i.e select and shuffle up or down). Currently, it's difficult to add an Activity event and have it appear in a specific (sequential) point in the Workorder. I like to set up the Workorder in the sequence that the events should be completed. Whenever you add a new Activity event, it's always placed at the bottom of the list; then appears in the Workorder out of the logical sequence.3) All switches associated with yards should be MANUAL (I'm sure this isn't a new idea); especially at a "Wye", so you can perform turnarounds without complicating the Path editing. Naturally, switches associated with Main Line crossovers should be AI (Path) controlled.Bottom Line, however ... GREAT PRODUCT and I'm sure it will see the same growth (and growing pains) of Fight Simulator. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"Support for Virtual Railways" LAST EDITED ON Jul-07-01 AT 03:18 PM (EST)Let's face it, without Virtual Airlines (aka VA), MS FlightSim would not have as much success as it has had - after the initial newbie greenwing period, FS pilots need a virtual purpose for their flying, which they find in various virtual airlines. The same can be said of MSTS - virtual railways (VR)will a key to its future success. So my wish is for a MSTS plyr_performance.txt output in comma-delimitted format (sort of an engineer's report) to make it easy for VR management to impliment some sort of automated database/spreadsheet (MS, Lotus, etc) in their operations.Charles B. Jul-07-01, 03:32 PM (EST) 135. "A real "Save" game feature" LAST EDITED ON Jul-07-01 AT 03:39 PM (EST)Problem: MSTS needs to be able to save and load game/activity in a user selectable manner as is customary in all Windows apps & games - even MSFS has this feature.Currently MSTS only will save the current activity in progress -1)Thus if I was working on a new route, testing it, etc, I cannot just run and save an activity from another session without overwriting;2)MSTS is run on a home PC, not in the office. This means that others in the household will use the same PC, thus more than one person will likely play MSTS in separate sessions. If anyone saves an activity in progress, it will overwrite prior saves of another family member. The result is that only one member of a household can run MSTS on the home PC.Charles B. Jul-07-01, 07:46 PM (EST) 139. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" I've only had it a couple of days but i'm hooked, first up, top notch job to all involved and my greatest admiration for a job well done. These are suggestions and desires, by no means am I saying the product is poor, it's the best thing on my Hard drive right now Multiplayer:
It'd be great but i've had a hard time thinking about what you'd do that would make it worth while. Generally trains shouldn't be too close together and only really that should happen in the stations - unless there are a couple of people shunting for example. A tricky one but if done right it could rock the house
Perhaps like ATC in Flight sims, we have a bunch of Signalmen - like Satco/IVAO in Flight sims we have an equivalent online world in which we can all drive trains and if we see each other great, if not, we're here to drive trains anyway and there's plenty of interaction with the signalmen anyway.Gradient Window:
Much like the Track monitor is an overhead view, a Gradient display would complete the 'picture'. In the virtual world I can't see what's affecting my train, just that suddenly its started to slow down. If I could have seen on a side-on gradient window that there was a hill coming up then I could have prepared for it much better.Tolerance Guage:
Someone else has already mentioned a tolerance guage, just a percentage bar perhaps, if it gets to a certain amount then you get one of those bloody marks on your report ;) But atleast you would have a much better idea of what you were doing that caused it.Visual/Audible warning:
Whenever you DO do something wrong (speed limit, tolerances etc) instead of just noting it, optionally say something too - speed limits you should be aware of but certainly some of the others aren't quite so obvious and having to keep checking up on the report to see what your ride is like gets to be a pain Derailment:
More information, if possible, about why it happened. Were you going too fast? Not sure what can be done here, but on one of the activities I just keep getting told i've derailed, yet i'm well under the speed limit. No clue.ETA:
Given your present speed plus braking time, what is the comfortable ETA to the next platform. You can use this to compare against your scheduled time so that you know whether to speed up or slow down to bring them closer together.Recommended Speeds:
If the speed limits are too high because of the track formation then perhaps a guide to speed limits (maybe as a post-it note type display). The idea being that when you were trained on the route your mentor would have given you pointers and guidelines about what they find works best. Optional ofcourse.Joysticks:
Someone else has mentioned this one also, Joystick support. With this supported i'd be able to build a little device with a few analog POT's on it to FAR better control these trains - much like I don't use a mouse or keyboard to fly planes in FS2K. It's quite usable as it is, but this would open the door for custom control devices.Printouts:
Another one someone else has mentioned that I agree with, printing out your duty roster, saves having to keep refer to it or write it down each time.Show car/siding names:
It's there but if you're somewhere big like whitefish it might as well not be, it's just a blur. Perhaps it can look at your current activity and guestimate which ones are more important and only display those (optionally). Also, a drop down box could allow the user to specify which things they are trying to find and they can be clearly highlighted.Multiple Locos:
The ability to have multiple drivable loco's. MU's are a good example, so you can switch from one end to the other, but also more complex activities where you build up the consist at the yard using a shunter, switch to your haulage units and drive the load to its destination and then perhaps use a shunter at the other end to sort it all out. Granted, in the 'real world' you dont do everything yourself, but this is a sim, we can either have lots of activities with different bits, or you could easily have one big one when at the end you really feel like you've accomplished something major
Or, an activity where YOUR train brakes down so you switch to another loco elsewhere to come and pull you out of the caca.Other Trains/Routes etc:
While it'd be nice to see a number of new bits added with each release, Flight Sim hasn't really focused on adding more aircraft with each release, opting instead to leave new units to the community (who do a fantastic job). If the tools could be made simpler that would be great and much more worth it - don't do all the cookies yourself, just make damn good cutters and let us do all the cookies, as a community we have more time and resource to do all the variety we want provided we have the tools to make it a realistic job.I would say this, don't focus on the US, you've done a great job thinking of a wider picture in this first release (though I still am not sure why we have the Scotsman doing the Settle/Carlisle route when that is LMS country not LNER (or for that matter GWR *points at Pendennis Castle that appears on the Royal Scot Rescue *). But that's nitpicking I'm REALLY looking forward to a lot of UK stock appearing, if I could afford 3D Studio then i'd have a stab at doing some myself but alas, it's just a /tad/ bit outside my price range .I'll stick to repaints Matt.

Jul-08-01, 02:36 PM (EST) 142. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" I know from reading these posts that most of the users of MSTS are train fans and/or gamers who really want the most accurate sim possible, because they really just want to drive a train. But I really think there are more people like me who sometimes just want to sit back and ride the train. This is a beautiful software creation! I've been riding the lengths of some of the ITR's, just looking around, and this creation is stunning! Just came down the mountains into Innsbruck last night! Please give us the chance to create our own rides; think of them as interactive movies. Where you could set up all the conditions, time of day, season, weather, where the train starts, the route it takes, the stops, maybe weather changes, maybe the sun sets and the lights come on. And then just sit back and ride, as if you were a passenger. Or look around using all the views, watching different things as you went by. Maybe even the chance to get out at a station stop and stretch your legs. I think this would be an incredible addition to this sim.Mind you, I do enjoy driving the train, too, although even with the simple controls it takes a lot of work. But sometimes I just like to ride in this really beautiful creation. And I'm sure lots of other folks would go for this too. Thanks for listening.

Jul-08-01, 06:42 PM (EST) 146. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" I believe that multiplayer/internet play capabilities added to MSTS would allow for an exciting operating session over the net. Of course some other modifications would need to be made. The lines could be signaled or dark, as long as the signaled lines were ABS (automatic block signal) and not CTC (Centralized Traffic Control). A more modern alternative would be an ABS line with Track Warrant Control, in which there would be a dispatcher(s) issuing track warrants over an internet radio like Roger Wilco to a virtual operating department of engineers and conductors. For TT&TO ops, imagine a dispatcher(s) issuing train orders via Roger Wilco to operators at various stations who in turn set train order signals and deliver orders to engineer and conductor. Can all of this be done without dropping frame rates to zero? I don't know. How about tower operators??Another thing, then I'll shut up, why not have a multiplayer capability in which one person operates the locomotive and another person(s) works the ground--throwing switches, operating cut levers, etc. All the while he is talking with his engineer over the net radio (Roger Wilco). I bet you're saying that a radio is not appropriate for 1928 steam era ops, and you're right, but I don't know how hand signals or lantern signals could be displayed over the internet and in the sim. Maybe it can be done too! Now that would be, as my students say, awwwwwwsummmmm!I say here's the highball to big plans for future releases, upgrades, and add-ons!!!!!! Jul-10-01, 11:22 PM (EST) 149. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" This program does not need a patch. What it needs is a complete rewrite of everything.
1.Memory. The way the editor uses memory is the single biggest thing wrong with it. Those of you who are working on your own routes, try this - open up your route, make some modifications, save it, then open up Marias Pass without exiting the editor. Click on one of the mainline switches so that you get the message that tells you it has to delete all the associated signals before you can edit this switch. Select yes to delete the signals, then exit the route without saving. Open up your route again, make one or two changes, then try to save your route. ERROR! you cannot save until all these unconnected signals are deleted! WHAT signals? I didn't HAVE any signals on my route! This explains all the lockups and crashes, this P.O.S. doesn't clear anything from memory! The thumbnail sketches are a joke, so when you need to select a bridge you have to place each one on the list to see what it looks like ( and all the viaducts look the same) and just placing and deleting bridges will eat up memory and cause crashes, lockups, and "failed to load" errors. One guy came up with a combined reference file for objects(thanks, I needed that), but just try to set up sound regions. One choice. Default. And why the hell we gotta go thru all these gyrations anyway? Is there any earthly reason why each and every route has to have its own subdirectories for shapes, textures, terrain textures, and sounds? These idiots figured out how to have all the routes use a common path to the same directory for the engines and consists, why couldn't they have done the same for the graphics? Cluttered hard disks, if the guys who made the add ons for doom and quake programmed the way these clowns did, every new level would have to have ALL of the game files in it! Then there's the game itself - I have an 800mhz AMD Thunderbird with 128mb ram, and a Creative Annihilator2 64mb AGP, Western Digital 30 gig IDE100, and whenever there is any AI traffic in the game it gets jerky. Tearing textures and melting terrain that I've never seen on any other game with this video card. I'm not even going to list all the other problems, as they have been well documented on this forum by many others. These morons need to send the whole bundle over to ID software so that some people who know how to code can redo the whole mess. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-12-01, 00:02 AM (EST) 154. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" My wishes for future versions of MSTS. Freight activities in Europe. Even though I am an American I still enjoy operating on the Settle & Carlisle and Innsbruck to St. Anton routes. Judging from what I have seen on this sight and others, if the editing tools are made a little bit more user friendly, the train simmers will be able to take care of themselves. Also I would like to see multi player support. Essentially there are three types of railroad games operations such as MSTS, dispatching such as Train Dispatcher, and management such as Railroad Tycoon. Combine the elements of all three together so that those running the Virtual Railways can compete with each other for territory and business, complete with the stock market modeling with an online stock market perhaps this could be a seperate add-on Microsoft Railroad Manager. The virtual CEO would have to manage his resources for equipment acquisition, operating costs, and compete with other virtual railroaders for business that can be automatically generated online. They can manage the business side of it while an online dispatcher could control the traffic patterns and the lowly peons could drive the trains. We need this to make up for the lack of "seat of the pants" feel.On the F8 switch window, show milage to the next/previous switch.Do not end the activity for:
Broken coupler
Passing red signal (we have to do this sometimes to break a stalemate)
Derailed cars other than the engine itself (and certainly NOT when other trains derail)

Jul-15-01, 05:07 PM (EST) 158. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" More freight opperations. I dont like passenger ops. I think they are boring as all hex. Start here, stop there, start again... I need the feeling of accomplishment of bringing a 100 car unit coal train down the hill, or trying to get a 50-60 car freight up a 4% grade with vintage steam power.I would like to see the D&RG from Almosa to Silverton. IN NARROW GUAGE, WITH THE APPROIATE C AND K SERIES ENGINES AND EQUIPMENT. Okay this is more like expansion pack kind of stuff and not main stream next release stuff. And Im with all the people that say there needs to be a way to switch cabs, and look out the back of the cabs. Also I know these are fixes but the train coupled to the front power problems need to be resolved, and coupling need to be fixed/improoved.Also I would like a model RR mode where the equipment dosent respond with the realistic breaking accel, but acts like a model. One last think, the ability to have spontanious problmes devlope. Like a break down or some other kind of failure (to be determined by a setting in the .eng/.wag file, or in the activity, allowing for the what should have been enough power to end up not being. Along with this the ability to set engines to not have something available, like no dynamic breaks. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-17-01, 07:26 PM (EST) 167. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" The missing "bouncing and banking"-effect is really a big lack in Train Simulator (in the cabview and also from outside).
I was very disappointed because this effect gives the player in a game like BVE much more the feeling of riding a realistic train (there even a different track width gives the trains a different "bouncing-behaviour").
Trains in Train Simulator seem to me like static objects.
Im also missing a different sound when using the brakes.
But foreseen of these the Train Simulator graphics are really impressive.

Save for the traffic and a few deer here and there, it seems that the world this train sim operates in is the result of mass destruction by a neutron bomb. I don't see anyone at the train yards, stations, cities. If I am going to pickup and deliver some cargo I want to see bodies working. It just seems so lifeless!!P.S. The editors are too cumbersome. Ok for a 1.0 version, but they need some major refinements for the mass market. Topographic data for any route should be readily available for import into any map or activity.

I should be able to open an existing activity, or create a new one, and adjust every aspect of it prior to driving the train. Jul-17-01, 00:23 AM (EST) 166. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Having read through most of the posts, I've got a couple of new ones and some where I'm adding my vote:Autosave. An option to cause TS to automatically save a run every X minutes or miles or phases of the moon. This would be especially useful when running an entire route for debugging.FRED monitor in the cab.Track monitor. Currently this shows open switches with an orange arrow. How about showing closed switches with a horizontal orange line. Also, show all switches that exist within the scope of the Track Monitor (I believe it is 3 miles), not just the next one. Also, add some sort of scale. Could be grey horizontal lines every mile or half mile...whatever looks usable, perhaps intermediate gradiants along one side.In message panels (at least the standard, often used ones) allow a keyboard shortcut for the choices. "Y" works for yes on some and I assume "N" does too, but the others don't appear to have this facility ("X" for exit, etc.)A resetable footage counter in the cab, used to tell how far you have gone and when the rear of the train has passed a certain point.Switch targets. Put some sort of target on the switch stands, especially the manually thrown ones.Place/track names. Some way to float these names along the track. When working in a yard, it would be useful to have the name float over each track so you know where you are. Similar suggestions have already been mentioned. Alternative would be to place name near the switch.Talking detectors, as already mentioned. Some things I don't want to see implemented: Anything that isn't prototype. This is a simulation, not a chance to design the railroad the way you might do it today if RRs hadn't been around for 100+ years. There's a reason why they work the way they do, including signals, brakes, etc.Bob Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-17-01, 10:24 PM (EST) 168. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" The simulation is terrific. Some improvements I would like to see:
A better way to differentiate tracks in the yard. Present method too cumbersome.
View 3 shows the end of a train UNLESS you have added some cars. Need view 3 to see end of the train when working the yard, but after you have coupled on some cars you can't.
With the great add-ons it would be nice to see them. View 4 shows a run by but not the whole train. I would like to have a view option that will let me see all the cars in a consist.
The manual shows the routes in plan and elevation that indicate some stops, but these do not correspond to the mileposts or some of the activites in the simulation. Would like to know where I am.
Somehow there should be a way to show gradient to enhance train control. Also, more realistic train response is necessary. The weak dynamic breaks of the Dash 9's are a train wreck waitng to happen. Thanks for the great simulation!

Jul-18-01, 11:21 AM (EST) 171. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" aflyer,In View 3, you can pan to the side of the car that was your last car before you coupled. Then, press Ctrl-Rightarrow or Ctrl-Leftarrow to move one car forward or backward. If you Ctrl-arrow to your new last car, View 3 is now restored as it was before you increased the size of your train. A little cumbersome after you've picked up a long cut of cars, but at least it's a work-around until MS fixes View 3 to automatically reset to the last car whenever we pick up and drop off. Jul-27-01, 04:09 PM (EST) 191. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Thought of a couple more:Usability: Each time you start the game, or come back to anything where you had a choice to make, the simulator shows a default first choice. The vast majority of the time I want to go back to the same place I was last time. This is especially true in the development tools. They should go back to the same long/lat as when the game was last saved, not back to the default location. If I was selecting track objects in the route editor, then the next time I want another object, default to Track Objects, not back to whatever is at the top of the list. If I selected Marias Pass the last time I started the Sim, let Marias Pass be autoselected the next time. Regarding my earlier comments about the track monitor...I've since learned a few things about how it works and would change what I wrote. I'd still like to see potential upcoming switches that are in normal position. If more than one signal is within the view of the TM, show it. When a mile post has been passed, have its value disapear from the TM then, not a quarter mile later! As for siding names, I've learned a few things about them too. Separate the ability create a siding object from the placement of the name. The siding object's length appears to determine how big the light blue rectangle is on the TM. That's useful as it tells you how much more room you have in the siding. But I want to have the name of the siding appear at the switch to it, not in the middle of the siding object's length. In fact, on sidings that go around corners, the name may appear off in the weeds because the object draws a straight line between the start and end points and the middle may be off the track. A lot of diesel loco downloads come with a headout view so you could see where you are going without having to switch cabs.
You can create a consist with two locos one of which is attached by the short hood and every thing works fine (so is the second loco just just along there for the ride}. If you create a consist with both locos running long hood forward, guess what you have drag the train to move it. This to me is the most serious glitch in the sim. Jul-18-01, 10:40 AM (EST) 170. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Well..
I'm sure these have been mentioned before, but now that I've
been playing with this for a while, I'd like to add the following.
- Make pusher units work properly. This would make switching more realistic (right now, you can't push even a small consist
properly. Run 8 in a Dash-9 to push 5 cars is not realistic)
- Make sure that when running multiple locos, especially in distributed power mode that the all slave up to the master locomotive. I suspect that if I drop a locomotive midway back
in a 100 car grain drag, that it doesn't contribute fully in power or braking.
- Give us EOT/SBU monitor capability.. I'd love to know when the brakes have released on the tail end of that same 100 car grain drag.
- I'd like to be able to run lead units either long or short hood forward and get the correct cab view this would simplify run-arounds and switching.
- The game seems to be more a simulation of running point-to-point, give me more yard switching activities. A mixed freight with lots of pickups and setouts is more challenging.
- Better editors - nuff said!
- Better documentation of the config (.eng/.wag files) while the techdocs are pretty good as is, I'd like to know where the
exact centre co-ordinate is for each loco, for example.. That way I could duplicate the lighting on CP's Holiday Train.
More info on file formats would help too..
- Make the UV mapping scheme consistent across models, and correct the oddball mapping anomalies. This would make after-the-fact skinning much more easily accomplished.
- Give us a better 3d model converter, and a makeace that does compression.
- DEM import - (just re-inforcing better editors<G>
- The ability to switch between cab and interior views (if running a consist with multiple locos or cars with interiors.
- Again - on editors.. I'd love a better cab view editor..That would allow me to take a mesh of a truck (as in Crew-cab or 2 ton) and make driveable Hi-Rail MOFW equipment

Thats about it for now..
cheers

Rolling down the track, head light on on front of lead unit, number board/markers/walkway lights on at rear of lead and both ends of other units, fred on at rear of last car. Arriving at Columbia Falls yard, the units cut off and run around the train (now it would be real nice to be able to change cabs), when uncoupled, head light at west end of rear unit (cab end) comes on dim. When pulled clear and reversing headlight on easd end of east unit goes to dim, head light on west end of west unit goes to bright. Switching is completed and locomotives couple to west end of train and head down the branch to Kalispell with fred on at east end of last car.As it is now, fred would only appear on the west end of the last car of the train, not useful for a westbound train, and none of the headlight switching would be possible. There also needs to be boolian logic permitted in the conditions section. Jul-21-01, 01:05 PM (EST) 184. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Here are my votes ("WISHES") for the future of Train Simulator:1. ENGINE CREATION:
I am willing to spend a lot of time creating highly detailed engines, once there is an economical method for doing so. I am especially interested in creating US engines, diesel, electric, and steam. Primarily those in use during the mid twentieth century.2. MULTIPLAYER:
Link up with an existing (or new) dispatcher program would be great. It would also be good to have multple engineers running different trains, or an engineer and fireman running steam.3. NAMED ACTIVITY SAVES:
Would like to save some activities as start-up situations, where I may have made changes to the default starting setup. This might occur where I enter an explore mode, but want to position the train more accurately at a station platform.4. NEW ROUTES:
Would like to see more routes developed by Microsoft/Kuju. Possibly extending some of the existing routes. For example, how about extending the Marias route, right through to Washington, and maybe right to the Microsoft campus! Would also like the Northeast to extend through NY City, right up to Boston...
Greate game, so far. Lets make sure there are future versions 2, 3, etc.Joe

Rather than only be able to set the start "time" for an AI train. Using the time may work OK on passenger activities (that are tied very closely to a schedule). But, it's very difficult to co-ordinate AI activity during freight (switching) operations.Anyway, I think this could help with a lot of the signal and timing problems activity-developers are encountering.I would like to say, "my hat's off" to you guys for developing a great train sim. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" I'd just like to see two US "modern" freight steam locos, a switcher and a long haul (doesn't have to be articulated, though that would be nice). Cyrus Lum at Train Artisan has a great passenger steam loco, and plans on doing more of this genre, so waht's really missing is 1940s-1950s steam freight locos(no vintage tea kettles - please)! Thanks for considering this requiest,
/j
PS, don't know how hard it would be to model this, but a turntable and roundhouse would be great!! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-01-01, 01:38 PM (EST) 200. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Ok so i said this in the main post, but then i read them, and reaised i should have put it here...I've also sent it to that E-Mail address on the microsoft 'Games' website.
I was just wondering, after buying the game and having a look around at the already thriving community, if it would be possible to expand the game's posibilities. Yes i know it's only been released over here in the UK less than 2 weeks (i think) but already there are millions of people getting on with creating their own Wagons, engines, and accessories, however, although there is the feature for creating ever type of locomotive imaginable, there is no feature for non-normal vehicles. As i was saying, i was thinking about what I would love this fantastic game to do.. and it hit me... suspended locomotives, Monorails, cable cars. Not every vehicle that is classed as a 'locomotive' runs on normal 'Railroad' (as you call them) tracks. Maglevs hover along magnetic strips, Monorails hang from supports and cable cars dangle over beautiful revenes on a cable... I was just wondering if there was any posibility for Microsoft Train Simulator to support these diversions from the normal. Ok so i was expecting a little to much with 'Cable cars' as you can't actually control them, but you get the idea with monorails etc. Oh.. anohter example - Thames Light Railway. Completely automatic i know, but a driver is in there for emergences, so an activity could be that the computer system goes wrong and you have to control the rest of the trip...It would expand the game beyond what is expected of it, and add a new level to the posibilities that are accessable for 3rd party interactivity. With this you would not only have to control just the one vehicle on one single train route, but a mini-metropolis of transportation within one route, a city for example. Just imagine... the city streets humming with the sound of AI controlled trams moving gracefully through the traffic, up ahead the high-speed intercity express rushing past the level crossing on it's way round the city to the next desination and to the left, the regional central station, heavy goods class47's moving slowly around the goods area, and the local DMU's gliding swiftly through the platorms halting at the red light before following the intercity accross the river and out of sight. All seen from up above, dangling in mid air on board the city monorail shuttle where you're sitting comfortably looking out of the window on the busy world around.I know this seems a little more like a dreamy wonderland, or a whole new title, however I'm sure if you really wanted to do it you could find away. I mean, it's not as if we want to be able to change from train to train, i mean if you're tired of the morning trip to Euston on the underground, just hop over to the 12:10 HST just leaving Kings cross... although that would be even better.. i assume there are limitations to the existing software.Well.. that's my imagination, what I think the game could be like, busy, interesting, and facinating. At the moment, yes the game is fun, but come on.. i'm not an anorack, and frankly sitting infront of my computer for 2 hours straight constantly changing the speed along a relatively straight, and lifeless 'Northern Corridor' isn't really my cup of tea... and although the City service in that Japaniese map is more 'me', it's still a little empty. Come on.. kings cross never has less than 4 trains in it at one time!!!, there's always something to look at.. i'm not one to drive the trains, although it is fun, i just like watching from the same place, thinking about where the trains are going, and just admiring the strength of them in general.. sit me in a box above Waterloo station for a day, watching the Eurostars coming and going and it'd make my year.So there you are.. my er... comments about possible improvements to the game's engine and possibly control.Talk to you later
Cheers

It would produce cows similiar to the way a Car Spawner produces cars, probably from the barn and back, to give animation to the barnyard. You could even expand it into a People Spawner, for you passenger coaches, depots, and general city or rural settings. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-07-01, 04:32 PM (EST) 204. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" A "God's-eye-view for the route editor, e.g. be able to build the route in map form (much like train dispatcher's track builder). You could lay out an entire route (using for instance existing track alignment data from a railroad ). Being able to drop objects in from above, rather than place alongside would ease the building process. Also, user should be able to select (and this is IMPORTANT) English or metric units. Since everything we do in this country (the US) is in English measure measurements, the program should offer that option when building routes, locomotives, cars, etc. Also, once again...let's make the physics of the trains and especially the brake systems a little more real. Brake application on US locomotives should mirror the real world, e.g. min reduction (or first service on older equipment) should be a detent obtained by pressing the appropriate brake application key, then graduated reductions (linear) until the full service (23lb reduction) detent is reached. Release should mirror either passenger or freight parameters (user selectable), that is pressure maintaining linear release for passenger or full release with recharge time for non-pressure maintaining (freight). Equalization pressure in all cases should lead the brake pipe pressure, not mirror it exactly as it does now. In the real world, that's how you determine the brake application: reduce the eq.pressure a given amount and watch the brake pipe reduce as pressure is exhausted. Aug-14-01, 05:42 AM (EST) 217. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Just to confuse matters UK Railways now use the metric system.
So the English railways no longer use "English" measures, although the Americans do...unless you're making an English 'heritage' system, in which case you WOULD need 'English'Confusing, huh?Except that I feel MS do need to keep accomodating BOTH systems if they are to satisfy a world-wide market. Having to re-install twice a week is getting old. The problem is that it is so predictable. I can start the game and all is fine but when I next start it the logos don't play. Once I see that, I know we are going down hill. Within three starts of that first instance, it will go blue screen during the start.Eric Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

For instance, you could place the family dog in the back yard of a house, and by clicking on the dog, you would see a scene of perhaps your own family backyard BBQ,. Or you could place your own .jpg image in a window like the Easter Egg that Dave found in the Japan Route. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-13-01, 02:43 AM (EST) 213. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" My wishes are:
1.) The ability to change the font size and color of the Compass, Siding/Station Names. The present small blue is terrible at 1280x1024. Bright yellow would be GREAT.
2.) Printed maps, or maps that we can print out of all the routes with stations, signals, sidings, etc. clearly labelled.
3.) A map in the program that you can pull-up so you can see where you are and where you are going.
4.) Dispatcher sounds like in the real world of railroading. Not just OK to proceed, etc.
5.) The ability to alias files so we don't have to copy massive files into each route or train folder.
6.) Better editors and better editor documentation.
7.) More routes and activities.
8.) The inclusion of Big Boy and other trains and engines.
9.) Better weather like in Sky Conductor with the ability to change it from within the sim.
10.) The inclusion of something like Train Buddy to check your consists.
11.) Eliminate the moire effects we all see.
12.) The ability to change the consist from within the sim like you can do in Flight Simulator with the planes.
13.) Better camera views other than the default ones like in the mods that have been made by the users.
14.) Workable roundtables.
15.) Head out views on all engines so we don't have to add them ourselves.
16.) People if you want them.
17.) Cows that get on the tracks. NOt just deer.
18.) Better quality trains like the ESE.
19.) Utility trains like snow plows, wreckers, etc.
20.) The ability to make all switches manual or automatic from within the sim.
21.) Update all coupling break values or fix the coupling break problems.
22.) The ability to use the mouse more to turn functions on/off like in Flight Simulator - I hate the keyboard.
23.) The ability to have AI trains when you explore the routes.
24.) Better sim crash detection with useable help on screen as to what has happened and what to do - Not just send the info to MS.
25.) A way to make pictures of crashes from different viewpoints not just stop the sim quickly like it is now.
26.) The ability to make videos of a trip, and play them back, like in Flight Simulator. Thanks, regards, Bob.

Aug-13-01, 05:31 PM (EST) 215. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" My 2 bits:1: The ability to switch sides in a double cab loc, or even to switch locs.2: More variantion in wheather types, like a light drizzle, fog, stormy wheather, etc.. perhaps even cloudlayers in mountain regions to pass thru (rain to fog to sunshine..) or rain that turns to snow as you go higher up.3: Sound that changes in pitch directly related to speed (instead of just a different sample mixed in every 20 mph or so). I think this will greatly enhance the immersion since it will give a direct audible feedback on speed and acceleration.4: Bumping of the train, elevated tracks in corners (especially for those fast bastards..)5: Malfunctions of engines and brakes that degrade the locs performance. Also cars that can develop hot boxes or dragging equipment. A passenger pulling the emergency brake.. And of course the possibility to set a Mean Time Between Failures (and Mean Time To Repair?)for every kind of malfunction6: Hotbox and Dragging equipment detectors along the rail with audible feedback7: A dispatcher function would be nice, especially if the game goes multi-player!8: LAST BUT NOT LEAST: More control for an activity to influence the simulation. So more possibilities to influence the behaviour of the AI-dispatcher, to change the weather on the run, set or clear malfunctions, degrade the performance of AI trains, influence signals, activate parts of a path etc. Of course all of this to make it possible to create far more interesting activities...Frank. Aug-14-01, 11:49 AM (EST) 220. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Thanks for the opportunity for input.
Encouraging (huge?!) enthusiast take up so far & so quickly (on this and other sites) gives real hope that program can begin to grow onwards & upwards (just like FS did).Anyhow, here goes with my 'wish-list' for MSTS 2 - (hope I don't duplicate too many):
'GAME ENGINE'
FULL REVERSE COMPATABILITY: Even after such a short time a respectable library of downloads is developing. I think many of the 'wishes' regarding Stock and Routes will be satisfied through the enthusiast/'add-on' market, especially as we all get more familiar and confident with the Editing suite. The way things are taking off one might probably hope that many bar the most obscure tastes will be catered for by the time v.2 comes out. However, I suggest it will be dead in the water if it means junking all of one's v1.0 layouts.
SENSIBLE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: We can't ALL afford to buy an extre GHz every year or so! Effort should be focused on maximise efficiency rather than just gobble resources (Not always a MS strong-point in the past).'GAME PLAY'
1) Run in a proper window (a la FS)-(so I can hide it quick if the boss comes in!)2) Greater variety of weather conditions (fog, ice etc, and perhaps sliders to set degree (again, a la FS) plus a Randomise option to add interest)(Plus 'Real-Time look-up, as suggested elsewhere).3) A similar variety for the condition of Loco (and Fuel)(particularly for Steamers)-selectable by sliders AND/OR randomised.
Most locos run like a dream when fresh from Works - but try 'em when they are due (or overdue) for 'shopping'.
Similarly, coal was sometimes bought for price rather than quality. Read any of the biogs of the old-time steam drivers and it is clear that one of the key skills of a crew was to quickly assess the condition of their unknown 'mount' and adjust their driving accordingly.
A pristune Scotsman over the S&C is a doddle-but just try it in the pouring rain with furred-up tubes and a box full of clinker!!4) Gradient Indications (either track-side or on the Track Monitor) - any Driver will tell you that acute sensitivity to grade is probably the no.1 key to precise driving.5) A Signalman/Dispatcher Mode: Sometimes it makes a change to let the others (ie computer) do the driving and to just sit in the box (local or modern 'power' box) and control their movements (...REVENGE!!...).6) And finally (& most trivially?), even if no passengers (for AI reasons explained elsewhere) why not, at least, 'slamming door' effects at stations to give the impression of activity!DESIGN OPTIONS
1) A more intuitive Editing suite (I think this is EVERYBODY'S No.1 wish)!2) More Signal Options (Semaphore & Multi-Aspect). Those I've seen so far all seem to be basic 'single-flag' types. In the real-world one of the most difficult road skills, particularly at busy junctions & stations, is picking out the correct one from a vast array, particularly on over-line gantries.
Plus (for the 'retro' UK user at least), "Why no ground signals?" - tricky to spot, but essential to follow!
Constructable (& workable) compound signal elements please.3) Facility in input, and try to work to, 'real-world' timetables, rather than computer-generated ones.4) A simplified & cut-down 'Model Railway' Version/Mode - particularly to catch the interest of younger potential enthusiasts. Nowadays, living space is at a premium & we can't all manage to grab the loft-space for a real model railway.
A one-box solution for all
A REAL RAILWAY FOR THE 'PROFESSIONALS' &
A VIRTUAL TRAIN SET, just for fun! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-14-01, 04:26 PM (EST) 221. "RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" Reasonable wishes:1) Better editing tools and instructions.2) A weather randomizer. Something that will (depending on the designer's choice) assign a season/and or weather to an activity at run time. 3) A correct NEC from NYP to WAS, (especially Baltimore--as it is, you can't get to the prototype southbound tracks, the tunnel's second bore is a dead end, it's in the wrong place...) and eventually, all the way to BOS.4) More protoypical rolling stock. AEM-7's would be nice in the NEC.5) Better physics & lighting.Pipe dreams:5) More accurate WAV files. 6) Schedule fudging. If you get somewhere early and passengers are finished boarding, you should get the OK to proceed command shortly after the clock hits the minute mark for departure. 6) Add-on packs for historical equipment. More US steam.7) Add-on routes... but they'd better be 100% accurate. I'd be willing to pay for the PRR's main line west from Zoo interchange all the way to CUS, with the engine change at Harrisburg.8) Talking dispatch--the ability to add WAV files as activity/timed events.Derek Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: FORUM MOM: Post Your "WISHES" for future versions of Train Sim" OK- here's another one that's probably been mentioned (the more the better)--some kind of monitoring to indicate grades. I find it difficult sometimes to time braking and throttle applications in response to gradient. Maybe a small profile that moves along as you travel showing your location but large enough so you know where you are on the line. Okay?Thanx AginTM Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

If the wp feather river canyon and high line were done, it could be done in wp siver and orange with zephyr, or green wp with bn trains off the high line, or up to date with the UP up the canyon to portola and the BNSF down the highline through the canyon.
Numerous combonations can be achieved from the same trackage, and the scenic value of one of the prettiest lines in the country.
Another thing i think would be nice is a North American addition or a north american expansion pack. Nothing bad to the others in the world, but i would have liked to see more american railroading than over seas. i would support and buy those add ons if i wanted them.
