I think I've banged my head against the wall (against the hillside?) long enough....I've been trying and trying to get through the drag_8312 activity for MLT's CC route, but the biggest obstacle right now is the grade right before MP 541.6. No matter what I've tried it seems like when I hit that part of the grade the train bogs down to less than 5mph and stalls just before the signal. I checked the .eng files for the locomotives concerned and made sure the 'Antislip (1)' line was present which cured the wheelslip, but I still can't get the momentum. If I leave Oakridge at 1404 as on the timetable and run full throttle (without exceeding the speed limit) I will run into oncoming Stop signals real quick and lose speed in slowing down until the signals change to Approach. Does waiting longer at Oakridge do the trick? Should I just be laying down a beach from Oakridge to the summit, or has anyone done it without sand? Any help is much appreciated.
Mr. F

RE: Drag 8312 activity for CC -- climbing that hill aga

The anti-slip is the problem from all that I've read. The only consistant answer is - yes - use the sand as soon as the speed starts to drop. Without the sand the anti-slip keeps dropping the power until you will indeed bog down.Bill Alder

Having the anti-slip on is good, but you must check your numwheels setting (there are 2 of these lines in most .eng files). Put it to 2 or 3 and see what happens. If you have them higher than 4, the adheasion becomes so poor that the antislip kicks in reducing the power to the wheels---guess what--you stall. The numwheels settings are basically divisors to the overall adheasion....it is not the number of wheels the loco has. It is an easy way to play with the adheasion without having to tinker with that line specifically.By reducing the numwheels number, you increase the adheasion of the engine. Having it at 1 is like being glued to the rails (not very realistic). I hope this helps.Bryce

Actually the answer is to download the patch for the heritage packs from MLT. It will solve the problems and you will be able to get the train up the 'hill' without any problem. In fact, in run 5 most of the way up.I have answered this question several times when people have emailed me about it. Just look in the readme and you will find my email.

I could have sworn that I applied the SPH updates when they were first released, but I reapplied them just to be sure. I kept the sand on all the way from Oakridge to the summit and didn't struggle at all. Thanks much for the help.Oh yeah, it's OT, but greetings from the West End of Richmond, Sharon! I could throw small objects at you from where I am (okay, maybe not THAT close, I'd probably need a catapult). I know Glen Allen somewhat--I make occasional outings to the CompUSA on West Broad St., and about 6 years ago I worked a brief tech support contract at the Hamilton Beach HQ in Innsbrook. Small world. Mr. F

Mr. F.,With the patch you don't even need the sand. With that extra unit, you can actually get up the hill in run 5 most of the time and still be flirting with the other train's reds.Live off Hungary Rd.

This number is basically telling the game how many wheels are on the rail of each truck.if you change it from 6 to 2, you now have 2 wheels on the rail(so to speak) therefor there is more weight in one spot giving better adhesion, but without the added friction of the other four wheels, braking is greatly diminished.engine = 145,000lbs , divide that by 2 trucks and that gives you 72,500lbs per truck.
if you have 6 wheels on the rail, that is aprox 12,084lbs on each wheel.
if you have only 2 wheels on the rail, that is 36,250lbs on each wheel, so with that much weight sitting on a two inch spot, it is quite difficult to for the wheels to slip, but now you only have 1 traction motor for dynamics instead of three and only two sets of brake shoes instead of six actually working.

RE: Drag 8312 activity for CC -- climbing that hill aga

I am sorry, but you are not correct in how this works. Numwheels has NOTHING to do with the number of wheels or axles. It acts as a divisor in the adhesion calculation. If the adhesion is set as typically used in the adhesion line of the sim, then numwheels should always be 4. This will keep sanding adhesion appropriate.

RE: Drag 8312 activity for CC -- climbing that hill aga

I wish I could get to the point where I'm climbing the hill
you all are talking about. When I first started the act. the
sim. would freeze as soon as I pulled the throttle out. I
removed the engs. and some cars next to the player train and
got past this point. Now I can make it to where the eng. consist makes it past the signal bridge and freezes. I have changed
distance levels, terrain error threshold, visibility, world
objects density ( mark 7,no trees )to get pasted this point.
I'm running Windows XP, computer is less than 6 mo. old, and thought it had enough inside that it could handle anything given
to it. I like scenery, not barren landscape. Any thoughts??
Thanks, John B.

Hey John; I don't think you need to be pulling anything out. Have you not turned the two train density sliders down a notch? This seems to be the concensus of opinion to stop the sim from locking up, unless you have a video card with very limited memory.Just a thought. Chuck F.
