Regarding the UP portion of the Cajon Pass route, has it always been UP? Or was it originally SP and then acquired by UP as part of the UP/SP merger?

RE: Question re: Cajon Pass route

The "Palmdale Cutoff" was built by the SP and until the merger, there were no trackage rights.

I think UP had trackage rights over the ATSF (now BNSF) line dating years back.

Leiv Eiriksson was first - Christoffer Columbus used a Viking map!

RE: Question re: Cajon Pass route

To add to the discussion, a connecting track was installed in 1999, after the UP took over the SP. It’s just West of Summit, between the former SP Palmdale Cutoff and the former AT&SF North track. The location is referred to as “Silverwood”. This allows UP trains a straight shot (on the original UP route)between West Colton Yard and Barstow, without running all the way to Colton crossing on the BNSF.The Palmdale Cutoff also provides a slightly better descent than the BNSF line, especially the 3.2% South track. There was (or still is?) also a crossover between the two further down the canyon at Keenbrook, installed in anticipation of the stillborn AT&SF-SP merger. The ICC shocked the railroad world when they denied the merger application. The two railroads were so confident of approval that they had already begun painting locomotives in a new SPSF paint scheme. I understand this crossover was seldom used except for wreck detours on some occasions.Neither of them is modeled in the 3DTS Cajon Pass route. If I'm feeling especially brave, I may try to install them in my copy, but so far whenever I have tried to tinker with a route that is signaled, I've had disastrous results. Fortunately, I have always backed up my files before messing with them.

Regards,
Nick
