Hi everyone,
About a month ago I noticed that my frame rates would "lock" at 32 frames per second at various times! This really smoothed out my sim! All the stuttering for the most part would completely disappear and my f/p/s would never rise above 32!(in heavy scenery it would drop below 32!)
I know in FS2004 there is the option to limit your frame rates which I found greatly helped the stuttering and jerkiness!
I also know that MSTS has a 60 f/p/s limit!
My question is this;
Where is this limit of 60 f/p/s set? What file? Is it "hardcoded" where it can,t be changed?
I would love to set a new limit of around 28 or so for it would really smooth out the sim!
The first time I noticed this is after I replaced my camera config. file!
Thank You! Any help would be appreciated!
RickB
P.S. I have X/p with 3.06 GIG /512 memory & ATI 9700 ! Also Hyperthreading!

RE: Method to limit frame rates?

HT is normally enabled/disabled through the bios. you can "fake" turning it off for mSTS by starting the sim, minimizing, going to processes in the task manager, right click train.exe and click set affinity. then make sure only cpu 0 is selected.
I have not noticed any gain by disabling HT through bios or affinity.

RE: Method to limit frame rates?

Thank you Mark & Derek for taking the time to help me out!

Derek, I turned off Hyperthreading thru the task manager and also bumped up the game priority to high!
IMHO I noticed a much smoother runing sim! My F/R,s before would jump all over the place but are now much more stable! Nice tip!

Mark, its to bad there isn,t a way to cap F/R,s!
Again,Thank You!
RickB
P.S. "VERY IMPORTANT"- From what I have read; DO "NOT" SET YOUR PRIORITY TO "REALTIME" WITHIN TASK MANAGER!!!!( I understand this can REALLY MESS UP YOUR COMPUTER!)

RE: Method to limit frame rates?

Hi Michael,
I wish I could help you on that one but my windows 98 knowledge is very limited! I,m sure someone can answer your question and get you on the right track (pun intended)!

Anybody?

One thing I do know though is that if you get the chance by all means "upgrade" to XP! You won,t be sorry!
Take care,
RickB

RE: Method to limit frame rates?

I have had ATI and nVidia video cards, and with both of them I could fix the Frame Rate in any particular resolution. Have a look around your GFX card setup, see what you can find!Cheers, 7&Y

>Have a look around your GFX card setup, see what you can find! What you are setting is the screen refresh rate, nothing to do with FR in the sim.

RE: Method to limit frame rates?

Wouldn't it be pointless to have a frame rate higher than the refresh rate of the monitor? I have a comparatively "slow" lcd screen with a refresh rate of 60hz - I would also imagine that a frame rate which is a high multiple of the refresh rate (i.e. 15, 20, 30) would reduce the jerkiness just a bit. Any thoughts on this?

>just a bit.Yes, you shouldn't continue to see any improvements in the apparent quality once the FPS exceeds the screen refresh rate. With my monitor refresh rate set at 85hz, I should see improvements until I exceeded 85fps. MSTS is capped at 60fps no matter what kind of hardware you have.Once you get your fps consistently above 30fps your eye should perceive it as smooth continuous movement. For reference motion pictures are 24fps and television is 30fps. But both of those formats have motion blur in their individual frame images which helps the eye with the illusion of movement, not the sharply drawn images that a PC will render for each displayed frame.Method to limit frame rates? – image 3
