Since we now have the cabforwards and the traditional cab in the rear, I figured I would round out the selection with a cab in the middle. This is the Camelback American used by the Philadelphia & Reading back at the turn of the previous century (1900's). It's a work in progress but I thought I would post for some comments and constructive criticism (I want it to be "all that it can be")Since I love detail, it will probably top 10,000 polys. My goal is no more than that but it's at 4000 and counting now. I'm hoping it will be ready by Christmas.

RE: Camelback in progress

The plans I have are for the American (4-4-0) version, Model Railroader, December 1982. Here's a photo of the real thing. In fact I'm actually modeling number 406 (need to change that number). Number 400 had a square steam chest. I may do both versions. Don't know about doing a 4-6-0. Maybe if I can find the drawings for one. I'm afraid I don't have find any info to do a custom cab. My philosophy on custom sounds is "for this old of a locomotive, who would know if it's right?" but I'll do my best to make it sound like I THINK it would have. But what about the texturing? I'm constantly tweaking, changing, adjusting but just can't seem to get something I'm satisfied with. It seems a bit too dark, and maybe too much "blue" in the black? Any tips?

RE: Camelback in progress

Thank you! I have never modeled anything so I can't give any constructive criticism other then to ask that the L&NE and the L&HR are not forgotten if you decide to build more.Jack

RE: Camelback in progress

I have plans for a CNJ 4-6-0 #754, I think.(and more Reading camelbacks). I have a TSM version of this locomotive started. Would you want to finish it? An older version is in the library. The newer version has some animation done, but it takes me forever.I have three camelbacks going, but only the CNJ version has gotten anywhere. One is a Reading 4-4-0 similar to yours in GMAX (which I haven't been able to learn well enough to finish) and an Erie articulated that I lost in a disk crash. There are pictures in this thread...
http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID1/8535.htmlAnyway, let me know if you need anything from me. If you need drawings let me know. I have several decades of old magazines and books and may have some you want.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Camelback in progress

Frank thanks for the offers. I don't know TSM so I can't take advantage of your work. I do appreciate the offer though. And I don't want to bite off more than I can chew right now. At the speed I work these things take an enormous amount of time and my wife is showing signs of loneliness if you know what I mean. I lost about 4 hours when Gmax started crashing. What I learned is that you can only have 64 parts in your model so I had to start combining them. Luckily I make lots and lots of backups so I didn't loose much once I figured out what the problem was. Anyway, after I finish this one, I might look into the 4-6-0. That articulated looks really interesting too.

RE: Camelback in progress

Boy, do I know what you mean...When I really get caught up in these models my wife doesn't see me for days at a time. My interest has waned of late so we're spending more time together. One fortunate thing, my "office" is sort of open to the family room, so we can still be "together", even if we're in seperate rooms. It helps a little.Even the smallest project takes huge amounts of time, especially since you can add lots of detail to a small model. Than there is all the testing and revisions etc...I really like the articulated too. It's an Erie L-1 and I was nearly heart broken when I lost it. I've been working on bringing it back, only this time I'm starting from the running gear up. If I can create one full set with it's Walscheart gear it would just be a matter of copying to creat the second set. Getting that first set done has been the greatest hassle. I've been caught up in other "easier" models, avoiding the complexity of these steamers as much as possible. I know it's gonns be a huge committment of time. Now I'm trying to learn 3D-Canvas, which adds to the effort. I didn't know there was a limit to the number of GMAX parts. Glad I decided on 3DC.I'll keep chipping away at these, hopefully they'll come out as nice as yours seems to be.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Camelback in progress

You would think we would start with something as simple as the little 0-4-0 at Strasburg, wouldn't you? Especially since the valve gear is older and simpler. The running gear is about 75% of the work on steam engines, so it makes sense to go for the older engines first.I think I could start with one of my Winans "camels". Same cylinders and valve gear (Stephenson?). The boiler might also be close to the size needed for a switcher. It might be just the kind of project to get me out of this slump I'm in. I'll take a shot at it.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!
