I just replaced my GeForce2 64mb card with a GeForce FX5600 256mb card and have no increase in frame rates at all, either in MSTS or MSFS2002. I installed it properly and have the latest drivers.Question: Are there any settings, either on the card or in the software, that I need to play with? Or is my P4 1.5GHz CPU just not capable of taking advantage of the new card?

RE: Video Card settings

Hi -
The most important piece of equipment governing frame rates in MSTS is your .... CPU !
The more powerful your CPU, the better your frame rates.
I have seen only 2-3 FPS difference between a Geforce 2 and a Geforce 3 Ti200. But your video card's drivers can have a lot to do with frame rates. (Depending upon your system, etc.)
I have seen a difference of up to 10 FPS with different Nvidia drivers. Right now the best combo I've managed is a Geforce 4 Ti4600 with Nvidia 31.40 drivers. (Win 98se, Direct X 8.1, AMD 2000+ CPU, 768 SDRAM). FPS range from 9 to 60, depending on the sim's settings.
If you can't upgrade your CPU, try changing your Nvida drivers.
And remember, anything above 20-21 FPS are not really noticed by most human's eyes.Good luck and enjoy.

RE: Video Card settings

I have the newest nVidia drivers, 66.93. They always say to use the latest version so I never guessed that an earlier version might be better. There are 21 older drivers on nVidia's site.Unfortunately my computer can't accept anything faster than a Pentium 4 2.0GHz chip, which I suppose is still 33% better. The problem is it's hard to find.

RE: Video Card settings

a question to #2 bjrhatigan Hireading your post and having a PIV, Windows 98 Se, 768 ram, ge force 5200 /256 memory I went to www.nvidia.com try to find the driver you use wich is 31.40 .Searching the old drivers archive I was not able to find that version.I found Windows 95/98/Me/Version: 30.82
and Windows 95/98/Me/Version: 40.71 , both dated 2002.Are you sure your version is 31.40? If yes where did you get it?Regards

RE: Video Card settings

Settings problem over. Thank you Dell and the pre-holiday sales. I bought a P4 3.2GHz machine with 1GB RAM and a 128mb video card. It arrives next week and I'd better see some frame rate improvements!

RE: Video Card settings

Hi Damascus:The latest Nvida drivers are not necessarily the best with respect to MSTS. This game uses out of date old technology. The last time I updated my Geoforce 3 drivers, frame rates dropped from 25 to 9. Try some older drivers - you should find a pleasant suprise in there somewhere.Mark

RE: Video Card settings

I am running the same drivers, 66.93, and have no problems. Try the following which may make a lot of difference:
antialiasing @ 2xQ
anisotropic @ 4X
image setting @ performance
Hope this helps,
Bob

RE: Video Card settings

Hello -
Replacing the CPU -
What are you running now? If you're running better than an AMD 2000+,
you're doing better than me!
Anyway - Changing out your brain is not for the faint of heart.
Research your motherboard. Find out what is the most powerful CPU it can take. And what type, too. If your mobo has an AMD 1.5 CPU, go with AMD; Pentium to Pentium, etc. Then reasearch that CPU. Find out whats the best fan-cooling solution.
I won't go into specifics, there's lots of better advice on the web you can print out - (www.overclockers.com, etc.)
VERY important - GROUND yourself. I learned long ago the expensive way about static electricity and computer innards.
Best of luck -

RE: Video Card settings

Thanks to all. The P4 1.5GHz chip is only upgradeable to a 2.0 and I'm not sure if spending $140 is worth the increase (if I can find what is now an obsolete chip). The anisotropic and anti-aliasing settings actually slowed things down. It does appear that the CPU is the culprit and I'll probably try to return the video card. A new motherboard is pricey as well.

RE: Video Card settings

Take a look here.....http://www.powerleap.comI've used their products in the past for various reasons and they appear to work fine and allow you to upgrade your CPU without replacing your motherboard.... I've used them when a Mobo swap out was not practical....Chuck Schneider
