Am I the only one having problems with the new version of Route Riter hanging when trying to compact a route? I mean, it is supposed to be faster than the old version, right? Well, with the 4.X version a route might take 20 minutes to compact, with the new version, it seems to hang (ie it just keeps on churning the hard drive but nothing happens on screen) after processing the lo_tiles (I tried three times, and all three times I stopped it with CTRL+ALT+DEL after about half an hour)

It was one of the default routes, JAPAN1 or JAPAN2 (unfortunately I cannot remember exactly).

It is the default JAPAN2 route, and it hangs after processing the SHAPES directory

New Route Riter hangs when compacting routes – image 3

Hi Ole, If you read the help file it carries this warning.Notes:
1. If you are using this program to compress routes you have downloaded, then after running the route from end to end (at Night and in the Snow as well as during the day), providing everything is OK, then you can delete your backup.
2. Do not run this utility against the Default MSTS routes or you will delete files which might be required by other routes. Pay attention to note number 2. My Computer specs are in my profile

RE: New Route Riter hangs when compacting routes

I haven't been able to compact any route with RR6. I've tried it on Cape Cod and MBTA (among others). It just stops responding (according to the Windows Task Manager) after it runs for a few minutes. I sure would like to be able to compact MBTA. Taking up over 2 gigabytes is endangering the survival of this route on my harddrive.CB

RE: New Route Riter hangs when compacting routes

Compacting a route is done for the purpose of making it smaller for Zipping, removing MSTS Default Routes Shapes, Texture and Sound files which are then added back to it after installing and running it's Installme.bat."Compacting" an installed Route will stop it loading, complaining about a "Train World" failure !O t t o

Otto,Running the Compact Route function should not render a route unuseable. Running the Make .Bat function will cause the train world initialization error.Craig

RE: New Route Riter hangs when compacting routes

You are right, Craig !Got that mixed up with the "Write .Bat" function !But "Compacting" a route should not be necessary, deleting from it shapes and textures it does not need, creators of an Add-On route should have take care of before preparing it for download ? Checking the MARIAS-KOOTENAI I realise that I did not before committing it for release, although I did at an earlier stage ! Old age again ! O t t o

RE: New Route Riter hangs when compacting routes

Check a couple of threads which include MBTA in the title and you will find a message where I gave information on compacting the MBTA route. This route had a .ref file of 8.3 megs which includes quarter of a million lines of text, each one of which RR had to parse. After that it needs to delete something like 27000 files - this takes a very very long time. The trick is to delete the .ref file and let RR build it's own .ref file , however you will also need to go through and check out all the other folders in this route, e.g. it has no Terrtex\Snow folder, it has a Snow(2) folder which needs to be renamed, then it has lots of other spurious folders which must be removed manually.I do not have the Cape Cod route, so do not know what the problem there is.Mike

I am not able to compact any route it seems, after making even small modifications to it, even if it has compacted successfully before. I guess I'll go back to the v5.x Route-Riter. At least that one WORKS

Yes I did. It works fine for everything, except compacting routes.

An even worse mistake with the newest version (from November 14th): In the rare cases that it is able to actually compact a route, it actually removes many files that are used in the route, genereating heaps of error messages when the route is run. Please make the v5.X version of RR available again until this can be fixed.

RE: New Route Riter hangs when compacting routes

Hi,Now that a user has been good enough to send me an example of which files were accidentally deleted, I think I have been able to fix RR and a patch to v6.1.47 is available on my site at
http://members.optusnet.com.au/beta6.htmlI checked it with MBTA and Marias-Kootenai. The problem was that RR was missing Shapes which appeared in the .W files as CollideObject (i.e. shapes with Collision detect turned on).Normally there are not many of these, but some authors do use them, and this omission was an error on my behalf. There was also a problem whereby a small number of SNOW textures could be missed (this was virtually limited to the Suburban House block models which have an ESD of 252 which does not use the Snow texture, but the .ace files used by these models are also used for some roads and house models).2. I have not been able to find a route which RR would not Compact, so would be interested to know which routes the latest version will not work with? On the Compact problem, I am wondering why anyone (apart from the original route author) needs to compact a route in any case? Most authors use RR on the route before it is uploaded, so really there should not be any requirement to use this option for virtually any route. Please advise of any further problems.Mike

The reason for this is I have kept the same folder designation since ADFRRV2 to allow keeping and using the 80+ activities from NERR and the activity packs that have been uploaded here. There have been only 2 path problems (that are being or have been fixed), so I thought it best to do it this way. Most of the changes have been added trackage, objects etc. which are simply added to the installation already there, saving quite a bit in the download process for upgrading. However, in the process, I've dropped a few objects (or changed them) and the route installation might benefit slightly by an added compacting once downloaded to get rid of any of these extraneous files. (Seems like the last time I did this it was only a few megs, but sometimes every meg counts). However, all of this will be in the read-me.Still enjoying RR immensely. Can't imagine MSTS without it RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com
