I keep getting this pesky error whenever I load MSTS or AE/RE/CE and when I exit an activity. But no file reference is given, just: "Error reading train database fileFile: Line: 593"The file line is blank. I have searched for a blank file with Explorer and Consist Editor test, and have found none. And of course, thanks to MSTS quality, I have no idea where line 593 is.Can anyone help? TIAfwb
FWB: In all liklihood you have a number of brackets errors. A line number of 593 would be in an .eng file. Either at the bottom or around the "description" or "operating procedure" area. What to do: Run EngMod and use the bracket check function. Let it check all your .eng & .wag files. Don't be surprised if you get a long list of files with errors. Next, use an editing program to find the bracket problems. This is a manual process, 1 file at a time. I use jEdit. It is freeware, I think the address is jedit.org. Hope this helps.JohnCYNDI RICHARDS 1938 * 2004 You will always be here with us.
Thanks. I ran EngMod for a bracket check and got a list of files, mostly .eng files, and tried to d/l jedit but the instructions are beyond my comprehension, especially when they talk about plug-ins and such. I'm first a RR man, not a computer expert. Is there some other way to "count brackets" and find the missing or extra ones? Why don't I get MSTS error messages for all the files that EngMod kicked out?Your help is appreciated.fwb
From what I understand, the extra bracket just tells MSTS that the file is over and it does not read anything below it. So as far as MSTS is concerned there is no error.Fred
FWB; Don't worry about plug ins and stuff. Open a problem file with jEdit and click on the top bracket. Along the left gutter a line will appear, just follow it down to the matching bracket. The other way is print out a list of cars id'ed by EngMod. Open a file and match brackets manually. Some of the more common errors are: at the end of the lighting section are 5 brackets, should only be 4. In .eng files the errors are usually around the bottom due to typos. You can safely delete the description and engine operating procedures. If you do, the end of a typical engine file will look like this:Name ( "whatever" ) )You can use an .eng or .wag file that is good for comparison. Take the time to read the instructions for jEdit, don't worry about plug ins, buffers, etc. This is one utility that is worth its weight in gold. Itreally is not that hard. >Is there some other way to "count brackets" and find the missing or extra ones? You can count them by hand if you like, I gave up and wrote the brace check routine. The standard install of jedit highlights the brace pairs as you move the cursor over the braces, just start at the top of the file. If you still have problems, email me the files and I will fix them for you.
it SEEMS, that all you need is the program itself.. not the java.. (almost 15 meg there)(its ALSO real interesting HOW you start the program..) HOWEVER.. I got it and now got a problem.. Could some kind person get 3 files for me, that somehow got ROYALLY screwed, so I can get MSTS back up and running? I need: Dash9.eng US2BNSFCAR.wag Class50.eng these are SO trashed that nothing will fix them.. and hope to not have to reinstall the complete thing to get the Dash 9 and the BNSF car.. Thanks.. BTW.. CONBUILDER passes the files as OK.. EngineMode was the one that ORIGINALLY fussed.. and ROUTERITER does NOT show an error.. but MSTS sure does.. email shivanow@pcis.net
