Otto & Frank:
Looking very good, can't wait till it's finished.
In photos 1 & 4 some track sections appear to be out of alignment or is it just the camera angle?JohnCYNDI RICHARDS

RE: Winter on the MARIAS-KOOTENAI

Hi John !I noticed the odd looking Snow track bed textures too ! Seems to have something to do with the way they were laid and for some reason would need "T" flipping to align the appearance of the track bed with the other sections. This Europe "Snow" Acleantrack1.ace is the only one I can find which comes close in appearance to the one we use, short of snow-texturing the Acleantrack1.ace myself, I had to do with a lot of vegetation as it is ! When you look closely at the trackbed you will notice that one edge of the trackbed does not mirror the opposite one and it is therefore impossible to put down track sections not knowing in the RE what the Snow textures will look like. Curves could not be matched even if I would know !The ones Sniper uses are better in that respect but did not like the dark center of the ties, also looking odd in switches.Do you know a good looking wooden ties Snow textured trackbed I could use instead ?O t t o

RE: Winter on the MARIAS-KOOTENAI

Hi Otto,If you like, I could probably fix that snow track up for you. I've had quite a bit of practice re-aligning and re-texturing my own track collection to get them as perfectly balanced as possible (some are pretty bad). At the very least I think I can greatly improve on what we see in the picture. If interested, just zip up the Acleantrack1 and Acleantrack2 ACE files and email them to wind101@shaw.ca . I should be able to fix them up and have them back to you in a day or two.Cheers,
Hugh

RE: Winter on the MARIAS-KOOTENAI

Hi Hugh !Thanks for the offer !! But having learnt how to apply Winter textures to all the Vegetation in the route I thought I might just as well have a go at the Snow-AcleanTrack1.ace as well ! But doing this I noticed that the normal AcleanTrack1.ace shows the ties a different shade of brown on one side also. Going to be seen to next !Also thought that there is not much snow settling on the blades and tips of grass and hope that the picture below looks real enough ?This route may not be everybody's cup of tea, as we say here in the U.K., but all these Snow Textures could be useful in other routes ? Take care, O t t o.Winter on the MARIAS-KOOTENAI – image 9 Winter on the MARIAS-KOOTENAI – image 10

>Take care, O t t o. Otto, do you have or know of a tutorial for making or re-doing the snow textures for the vegetation with results similar to what you've done above. Those are absolutely fantastic. My route is supposed to be a 'heavy snow, winter type' route and as it is, is severely lacking. Any links or info would be much appreciated since I'm a complete dunce when it comes to the texturing end of things.RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com

RE: Winter on the MARIAS-KOOTENAI

LAST EDITED ON Oct-01-04 AT 02:00 PM (EDT)

Hi Bob !For a start you could download the Marias-Kootenai when it's available and feel free to use all it's Snow Vegetation textures to save you having to do it yourself ! But if you prefer to create your own personal preferences then all it takes is TGATool2 to load an .ace into it and "Send Main Image" to your favourite Graphics Editor. I use PaintShop Pro 7 with a square size 3 or 4 tip and paint small white squares strategically placed all over the enlarged item in question, not overdoing it and neither skimping. With dense bushes there tends to be more snow at their tops and less further down, depending on how the wind blew at the time and grass blades would have no snow on their blades tips and less on the way down.AcleanTrack1 trackbeds could be made to look all snow, over-painting the ties so that all you can see in the route is snow all over the trackbeds, covering it completely, with just the rails showing, as is the case in many wintry mountainous alpine regions. You will get a stiff finger after a while, punching that left mouse button over and over until most is covered in snow blobs. After saving the image in the Graphics editor on the way out with X you then reload the image in TGATools2 and then Export it as an ACE with Alpha channel file, either overwriting the one you started with or creating a new one.A separate working folder is the best idea for messing, adding some more snow if you are not happy with what you have done, or start again, until you are ready to commit your work to the routes Seasonal Textures folders. Also realised that in order for a Shape to show more than it's basic texture the ESD_Alternative_Texture ( 252 ) setting is required in it's .sd file !You can E-Mail me from the bottom of my site's front page if you want more instant info on how it did all this:
www.otto-wipfel.co.ukThere already having been many Forests in the MARIAS-3 part of the route which did not like me changing their trees in the World files, I copied more suitable tree files over them, which needs altering the INSTALLME.bat after Route Riter has created it to make sure that it does not overwrite the files you have substituted with another version. The trees or bushes in Forests can also be changed in the World files globally after they have been created, should making them a little bit taller, shorter or fatter be desirable ! I use UltraEdit-32 for that which can "FIND\REPLACE ALL" in selected files externally. But make sure you choose a size which does not clash with an existing one, difficult to change again if needed, other items having the same size !Have Fun ! O t t o

RE: Winter on the MARIAS-KOOTENAI

If you need variety and more snow textures, look at the foliage in the Sumpter Valley route. I did custom trees, Pine, Fir, Larch and Juniper, with full seasonal textures, some with heavy snow and bent branches from the snow load.Winter on MARIAS-KOOTENAI looks like the "why" of my move to the coast from the interior of Oregon! Nice job.

RE: Winter on the MARIAS-KOOTENAI

Thanks for pointing out what you have been working on, Steve ! Pity I did not know about it before. The MARIAS-KOOTENAI is more or less finished now after I got all the Seasons working with varying Rain in them with Lightning and Thunder, the latter if the appropriate 16 Mb sound file is installed.I think we are going to use this trackbed for the route and being a passenger as well as freight line think it is more appropriate. For a start the trackbed edges are not staggered and recessed like with the others. What do you think ?CHEERS, O t t o.Winter on the MARIAS-KOOTENAI – image 11
