Would anyone know why I would have to install DirectX 9.0c everyday? Things go down hill after about half a day. I Install it, works fine for about 6 hours, goto work, come home, its choppy in both Train Simulator and Route Editor, leave for a bit, and run both again, and it takes close to a minute to go anywhere in any direction. The only thing I could begin to fathom is maybe WinVNC is messing with DirectX?

RE: DirectX

Does it do that without MSTS installed? Is it the only program it effects? If it is, maybe try re-installing the sim. That would be my guess.

RE: DirectX

MSTS is the only program that really uses it. I have reinstalled MSTS, and formatted and installed and reinstalled. Its driving me nuts. Never had this problem before.

RE: DirectX

This could be tough. Are you running Windows XP? If so do a couple of things. Bring up the task manager when you first start and everything is running fine. Make a note of all the processes running and the memory they have. Go to work and do this again when you get home and it has slowed down. Have any new processes started? Grown in memory size? Is the CPU usage about the same as when you left or did it rise? See which processes are using the CPU time. System Idle processes should be in the 90's, if not, see what process is hogging the CPU.
This is just a start to a long drawn out logical process to narrow down the cause.Larry

RE: DirectX

I agree, Larry, not an easy one !Two things come to my mind. There is a CD / DVD in it's drive, MSTS needing to get more route data from the hard drive has to spin up the drive every time it does that. The machine overheating, especially the Graphics Card ?O t t o

There is no CD in the drive. The machine I keep in a cabinent (Enclosed Server Rack). I keep the machine cool, but You might be on to something with the graphics card over heating. I will consider changing them out. The only thing is that the regular desktop and all other applications work fine. Right now though, I am going to finish a preview route for my Frisco Route before I go changing things. Its the Burrton Subdivision from North Wichita to Ellsworth, KS.

RE: DirectX

I've had problems even since I had DirectX 9.0b. I can play MSTS for about 20 minutes normally, but after that, the frame rates go down to about 4FPS and don't go back up to my normal 30FPS until 5 seconds later. This stuttering occurs about every 10 seconds. When I quit MSTS and run DXDIAG, it says that there was a problem accessing Direct 3D the last time that it was used, which was when I played MSTS. I still have found no solution to my problem. I have a Dell Inspirion 5150 laptop with 512 RAM, 3 gHZ P4 processor, and 64MB GeForce video chipset. I also have had similar problems with Flight Simulator 2004 as well.

Could also be that DirectX-9.0c could improve your problems ? Did a 6 hours non-stop run testing the Marias-Kootenai recently and MSTS performed at the same rate of knots throughout !I never experienced problems similar to your's with either DirectX-9.0, 9.0a, 9.0b or 9.0c now.WIN-XP Home, AMD XP1800+, 1.5 Gb RAM and a nVidia TI-4600 with the 30.82 driver, I found being the best for MSTS using this card.O t t oP.S.: Just had another thought, looking at the amount of RAM your machine has got. Could be that other programs or Services running in the background are using up Memory forcing MSTS, having used all there is and not managing it very well anyway, to make use of slower "Virtual Memory" on overcrowded not de-fragged disk space ?Have a look at the Task Manager's "Performance" info when MSTS starts behaving oddly !

Im running Directx9.0c. My test with WinVNC also disproved that theory. Everything runs around 90% with MSTS, which is normal. I wouldnt mind going back to DirectX 7 which always worked for me. I just dont know how to uninstall DirectX. And for you all wondering what my stats are:
Windows 2000
K6-2 500 Mhz
256 Mb Ram
15gig/6gig
DVD5X
CDRW
3dfx Interactive Banshee with 16mb @ 1152 x 864
17" Dell Monitor
External 50hz-60hz video converter (For making MSTS movies).
Just a note, my Page File is 343 MB, with only 243 used.

RE: DirectX

Just agreeing with Otto on the subject of an overheating graphics card. The line of thought being that Directx handles video requests one of two ways: 1. If it knows your video card, and the card has onboard hardware to do the math, it turns over the 3D video calculations to that card. 2. If it doesn't know the card, or the card can't do the processing, it uses your CPU to do the math for the graphics card. Perhaps earlier versions of directx didn't turn over everything to the graphics card, it could be that the newer version did because being newer it was aware of the cards capabilities. If your graphics processor is going belly up, thus the problem. If I remember correctly there used to be a way to go into the directx settings and lock it into a mode of not offloading graphics calculations to the card. I would try that and see if the speed stays up. It's been so long that I have messed with directx I can't tell you exactly how to do it though. The problem might not show up on regular applications because, graphically speaking, nothing much is going on requireing complicated 3D rendering.I too have directx 9c running with no problems on 3 different PC's. Most notable, my old standby Dell Dimension XPS T450 running at 450 MHz got about a 5 FPS boost in performance with directx 9.Larry

I agree also about the overheating graphics card...I ran MSTS for a year on a K-6 2-400 and it ran great, except That I had a 64 meg. video card and 512 megs of ram...With a processor of less than 750 mhz., you should at least upgrade to a 64 meg. video card and increase your ram...Also there are several versions of DX9.one of them , I believe is only good for Win. 2000. good luck.....My old k6 2-400 still running fine and my son is using it now..Frank P.S. I don't believe there is a way to safely uninstall Direct X.

RE: DirectX

Well Larry, I think your right. I uninstalled Direct X 9.0c and went back to Direct X 7, and the frame rate still slowed down after going to bed. Geuss I should pull out one of the spares. BTW, if you want to uninstall DirectX, and put an older version on, try Direct X Buster.
