Cascades Crossing runs well, 30-50 fps normally but when I use one of the default 77-car consists my framerates drop to the high single digits, even though the consist isn't "on-screen".The question is, I'm guessing MSTS loads the entire consist into memory, is there a magic number of cars to stay below? Is this normal behavior or is there a faulty wagon somewhere?I've run the consist/wagons/engines through Conbuilder and have no anomolies.Appreciate any help from the gurus.
There is really no "magic number" to stay below on consists, because every system is different. But yes, the longer the consist, the lower the framerate.-Jeff
MSTS has to calculate the physics for the whole train (and any other train within the 2 miles), and it may be showing that your CPU is a bit small for what you are trying to do.
I was having a lot of problems with longer consists (70-80 cars) on CC. It wasn't the fps ao much, as the entire game just freezing up. I've had success by limiting my consists now to less than 50. So far, so good.
Part of what you're seeing is the incredible resource hit (CPU, video card RAM, etc) given by using 1024 x 1024 textures on rolling stock. That 77 car train of 1024 textures is about the same resource hit as a train of 308 cars with 512 x 512 textures.Even MLT now realizes that 1024's on rolling stock simply hits systems too hard. You can consider resizing the 1024's down to 512, but that requires some working knowlege of TGATool2 and a capable paint program. With all due repect as to what typical end users think they want, the general consensus among most developers is slowly becoming: Save the 1024's for the loco's, use 512's on "work-a-day" rolling stock.
