Anyone know how to "kick" cars down a downgrade, as in a "hump" track??? I accidentially had a 4 car runaway on a down grade on the LV route, but cannot figure out how I did it ! I uncoupled the consist and did not move the train. I then reversed to couple ONTO the consist again for I did not want the consist spotted there. I then moved forward and WHALA! The consist was rolling down hill!! I raced my train backward to couple onto it and succeeded !! I would like to kick 1 or 2 cars a short distance if I can repeat what I did.I tried a couple of times to reproduce what I did, to no avail.
Thanks in advance!

>The cars kick in their handbrakes as soon as they are decoupled.I think it just depends. Sometimes when I'm doing switching, I'll put the Locomotive Brake around 85% or so, and put it in Run 5 (or whatever amount of throttle is deemed sufficient) and get up to about 12 MPH (use good judgement in the speed, because it varies according to total weight of train, distance to cars that they should couple to, car physics, etc.), then I lower the throttle to Idle and uncouple the cars. Sometimes it won't work and the cars will act as if they've gone into emergency. They don't put their handbrakes on though, that's maually done. But if you can get it to work, use good judgement in the speed at which you uncouple (ESPESCIALLY if you intend for the cars to coast into other cars in the siding without creating a big pile-up ), because it varies according to total weight of train, distance to cars that they should couple to, car physics, etc. It's fun too.You could also create a copy of a favorite car or two, and remove the braking sections, but I've never done that, so I don't know if it would work or not, but it may be worth a try.

Hi guys,> I think 3DTS has a car for Cajon which has been specially modified for doing that... yes, correct, these cars come with the Tehachapi II route and add "hump" versions to various types of 3dts cars. Why would they need additional files to achieve that? All cars in MSTS are supposed to apply full brakes when you uncouple them, as it is in the real world when couplers would separate (break) with the brake lines still open. This is an important safety feature to be found around the globe. In terms of MSTS, there is no way to "close" the brake lines before uncoupling in order to simulate deliberatly pushing-off cars on a hump in a yard (or whatever the correct English term for that process is). Yet you noticed correctly that some cars of yours behaved as if they were released over a hump when they ran away on their own. Let me guess that your run-away - or at least a substantial part of it - most probably consisted of
a) 100t coal hoppers, and/or
b) 40ft boxcars/reefers, especially the earlier ones without LOD's, and/or
c) the default BNSF Gondola, and/or
d) the two tank cars from the Cajon route (Cargill tanker and 3dts GATX tanker). Why should that be so? Well, it shouldn't, but due to an error in the .wag files, all of these cars have no working brakes at all, be it when they are part of your consist, be it when they are cut-off in a siding. Due to an extra closing bracket after the lights section, MSTS stops reading the .wag file before it ever gets to the section on brakes and sounds. Thus there are no handbrakes, no emergency application, nothing at all to stop them on a grade. Which is not a desireable situation either, as you will quickly agree after your first attempt to drive a unit coal train consisting of 100 loaded, brake-less hoppers down from Marias Summit into Essex (where you will never arrive with just your engines featuring brakes that work). You may want to read older posts on the "uneven brackets error" requiring urgent maintenance & repairs in a lot of .wag files. On average I'd say you can expect to find that error in ca. 15% of the freight cars in your fleet. I also suggest to make a check for the extra bracket on any new piece of equipment before installing it - the culprits are easily spotted, as they feature five closing brackets after the lights and just above the brakes section - there should be only four such brackets in that place. That is also a good occasion to check every piece of equipment for proper units of measurement in the coupler damping line (N/m/s instead of the erranous N/m of some default .wag files), and to add a name line of your liking to help you find the car more easily in ConBuilder or MSTS consist editor. Or, in a nutshell, to print out or to post above your car barn:Standard pre-delivery check:
- Coupler physics correct? Damping (and only damping) must be N/m/s!
- Correct number of closing brackets after lights section, if any? Must be 4x ")"!
- Name line present, and in line with nomenclature of your personal preference?
- Passenger equipment only: line "PassengerCapacity ( x )" present? Otherwise, loading/unloading feature will not work.
- .eng files only: front coupler physics present if needed (swichers, two-way equipment with cabs either end etc.)?

RE:

Thanks Lukas!
Great info! Actually the consist was made up of four cars. Three covered hoppers and the CN/cylindrical hopper, all found in the fl. I did however find braking extremely difficult with the open coal hoppers I was switching. I will have a post up on the "screen shots" forum where you can see exactly where it happened. The name will be called: "LV Coplay Cement to Egypt local switching". I will check my .wag files and see what I come up with.
Thanks to all who replied...

Bonjour Sebastien..."Ah, francais, c'est si magnifique, n'est-ce pas???!!!"
The correct phraseiology would be more..
"Ah,le francais, c'est si magnifique, n'est-ce pas???!!!"
or "Ah,le francais, c'est tellement magnifique, n'est-ce pas???!!!Yes I know..nothing to do with trains so I'll just get outta here...!!Georges
