Are there any Harriman Standard passenger cars available for train sim? Some yellow Union Pacific and grey Southern Pacific head end cars and coaches would go very nicely with the FEF Northern's in the UP Steam Mega Pack, or behind the black GS-4 that's available in the files.

RE: Harriman Standard Passenger Cars

Duncan:
Being a Passenger affectionado myself,I have looked everywhere for some decient heavyweight cars but there are few good ones around, and none of the shorty Harriman, round-roof cars available. The only decent heavyweight cars I've found are the ones 3DTrainStuff includes in their SF3751 (steam engine)add-on to their great Cajon Pass payware route. These are well done, but are the older, celestry-roof cars from the 20's (pre-airconditoning days), and are marked for the Santa Fe,with black roofs. No baggage car, but a combination baggage-lounge is included with the set. I wanted a set of heavies in Pullman green without roadnames which could be used on any railroad, so I taught myself how to "reskin" the cars and removed the Santa Fe roadname and lightened the black roof colors. Their coach and diner are a unique Santa Fe design, but the sleepers look generic-Pullman enought that they can be used on any road. All of 3DTS's stuff is payware, so I can only use them myself, but you could do the same too if you wish. Most of the heavyweight cars avail in the file for download were created some time ago, in the earlier days of MSTS, and so are a bit crude. Many have only blank windows with no interiors and almost all are of the celestry-roof vintage. There is a wide range of streamline cars available though and I guess it's because the simmers that build rolling stock are not from the generation that remembers or cares for the older, less glamorous passenger stuff. I've posted a query in several train sim forums trying to interest someone in building a set of late-model heavyweights (the air-conditioned ones from the 30's & 40's with round or partly-rounded rooflines) but...no takers to date. Creating them looks to be a good bit of work too, and I'm not skilled or knowledgable enough to do it myself. By the way, there is an older set of "Generic" heavyweight cars in the download file (can't remember the exact file name but believe it contains the word "generic" ) which includes a short hvywt baggage and a short RPO car, but they are really crude by today's standards, and need a great deal of "re-skinning" or re-painting to be usable. I used them in learning how to re-paint cars and they now look acceptable at the head-end of a heavyweight consist, but just barely! You might try to do the same thing. As is is now, I believe those of us who want to run heavyweight consists with steam or early diesel motive power will just have to make do with what is avail. Wish I could pass on a more encouraging response. Jon

RE: Harriman Standard Passenger Cars

I've always wondered why there is such a lack of old fashioned passenger cars. Narely a Pullman to be found anywhere! Can some of the old-timers (I say that with reverence) fill us in as to the cause(s)?

RE: Harriman Standard Passenger Cars

All,The best heavyweight's I have found - come with the equipment packs for Rich Garber's Ohio Rail - done by Dick Cowen... They are my favorite heavyweights... I don't know enough - however - to state whether or not they specifically match Harriman cars... They are 6 axle and they have a complete set... Hope this helps...Regards,
Scott

Just wanted to blow the same whistle as Scott. The heavyweights in the Ohio steam package are a spruced-up version of the above-mentioned generic heavyweight coaches v2, created by Damon Swanson and Teemu Saukkonen. These "generic heavyweights" of the second generation are not bad - and much less crude compared to the v1 cars released in the very early days of MSTS, of which numerous repaints exist! - and they come in quite a variety (several types of roofs, car lengths etc.). The only real shortcoming is that they lack an interior and thus usually just have their windows painted on. Unfortunately, they remained pretty generic, i.e. almost no-one took the effort to paint them into some decent scheme (or at least almost no-one published anything). Which I cannot quite understand as the v1 with its head end mapping issues etc. kept appearing in various repaints even after the release of the much more detailed v2...The only noteworthy exception I can remember is the Ohio Steam Pack, available at avsim, for which these generic heavyweights v2 were fitted with an interior and see-through windows, an inside passenger view, and so on. As Scott said, this is the work of Dick Cowen who has since re-focused on providing us with engine kits. The Ohio Rail Heavies come in two free-lance liveries, if I remember correctly in sets of five each: Baggage, Combine, Coach, Diner, and Observation car. Again, these five variants are the only ones fitted with an interior while the "generic set" contains many more models (four kinds of baggage cars, three types of diners, at least four types of observation cars, two or three types of coaches etc).I don't know of Dick ever planned on adding interiors to more sub-types of cars, or if interiors could easily be adapted - which I somehow would appreciate as this could breath some new life into the "generic heavyweights".Lukas a.k.a Swissie

RE: Harriman Standard Passenger Cars

Those screenshots are nice!Dick Cowen's versions of the heavyweights are indeed the best out there. There's even some more nice features about them as Scott and Lukas already mentioned above: Besides the heavy six-axle coaches (baggage, combine, coach, diner, observation car) the Ohio Rails steam pack also includes two four-axle commuter-type coaches (coach and combine). And as a special candy for repainters, Dick has done the lettering via an extra ace-file, so the base body files are still pretty generic, though being in OR&W / WV&O colors. From a short look at the ace files, the Canton cars seem to have some other mapping than the Ohio Rails cars and possibly even new shape files. Can anyone verify that?

Hi Ted, If you look closely, they are Canton Passenger Cars. I have looked in every file I have in My Downloads, our library & Avsim. I cannot locate that file. When I had a total computer crash I lost many of my files. Maybe Richard Garber or Dick Cowan will know. I'll watch this thread in case someone does.Until then, all I have is the 7 screenshots I took long ago. My Computer specs are in my profile

RE: Harriman Standard Passenger Cars

Hey Mike...Is it the Canton cars you are missing ? I think if you just search on Canton in the TS lib you should be able to find the pack with the cars... Not sure though - I know many updates were released and some of the orginal files pulled...What we also need - is a good "skinable" Pacific to pull these bad boys... I usually tow mine around with the TA Pacific - however - that is not freeware and also not redistributable... I have had a recent urge - to recreate some of the famous heavyweight steam trains of the past... Like the Alton Limited...I also sent TA an email asking if they would reconsider the licence on their awesome Pacific model... The newer PENNSY stuff they are building - will render much of the older stuff obsolete - if they complete that new SIM... Regards,
Scott

Hi Scott, I already tried all those things. So I sent Richard Garber an E-mail. By the way if you look at the screenshots you'll see a 2-8-2 Mikado on point. My Computer specs are in my profile

RE: Harriman Standard Passenger Cars

Hey Mike...Sounds like you got the basis covered... Yep - I noticed Dick Cowen's great 2-8-2 in the lead... It is an awesome looking locomotive and I use it alot... It just doesn't work for my attempt to model the trains I mentioned above... I am no expert and I may be wrong - but I think the "light mike" of that class was traditionally used by smaller branch line roads to haul freight.. I do not think it would have been able to pull - the top of the line - grade "A" passenger trains of the day... I think you needed a bigger faster locomotive for that... The 2-8-2 does fit in rather well around Caton - though... Nice screen shots too !!!Regards,
Scott

RE: Harriman Standard Passenger Cars

1) The two Canton passenger cars ARE new(ish) models. Modifications of my Ohio Rail TSM files.
2) The mikado IS too light for main line passenger work. It is for light (slow) freight working.{Small diameter drivers}
3) I have it in mind to release the Ohio Rail cars updated as reskinning kits.
4) That is if you speak to me nicely and there is a following wind!!
4) If any one has any pictures, plans (drawings) or suggestions they would be usefullDick C.

Hi Dick,> That is if you speak to me nicely and there is a following wind!!Well, I'd take a few of them, actually. I'm desperately missing some quality heavyweights to go behind steam/early diesel/electric equipment. It feels a bit incomplete to me to just run 40ft boxcars, single-dome tankers, cattle cars and low plank gondolae in a period where passenger business was still an important factor for revenue and reputation in the industry...Lukas a.k.a Swissie

RE: Harriman Standard Passenger Cars

Hi Dick,A dream would come true if you did a heavyweights kit! Although I must say that the Ohio Rails set is also quite a good starting point for individual reskins. One just needs to add some layers and there we go. The hardest thing then could be to create new alpha channels for new window positions etc. After doing some reskins of your heavyweights, I think there are endless possibilities! I only repainted the exterior of your cars, but even with only new paint and window arrangements the cars look completely new: http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID15/4217.htmlIf you are looking for pictures of heavyweights, there are some on http://www.trainweb.org/passengercars/Michael

OK, now don't any body get there hopes up too much but here are some screenshots over some HW and Harriman cars I have been working on. They're not skinned, and the models aren't done... Hopefully my Gmaxing and ACE making computer will be back on its electrons by next week. Among them are a 72ft Harriman RPO, 72' Coach, 60ft Baggage, 60ft Coach, 77ft Diner, 12-1 sleeper, and soon to be 10-1-2, 14-section "Night Fern", 80ft Horse-Baggage, 70ft Baggage, and "Mission Santa Ynez" type Solarium/Lounge/Sleeper. I haven't been able to find my TGA making software since the Southern California fires last year, so I don't know when I can make good textures for these cars.
That all being said, here's the pics. I've been fading around the out skirts for the last year or two. I'm busy with college and looking for work so these will get done if there is intrest out there from the community, if not then I'll just fade back into the steam from whence I came, like so many before me.
