What Did Microsoft Use? – image 1

To make the default Dash 9 horn. It sounds like it was made from a keyboard or something. It sounds nothing like the real thing. I know that is not actually the real horn, but I was just wondering what they did?

RE: What Did Microsoft Use?

Their techniques might be suspect, but I believe all Dash-9 sounds were taken from a locomotive that MS was free to poke around on. Details of the sound recording were once posted at their MSTS site - perhaps the info's still there.Cheers!

Yes - at one point I recall seeing something on their web site proudly proclaiming that they digitally sampled all of the sounds from the Dash 9, and all the steam sounds from the Flying Scottsman.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-03-04 AT 11:41 AM (EDT)

They did record off the real deal, the problem is this:If you go to the MSTS site, they have photos of them recording. The mistake they made was they opened the service doors and recorded just the engine. This makes no sense, as with the real thing you hear a lot of noises from the engine vibration and so on - you also do not hear the exhaust - meaning the sounds are very lethargic.Thankfully, the Geep sounds had enough of the residual noises (just 'dormant,' so to speak) that with some EQ, I was able to bring it all out again when I redid them. Unfortunately, I have not been able to do the same with the Dash-9, which sucks, because I wanted to re-engineer those as well. So, yeah - anyone have some decent GE recordings? Is it possible to download your GP38-2 sounds from somewhere?

RE: What Did Microsoft Use?

I was just wondering, what kind of horn do the "real" BNSF Dash9's have? The one in MSTS just sounds like a high-pitched jumble.

An American-tuned K3LA illustrating the later die cast finish. The K3H and K3L are primarily Canadian horns, but do occasionally show up on American railroads, notably on the BNSF 960-series Dash 9-44CW's. Subsequent new BNSF locomotives have come with the American-tuned K3LA.

The default SD40-2 horn sounds nothing like any train horn that I ever heard.

RE: What Did Microsoft Use?

Sawblade, easiest way is to use the "search" button in the file library, type in "horn", and narrow the search by selecting the "sound" section instead of searching all file sections. There are something like 30 horn replacements, off the cuff it looks like hornpack.zip or hornsv1.zip would be best for Dash 9s.Dejoh, actually you can mistake a Chicago bungalow, when it has a second floor it's not a bungalow, it's a two-flat.

What I was getting at is that the Dash 9 horn sounds like a horn made from a keyboard. Anyone who downloads some of the horns in the library can tell that it came from an original horn, but the default dash 9 horn sounds like it was digitally created. But the gp38 horn is ok.
