So I was browsing through the file library when I saw the small utility that would tweak settings to expand the drop down boxes in the game menu, making it a little easier to choose consists and such. I thought, what the heck, a quick fix to improve the game can't hurt so I downloaded and installed it. When I started MSTS it got about halfway through loading before the infamous send/don't send error message box appears. I have no clue where to even look for possible reasons for this melt-down so I thought I'd ask here. Thank you in advance for any help...:Matt:

Have you created or modified anything using this utility? If so, then you might want to move those files out to a temp folder and attempt to start MSTS and see what happens.Cheers!

RE: One Small Problem, Any Ideas?

Same here. One thing that's really helpful is being specific as to which utility you're talking about, so guys like Marc don't have to spin their wheels trying to figure it out. I assume you're talking about the HITW utility that expands some of the trainsim dropdown menu screens;tsintrfc.zip in the file library? On that assumption I looked in the www.howintheworld.com forums and found one previous gripe similar to this. No answer tho, so I clicked on the contact thing and shot an email off to Jak Fearon. According to Jak the poster "e-mailed me later to say that he had figured it out, which is why I never answered it in the forum. Now, though, I'm not sure what the answer is."That's my pet peeve, if people have a problem and later figure it out themselves for crying out loud POST what you did to fix it! There are zillions of threads on this forum where somebody posts a problem, troubleshooters suggest solutions, and the guy vanishes like Jimmy Hoffa. I don't really care about "thank you", what I'd like to see is "suggestion number three fixed it" so that future victims and troubleshooters know the answer and don't have to figure it out all over again.Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a rant, that's Dennis Miller's job. Anyway, I can't find any files in trainsim altered by this utility, so my guess is it's a registry key hack similar to the RE screen size hack. Jak's working on refreshing his memory on exactly what it does, so we should have an answer shortly.

RE: One Small Problem, Any Ideas?

Thank you for looking into this.
I agree that it's annoying when people get a problem fixed and they don't say how it was fixed. Maybe there should be a new forum dedicated to little problems like this and their solutions so people can look there before posting yet another plead for help. Just a thought. I couldn't see any changes to MSTS after installing either so I didn't know where to look, that's why I posted here.
Thanks again...:Matt:

RE: One Small Problem, Any Ideas?

Apparently it's not a registry hack, it's in 3 addon files and one replacement file. Go into the root folder of \Train Simulator;irunin.dat
irunin.ini
irunin.lngdelete or move those three files.
Next download and extract this;http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/413788b62b3274cb.zipAnd copy the activity.dat file to \Train Simulator\GUI\WIDGETS, yes to overwrites. That's the default KUJU activity.dat file that comes with the game, so assuming your problem isn't something unrelated to the menu quick fix that should cure it. If it does, the most likely explanation is you got a corrupted download (the old DOS based PKzip wouldn't extract a file at all if it was corrupted in the transfer, Winzip sometimes extracts corrupted files anyway). So try downloading it again and install, if it screws up trainsim again now you know how to fix it! It IS worth the trouble to try again, the drop down menus for explore route are much easier to find what you want.

RE: One Small Problem, Any Ideas?

If it is the "Extended MSTS Menus" from How in the World then it should have installed an "Un-install" option in START / Programs. If so then un-install it to see whether that fixes the problem. If it does then send me a message with your E-Mail address, your forum one may be out of date and I shall E-Mail you my copy ! O t t o

RE: One Small Problem, Any Ideas?

Well...
It turns out that an uninstall, re-download, and re-install did the trick for me. I'm guessing it was a corrupt download the first go 'round. What an improvement! Thanks for all your assistance folks. It goes to show that the simplest solution can often be the best, no matter how complicated the problem.:Matt:
