Now y'all don't jump on me for not being in the sound forum. I just installed Physics 4.7 into a Dekosoft Geep 38-2, and the sounds changed. So before I run off to the sound forum to work on a fix, I just want to know if it's broke.Used to be I would release the train brake and I'd get a hiss, and when the air fell to zero, and the brakes released, I'd get the air blast "bang" sound (I don't know how to best describe it, but you know what I mean - it's default). Now, with more realistic physics, when I relase the air on the train brake I get the loud air blast repeating over and over again as the pressure drops. If that's what I'm supposed to hear, I'll live with it. If not, I'm off to the sound forum to search for a fix.Can somebody help?ThanksMark

RE: Brake Sound with Physics 4.7

LAST EDITED ON Aug-30-04 AT 10:29 PM (EDT)

Hi:sms was not changed - I just cut and pasted the physics related lines into the file, overwriting what I had in those sections. It's related to the "Maxreleaserate" setting, I'm pretty sure, from previous experiments. But I think that setting is key to Bob's physics goal. So, if the banging sound is not normal, I'm going to have to plead with someone who knows something about discreet triggers etc. to help come up with a sound file compatible with realistic braking physics (if that makes sense). Thanks for the fast reply.Mark

RE: Brake Sound with Physics 4.7

What is the name of the sms file you are using with that engine? I will try to see if I have it since I have some Deko soft equipment, and then maybe come up with a plan for this. It may be that there is just no way to make it work "correctly" or as you remember it since now the brake release process takes more time (which I am guessing is the reason why the sound just keeps repeating. That may also then clog up the queue of sounds causing the bang sound to get forgotten or disregarded.Bryce

RE: Brake Sound with Physics 4.7

Hi Bryce:Thanks for taking a look at this. The sound file is in the common files package, and named "gp38Eng.sms" of all things. Here's the whole line: Sound ( "../../GP38_common/GP38SOUND/gp38Eng.sms" )Anxious to see what happens. I've also got the Canton RS1 (great engine, by the way) - same issue.I'm sure there are folks anxious to see what you come up with.Mark

RE: Brake Sound with Physics 4.7

Are you inside the cab or outside when you used to hear these sounds? The gp38Eng.sms is for outside sounds. I was assuming you were in the cab.Bryce

RE: Brake Sound with Physics 4.7

I played all of the sounds that the sms file calls for, and none of them contain a "bang". I'm wondering if you were just getting lucky and hearing a random sound from other than the engine's sms files. If you have a backup of the old .eng file before the physics changes, try putting it in. Listen to the sounds as you remember them with the bang. Then play the .wav files in the sounds folders for the Dekosoft engines. If you can identify the wav that you heard, let me know which one it is. Then maybe I can figure a way to make it play it. The big issue for me is that I am not sure what sound you are hearing since I don't remember hearing a brake-related bang in my travels.Off to bed now. I should be able to look at this tomorrow evening if you find the wav.Bryce

RE: Brake Sound with Physics 4.7

Thanks for your trouble, Bryce. The sound that keeps hitting me in the head is a default wav. There are three similar sounding wavs, which are:gp_airb_auto1
gp_airb_auto2
gp_airb_auto3By now this thread is belonging in the sound forum. I'll post a link.Mark

RE: Brake Sound with Physics 4.7

Go to the cab.sms file and find line:Discrete_Trigger ( 14 PlayOneShot ( 1 File ( "../../Common/airb_auto3.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) )Now you have some choices. You can either alias to the sound in the MSTS default Sound folder, or my suggestion would be to copy gp_airb_auto3.wav into the common sound folder of the engine where the line above is referencing. After you copy the gp_airb_auto3.wav file to that folder, change the line of the sms to read:Discrete_Trigger ( 14 PlayOneShot ( 1 File ( "../../Common/gp_airb_auto3.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) )I believe now when you release the train brake, it will play the bang you are expecting. You should no longer hear the whoosh sound (which I believe should only be heard when applying the brakes anyway). I have not tried this, and one problem I think I see coming is that it is going to repeat this sound until the brakes are fully charged on the train line to 90 pounds (or whatever you run). This may become annoying.Let me know how it works out.Bryce

RE: Brake Sound with Physics 4.7

Hi Bryce:Thanks again. I'm sorry I wasn't real clear (that's what happens when you play trains in the middle of the night). The line you suggested I look for (with airb_auto3.wav) is not in the sms file. The line you suggested that I create is already in the file, and the file you suggest I copy to the folder, is already there. The last two lines in your post describe the problem I'm trying to solve, and the reason for my post. You said "one problem I think I see coming is that it is going to repeat....This may become annoying."Annoying is an understatement. Assuming the sound should NOT repeat, my quest is to find out how to modify the file to stop the repetition.ThanksMark

RE: Brake Sound with Physics 4.7

Ok, now I see what you are saying. The only thing I can think of without having played with this particular engine is to choose a different .wav for it to play that is maybe a bit longer so that it does not repeat so much during the recharge of the train pipe. My understanding of how the sms file works is that even though it calls for playing only one shot, it will keep playing that one shot until the "event" that is calling for the one shot is completely done. There are lots of air and airbrake type sounds that might fit the bill or that at least will not make banging sounds. Simply rename the new .wav you like to the file you need and put it in the folder that the sms is referencing. You can also add a volume line:Volume ( 0.5 )as an example. Put this line after the priority: Priority ( 6 )
Volume( 0.6 )
Triggers ( 9.........This will also lower all volumes of all of the discrete triggers in that stream in the sms (which you may not want to do since some of the other brake sounds you may want to be loud.I think your best bet may be to change out your .wav file(s) to something you like better that does not "bang".One thing that I just thought of is to be sure you make these changes to all of the scalability levels of the sms. If you only change the highest level, and your slider is down, or if it just wants to choose a lower level, you will get the old sounds.Bryce

RE: Brake Sound with Physics 4.7

Thanks Bryce - I appreciate you taking time to review this with me. I may wind up changing the wav after all - I'd really like to change the sms file somehow, and "fix it right" - but I don't know if the code will allow. If I find anyting that works I'll let you know.Mark
