Hi Folks,
Its been awhile since I've had MSTS out of the box and I was wondering what the community might suggest as "must have" locomotives, routes utilities etc. Links appreciated if its not too much trouble. Thanks!

RE: What downloads would you suggest

Don't take this the wrong way...but these kind of post are....well, stupid. Let me explain why...I like running intermodel, diesels, on mountain routes. You might not.Do what so many others have, and go through the files area, and see for yourself. Thats half the fun, or do a search. maybe you only like CSX, so do a search for CSX, and it will display everything CSX. Nearly every download has a screenshot. Every download also has..or should have..a read me file, which details the instructions for installing said item. READ IT.Now as for routes, I enjoy running the ADFRR, CSX Funnel, Conrail Indy, Illinois Northern, Whitefish 2, or 3, or 5, Hoodoo Pass, CN Blackfoot, and Crawford Hill. All the above routes are real gems, highly detailed, and well worth your time. As for utilities...Kosmos (weather), XTracks (some routes require these to run, so you might as well download them), EngMod, and Route Riter. The last two are multi purpose tools that perform various functions.Chris Bogley

RE: What downloads would you suggest

I agree with Dave. I would suggest that you download a popular route or two of the type that you like and then some activities and the stockk needed to run them - and go from there. There have been some great routes released in the past few months.

RE: What downloads would you suggest

'Must have' utilities would have to include the already mentioned 'Conbuilder' as it's so much easier than the inbuilt Consist Editor. To this I'd add:
RouteRiter, which can do so many things to straighten up errors and inconsistencies in not only Routes, but also in consists and activities.
TrainStore - while your collection isn't likely to be affected yet by the consist limit, it will get there As for Routes, locos and stock, I'd agree with most others - it's a matter of taste. Find a route which takes your fancy, download it, find an activity, get the stock for it and go drive somewhere other than the default routes. If you liked the default Settle and Carlisle line and the Flying Scotsman, take a look at www.uktrainsim.com which has an enormous selection of UK based routes and rolling stock.
Their sister site www.eutrainsim.com caters for the continental European scene - and there's some impressive routes over there.
www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim has Australian routes and stock, as well as some marvellous tutorials on how to do just about anything in MSTS.The only real recommendation I'd make is to download the replacement Dash9 and gp38, redecorated in memory and honour of our dear departed Cyndi, the bnsflady - may she ever have her pumpkins to travel on.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-04 AT 05:04 PM (EST)

My 5 cents :UTILITIES:
*Route_Riter, a MUST, of course ! Up-to-date version, of course !
(now includes SView1.3, TGATool2, TView, soon TGATool2A/AceIt...)
*ConBuilder, sure
*Trainstore is useful, but not compulsory
*RouteControl (Demo), not very popular, but extremely helpful for hasslefree stock management.
*a good graphic tool (PhotoShop, PaintShop)
*SFM by Paul Gausden
*Unisearch3b, and TotalCommand, for the fiddlersROUTES:
a matter of taste !
-Train-sim.com, just here, offers an unequalled variety of US, from large & bulky to sweet narrow gauge western jewels, and a few foreign specials.
-avsim.com
-uktrainsim : british stuff of excellent quality (if you manage to get in...) -Also check (my) www.the-train.de, I modestly pretend that you should find pretty interesting & versatile stuff there, most compact and debugged.-railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/ for DownUnder regions-and other world sites :
*trenomania.it, excellent italian routes and stock
*several austrian, belgian, chinese, czech, danish, dutch, french, german, hungarian, russian, spanish, swedish, swiss... freeware sites (unfortunately occasionally labile by lack of means) Love and Peace

Sorry about my post

Sorry about the last post. I realised just after I posted that I had put down a list of downloads to suggest to make, rather than a list of stuff to get. Here's a real list:MLT Dash 9
Adam Wojcieszyk's replacement Acela (sorry if I speeled his name wrong)
The Sacramento Locomotive Works' Amtrak P32-8BWH
Tim Kent's VIA LRC coaches
GO F45
GO Double-Deck Coaches
NEC Pak 1 (was that right? I mean the one with the AEM-7's)

For a pretty good listing of routes, check out http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=list&forum=DCForumID13&conf=DCConfID1 . Obviously, not every route is there by any means, but it is a good place to start with some good general information to help you make up your mind where and on what you wish to run.RobertR ..
