RE: Ohio River RR, where is it?

Funny thing, model railroaders have an old saying, "There's a prototype for everything somewhere". I was standing on my back porch earlier today as a UP coal drag went by, and altho there were a few of the usual weatherbeaten hoppers, the majority of this train was brand spanking new fresh out of the paint shop coal hoppers with not a spot of grease, grime, dust or rust anywhere. To me it ain't realistic unless it's weathered, but it just proves sometimes it don't have to be weathered. When Rich was first working on "Bo Diddly", he was mulling over a name for the route, and I sent him an old book I found about a defunct shortline in that area. I forget the name, but it was either Ohio & West Virginia or West Virginia & Ohio, a road by one of those names actually did exist once upon a time. Ya never know!

RE: Ohio River RR, where is it?

Never can tell. The "Galena & Chicago Union" railroad started in downtown Chicago, built west about 10 miles to get some quick revenue for financing expansion, and was bought out by the Chicago & Northwestern. The C&NW named that line the "Galena Division", but it never got anywhere near Galena Illinois. Chicago & Northwestern, as you might imagine, had 3 lines out of Chicago, west, northwest, and north, but went primarily northwest. So where would you find the C&NW today? You won't, it was bought out by the Union Pacific in 1994.

RE: Ohio River RR, where is it?

Oh that's cruel Marc, really cruel, but funny I was thinking the same thing. The Ohio Route, BoDiddly, same thing can be found at AVSIM.com. It is anywhere you want it to be but basically is a fictional line that is very well done and one of the best, along with the PO&N fictional railroad in the sim. My advice, get it. You won't be sorry. I have run it for years and I still haven't seen it all and done all that can be done with it. It can be any time frame as well. There are batch files that can use old cars or new, different track styles, etc. There are also a great deal of activities for the route as well as two packs of steam locos or there are modern locos that were created for the route. You want it to be in Ohio, it can be Ohio. It looks like that area to me. It's one of the most downloaded routes of all time so my suggestion to you is download it and run it. You won't regret it!Tim"May the great BNSF 38 pumpkin carry you to your new home, Cyndi and may you engineer her for an eternity"

RE: Ohio River RR, where is it?

Although I prefer actual routes, I find myself spending a lot of time with Ohio Rail. It definitely has a "anytime-anywhere" feel to it such that you can run about any sort of equipment on it. Isn't a verison 11 in the works?CBB

It is somewhat fictional, being based on the area around Marietta, Cambridge, and Zanesville, Ohio.

RE: Ohio River RR, where is it?

As others have said, Rich Garber's route has some roots in southeastern Ohio. There were prototypical rail lines in that area, going from Marietta to Zanesville and Cambridge respectively, one a B&O, one a PRR. Rich did an interpretation of those lines. The real world Zanesville is about 60 miles east of Columbus, the real world Cambridge is about 20 miles or so east of Zanesville, about 50 or so miles west of Wheeling, WV.
There was an Ohio River RR, running along the WV side of the Ohio River between Wheeling and Huntington, WV.
There was a narrow guage railroad that ran through the area between the 1880's and the 1930's, called the Ohio River and Western.
There was a version 11 of Bodiddley, the Wheeling extension. From the last I heard, Rich got to within 20 rail miles of Wheeling and stopped. He got heavily involved with object creation, etc.. He decided to go in another direction, which lead to his Canton route. So, in a way the route is quasi-prototypical. It is roughly based on prototypical lines, but with an absolutely massive amount of Rich's imagination heaped in.

geez people... who cares?1) It's a DAMN GOOD route.
2) It's got good activities.
3) It's done by Rich Garber, which means it's seldom "flaky".
4) It's freelanced, so IMHO, it's better than reality.
5) It's realistic with regards to Digital Elevation Model data, so the landscape is believable.
I liked it enough to do a marquis poster... Ohio River RR, where is it? – image 5
