Has anyone installed this update yet. I did it a little while ago and the fps on my machine running Cascade Crossing went from the upper 30's to lower 50's as an average.Machine specs: AMD 64Fx51, ATI 9800 XT, 1 gb registered ram, 2 x 120 gb SATA drives set up on RAID 1. Running XT Home. Currently this machine is not attached to the net, only has Windows (basic install, no upgrades), office SB 2002 and needed drivers, as well as the programs that come with the CD and DVD drives, installed. MSTS basic and the patch with Cascade Crossing. No other routes, utilities or second party programs.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-14-04 AT 05:28 PM (EST)

Sharon,I installed DirectX 9.0c today and I seen a little improvement on my machine. I sort of took your advice over at MLT's forum. I was running Cascade Crossing's Long Haul pt.3 with Kosmos thunder and lightning storm. I had FPS at lower 20's before I install it and now it's in the upper 20's, very close to 30's. It will still drop down to teens due to heavy sceneries. My specs are in my profile. I was expecting more but, I guess my machine has it's limitations.Ken Plaza DirectX 9.0c – image 2

You will have to manually lock in an anisotopic and antialiasing setup, it resets by default to program controls the settings.

Hi all, I installed Direct X 9.0c today. My maximum FPS went from 59 to 60. An increase of 1 FPS. However on Cascades it went from 35 FPS to 45 to 50 FPS. Also from the cabview averaged 57 FPS. My Computer specs are in my profile

All of your FPS #'s sound good, but I still don't know about it, with limited Hard Drive space (I have a 40GB for my C, and a 20GB for my F, which is where my MSTS directory is).I've had an issue just getting SP 1(forgot to reboot after installing DirectX, I thought I could reboot both of them at once, less hastle...which turned out to be MORE hastle). So I just don't know if I should trust another Service Pack.-BeaverMon, AKA Ben-

You can do what I did, download the 9.0c by itself and install it. No SP2 needed. Just go to the microsoft site and its listed to the right of the screen as new downloads.

RE: DirectX 9.0c

I think the Hoosier is having fun with us here, "I can see it now". Question is, Ben, are your framerates better or not?Sylvester, "My maximum FPS went from 59 to 60", I just consulted with Tweety and he says 60 is the max you can get in trainsim, the FPS counter don't go any higher than that. He also says "BAD putty-tat!" Trick with comparisons is to select a route that gives fairly low framerates, turn on the FPS counter, and note the numbers in the cabview, #2 and #3 views, WITHOUT moving the train or rotating the camera views. If you pan and tilt the camera it introduces too many variables into the test. Then upgrade to whatever it is you're upgrading to (new video card, new drivers, SP2, DX 9.0C, whatever), and check the numbers from the same place, again without rotating the camera views. That's the only way to get a direct comparison.

Hi Jim !Is it right that DirectX-9+ is more aimed at the latest technology Graphic cards like the top ATI Radeon and nVidia FX and similar cards and would not do much for cards like my nVidia TI-4600 ? Just trying more recent than my 30.82 drivers for it caused nothing but problems ! Got DirectX-9.0a now.O t t o

I'm not "having fun" with anyone. I just haven't tried it yet. I needed to upgrade my video card drivers.I played the NEC Inductory Train Ride with 4X Antiscopic Filtering and lowest setting visibility. It runs great!!The only gripe I have is it seemed to lock up for a good 30 seconds, then it went to the loading of the route screen like nothing happened. It did it again when I quit the train ride too.I think it has to do with the Antiscopic Filtering. I'll try turning it off and see if it stops it.I had this set at the time;
Antializing settings: 4x (was Application Controlled by default)
Antiscoptic filtering: 4x (was Application Controlled by default)
Image settings: Quality (didn't change this)
Vertical sync: On (was Off by default)Ohh yeah, my video card is a nVidia GeForce FX 5200 (all this 1.6 GB computer can handle). The drivers have been upgraded (finally!!!) to 61.77.-BeaverMon is no more, Ben D is here to stay-

Ben,I have been running with the Antializing settings and Antiscoptic filtering set to "application control" in the video card driver. Yesterday I reset them both to 4x in the driver and MSTS wounld not load. Went back to "application control" and everything runs fine. Now I don't know if I need to do the start up switches to get by this, I am not sure. For now it runs fine where it is and much better fps, so I plan to stop tweeking.

RE: DirectX 9.0c

Hi all:I downloaded and installed 9.0c and found no problems but also found no improvements in framerates. I have a very object intensive low frame rate area in my route with 9-12 fps - really bad. After the download (and reboot) still 9-12. Using a geoforce 3 and AMD 1800 as I recall (I'm traveling with the laptop at the moment). I have excellent fps in other places - with or without 9.0c. Always in the 25-59 range, unless passing a high-poly mixed freight! I'll curious though - If MSTS is based upon DirectX 8 - why would this make a difference anyhow?Mark

RE: DirectX 9.0c

Hard to say. I was reading an article in PC magazine, guy claimed "everything" ran faster with XP service pack 2, but most of the PC magazine people are not gamers. So considering the source I have no idea if it will speed up games. I still haven't tried 9.0c yet, supposedly it comes with XP SP2, and since I intend to get that there's no point installing 9.0c seperately."If MSTS is based upon DirectX 8 - why would this make a difference anyhow?"Otto had a similar question; Hi Jim !Is it right that DirectX-9+ is more aimed at the latest technology Graphic cards like the top ATI Radeon and nVidia FX and similar cards and would not do much for cards like my nVidia TI-4600 ? Now how would I know that? Next time I do lunch with Billy Boy I'll be sure to ask him! All I can do is speculate, and it's gonna be ugly since I've always hated DirectX. "OpenGL" and 3Dfx's "GLIDE" are genuine 3D hardware accelerated video game platforms, DirectX is some stupid thing for displaying pie charts and graphs. Some geek at Microsoft decided it could be souped up to use as a 3D video game platform, and it STILL is nowhere near as suitable as OpenGL. Every single game I've ever had that supported both DirectX and OpenGL ran A LOT faster, smoother, and more stable under OpenGL than DirectX, but of course Microsoft would be more likely to make a LINUX version of one of their games than to make an OpenGL version. That said, every version of DirectX so far has shown at least some improvement (they had nowhere to go but up!) over previous versions, not just with new features for future games and video cards, but actual speed and stability improvements for existing games. Falcon 4.0, alas, didn't have OpenGL, it had a choice of GLIDE or DirectX. Without a Voodoo card you can't run GLIDE, so once 3Dfx folded and I became an Nvidiot I was stuck with DirectX. As I recall Falcon 4 was written for DX 6, and each subsequent DirectX version improved framerates slightly. Falcon 4 ran about 30 FPS on that AMD 800mhz/Geforce 2 machine with DX 6, currently it does 45FPS on the same system with DX 9.0, so Microstiffs definitely did something to improve the basic code.

The one I have seems to work OK.DirectX isn't that bad for 3D programming these days - it has come a long way since DirectX 5-6 and has probably overtaken OpenGL by now.

There have been a couple of reports of crashes when starting up SFV recently - it happened to me today too (after installing 9.0c)The error number is something like:
-2005530518 (&H8876086A)The solution was to reinstall DirectX 9.0c from the MS website again. This may affect XP users as 9.0c is included in SP2
