What is required to have an engineer and fireman appear in the cab of a locomotive? some of the locomotives that are done by Marc at 3DTrains have the engineer/fireman with an option to remove them (it looks like they are alphaed out to remove them). Is it a 'freight animation' entry that is needed? If so, are two needed for both figures?

RE: Engineer/Fireman in cab

If you are into fine steam locomotives, check out Jon Davis' engines in the file library. Most of the more recent ones have engineer and fireman in the cab.

Exactly. Try and ask them a direct question and watch them ignore you.
You could try and make your own figures and then add to any engine via a freight animation tag in the eng file as an option.

Hmmm...Ask anyone here, and you may find that I'm pretty open about what I do and how I go about things. I don't tell all, but I'm more than willing to give helpful hints, shortcuts, and assist in most situations.Half the fun is sharing what I know - the other half is keeping secret what I know. Cheers!

RE: Engineer/Fireman in cab

I knew this post would show up before too long. I've learned a great deal from 3DTrains in this forum (and on their forum)! That whole peice about passenger car SDK's on their website was pretty generous too.And another payware vendor, Maple Leaf Tracks, just gave the forum a solution to signal visibility. I think the payware folks are huge contributors to the knowledge base in this hobby - and I think they're quite generous with their knowledge. Just another opinion to chew on.Mark

Just because I had a bad experience with one payware vendor doesn't mean they're all the same, I was just venting....

RE: Engineer/Fireman in cab

They are freight animations.
Only one is allowed per ENG file, so the two figures are a singe model.I have produced several double crew sets for my UK and Australian locos (and a set of guards as freight animations for the caboose)With a few adjustments in the positions, using the shape file manager, you can make them fit most steam models. Anyone is free to make use of these models - over at UK trainsim, they are available as sets for many of the locos.
see the downloads section in the second link in my sig.

RE: Engineer/Fireman in cab

Unfortunately not at the moment.I've been asked several times about this in the UK too
- we just need a single seated figure, can't be too hard to do. I'll get around to doing one at some point. The freightanim technique doesn't always work with diseasels, particularly if TSM was used to build it, the alpha channels can obscure the drivers shape.

RE: Engineer/Fireman in cab

Mine are added directly to the model, and as others have noted, they are removed/added via alpha channels in their respective textures. And as Paul stated, he's got a set of crew figures (in various configs and poses) that you should be able to add quite easily to just about any locomotive you desire. Cheers!
