Is there an "easy" method of deleting old consists from MSTS without getting all the error messages in MSTS consist editor thereafter? I have deleted using consist editor and then get error messages that it can not find this and that next time I start it up. Same with some of the traffic pattern files and player files, they pop up again even though I deleted them. I can delete the activity so that it no longer shows up in the MSTS start-up menu but when I go to MSTS con editor I still get the errors and the consist shows up again in the editor somewhere or simply says it can not find such and such.I do have Con Editor and Route Riter etc but have not been able to figure out how to completly clean out files with them either. I realize if I use the consist in other activities it will always look for it but I have deleted the activities that use the ones I do not want anymore. This all get complicated!!! Is there a way to go into windows explorer and look in various folders that might have a certain consist in them and delete it?Dave
Hi Dave,I would not use Explorer. You may end up with all kinds of errors.Read and learn the Route_Riter manual. Mike has done a wonderful job on this program and manual. You can get up-dates here:http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/Route_Riter/index.htmlRegards,Waldo
Hi Dave,Activities look for services (player and ai traffic) and rolling stock (loose consists).Services look for consists.Consists look for rolling stock. If you are getting a consist error it is because a service in you services folder uses that consist. Until the service is deleted or the consist exists, you will get the error. If you are getting a rolling stock error (.eng or .wag) you have a consist in the consist folder that uses it or you have an activity that uses it in a loose consist. Until the service or activity is deleted or the rolling stock exists in the correct folder you will get the error. (Note this error can also occur because of an error in the rolling stock file if it exists in the correct folder.)One way to find out which consists, services, and rolling stock that are not being used is to use Train Store. If you unstore all your routes and activities (not Unstore everything) Train Store will unstore only those services, consists and rolling stock that are needed. If you then look in the Train Store storage folder and open the consists folder you find the consists that are not needed by any of your activities. The same is true for the services, trainsets, and paths folders in the Train Store storage folder. As with everything you do on a computer make backups in case something goes wrong. If you have plenty of storage space you'll probably find little need to delete unused services, consists, paths or trainsets because the will remain stored and not affect the sim. The first three take up very little space. If you are worried about using Train Store, I have used it from its inception and have not lost a single file using it. Totals Routes: 235 Activities: 2,529 Services: 8,816 Paths: 8,778 Consists: 6,960 Stock Items: Engines: 3,760 Wagons: 7,097 Total: 10,857 Regards,Eric
The ConBuilder is probably more appropriate for what you want because it can tell you whether a Consist is wanted by an Activity or not.Removing a Consist which is not required by an Activity should not cause any problems other than perhaps create "Orphan" Rolling Stock items in the TRAINSET folders which have nowhere to go ! Otto,Just like you can select an engine or wagon, and click CONSISTS to tell what consists use that piece, I'd like to see the same thing for a consist.- Select a consist, and ask what activity it is used in. Currently, I think, you have to go thru each route/activity, selecting it to have CB tell you what consists are used in THAT particular item. That takes a long time, and perhaps some paperwork, to get to the one you're really looking for.Does CB currently do what I asked, and I'm just missing it?Thanks, Ted
Thought that the CB "Consist making part of Activities" option would do that, Ted.Never checked it out because I use my UltraEdit-32 to find Consist names and Loose Consist items by letting it do an external search in all Route Folders Activities Files.Seems that neither the Route Riter nor the ConBuilder have such a useful option, going through all Routes Folders, looking for Consists used by Activities ! O t t o
Since CB already has Activities / Consists /Stock assembled, it just needs sorting on CONSISTS, so as to when a consist is selected, like a piece, it'll show the activity in a window, like the "consists for pieces".Perhaps an enhancement?T
Thanks everybody, Guess I better just make some time to read the BIG manual on Train Store!I do have lots of hard drive space but it just bugs me to have stuff hanging around that I really don't need on there.Dave
