Hello All: I installed this engine using the self installer and its 49 mixed freight consist. Using Con Builder, I assembled a passenger consist using the NE HVWT cars from the library, also having its own installer. However, the consist does not appear in the consist folder. I added info in Con Builder to identify the file.My question: Can consists be added to the NALW Big Boy 4005 or is the 49 car mixed freight included consist, the only consist that will appear? ThanksChris

Chris: Using ConBuilder you can create a consist using any engine and any cars. When you run the sim, the consist will show up under the LEAD ENGINE name in the engine selection list. In the case of the BigBoy, don't forget that this engine has two .eng files, front & back. Don't forget the tender. Cyndi
Hi Cyndi:Well, something is not going correctly here as after building & identifying the consist in Con Builder, it is not appearing in the consist list after selecting the Big Boy in the Engines section. In Con Builder, I have selected the 4-8-8-4 NALW Big Boy as my engine, and then the tender, and then added the NE HVWT cars. Still nothing shows up in the consist folder. Chris
Chris,As Cyndi said, there are 2 parts to the Big Boy, in ADDITION to the Tender (so 3 parts total counting the tender). You probably only have one of the 2 parts of the locomotive itself, or if you have both, then they may be in the wrong order.BTW - this had to be done this way as MSTS had no other means to properly do an articulated engine...----------- BUZZ -----------
Chris: Lets start at square one: Ust the TEST ENGINE function of ConBuilder to test all the files of your Big Boy. Remember there TWO sections of the engine, so test them both. Clean bill of health? Now put the tender and the cars through the Test Wagons function. If everything is ok there, use the TEST CONSIST function to check the consist itself.Build a NEW consist. From the ENGINE list click on the FRONT section of the Big Boy and then REAR section. From the wagon section add the tender. Do not add any other cars yet. Click on SAVE CONSIST and exit CB. Open the sim and verify that the Big Boy is there and operates ok. It should be by itself with no cars attached. Now open CB and then open your new consist. Add the cars that you want. Click on RENUMBER the SAVE. Open the sim and your consist should be there. When you are typing in a new consist name in CB, the top window is how the consist will be listed in the CONSIST folder. The name you type in the bottom window is the name that will be displayed on the MSTS SELECT CONSIST list.Cyndi
In conbuilder you have to select bigboy part two (B) then bigboy part one (A) and then bigboy tender and then the cars you want to use.
All ways remembering BigBoy 4023 and her run through Green River Wyoming on train 359 a 600 car mixed freight with a yellow Union Pacifc caboose on the rear.
OK Cyndi, I'll follow your instructions to a tee!I think one of the areas with which I have an issue is that you say the Big Boy actually contains three different sections. Two engine parts and a tender. Perhaps this explains why I got an error message telling me the couplers between the engine and tender were not compatible. I only entered "one" engine and "one" tender in the Con Builder string. From what I gather from you and Buzz, it should have been two engines and a tender which would actually give me one complete Big Boy steam engine. Will give it a try tonight and again thanks for everyone's help. Feels like I'm back in elementary school Chris
Chris when in doubt look at the one consist that has the BB working and model yours on it... By that I mean install the BB components in the order they are in the example consist...Chuck Schneider Chief Cook, Bottle Washer and (Virtual) CEO
