Aug-26-01, 06:24 AM (EST) "Finally got the tsunpacker to work! (Useful tips enclosed)" So, after 5 weeks I finally got the tsunpacker to work! Here's how:Last night I downloaded the "tsunpacker registry fix" from trainsim.com. I activated it and went to open a 'packaged activity', but I got the same old error message, ie, "failed to open..". So I then went into the Trainsim/Utils folder, highlighted the file that I wanted to install (in this case the file was called The Race.Act), pressed the Shift key**, and at the same time right clicked with the mouse, selected "Open With", then clicked on "Other". Then I navigated to Trainsim/Utils folder and highlighted the tsunpacke exe file. Clicked ok, and The Race file unpacked itself. (**Note: I had to use the 'Shift' key and 'right mouse' in order to access the "Open With" option, otherwise I just got the same old "failed to open" message). I then went back into the Trainsim/Utils folder and highlighted the activity APK file (ie, in this case called The Race.APK) and repeated the above procedure, ie: I pressed Shift, and at the same time right clicked with the mouse, selected "Open With", then clicked on Other, then navigated to Trainsim/Utils folder and highlighted the tsunpacke exe file. Clicked ok, and The Race.APK file unpacked itself. And within minutes I was racing another Flying Scot I have to go through this procedure to get all activities installed, but at least now I can.(Alert>>: Some of my problems started when I followed the (enclosed) instructions for editing the tsunpack.exe file path. This info is useful, but gives the impression that the Packaged Activity" file association should be deleted - which unfortunately I did, and had to reinstall the whole game as a result. Ive therefore added a warning in the enclosed info, not to delete this file association.Cheers,Tin--How to unpack Activities (info sourced from Forum archives)
1. Place the .apk activity file in your Train Simulator "Utils" folder, usually c:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\Utils.
2. In Windows Explorer, drag and drop the .apk file on to tsunpack.exe.
3. When prompted "Unpackage new activity to route .....?", say yes. The activity is now installed and can be accessed from the Drive A Train menu next time your start MSTS.
You can also find the file in the directory you downloaded too and right click then choose open.
Note: Activities that DO NOT include an APK file must be installed by following the directions included in the activity's "readme" file.
IF THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS RESULT IN AN ERROR, PLEASE CONTINUE BELOW: -------------------------------------------------------------------- Workaround for those unable to use the included tsunpack utility
Published by user "ulteriormodem" at www.train-sim.com Step-by-Step Instructions: 1. Open a folder with a packaged activity in it. 2. From the tool bar at the top of the folder select "View" then "Folder Options". 3. Select the "File Types" tab. 4. Scroll down the list of Registered file types until you find "Packaged Activity". 5. Highlight the Packaged activity and press the Remove button. (BUT DONT ACTUALLY DELETE THE FILE). Don't let the warning box scare you were going to fix that in the next few steps. 6. Now select the "View" tab of the folder options. 7. Look under the Advanced settings for a check box labeled "Hide file extensions for known file types". Make sure this check box is NOT checked. 8. Click the okay button and you should be back at the folder. 9. Look in the folder contents for a file with the .apk extension and right click on it. Select the "open with" option. 10. The open with dialog box should open. Select the "Other" button. 11. Now navigate your way to "C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Train Simulator/Utils/tsunpack.exe". Highlight that and click okay. You will return to the open with dialog box. 12. Press the Okay button of the open with dialog box. You will recive an error message stating the all too familiar "Failed to open package". Now dont cry were almost done. Click the okay button and you should return to the folder again. 13. Select from the folder tool bar "Views" then "Folder Options" and select the File Types Tab. Look familiar ? Good. There is one change though you will now find a listing for APK File. 14. Highlight that listing and press the "Edit" button. 15. In the Actions box high light the "open" and press the edit button. You should
see "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\UTILS\tsunpack.exe" in the Application used to perform action box. If not lather rinse repeat (steps 1 through 14). 16. Now edit the listing in the App. used box and add the "%1" to the end. Don't forget the space. It should now read "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\UTILS\tsunpack.exe" "%1" press the okay button. 17. Press the close button for the edit file type box. 18. Press the close button for the Folder options box. 19. Now two click the .apk file. You should get a box that says "Unpackaged Activity to ..." Guess what ! It now works ! I must post the usual disclaimer about not accepting responsibility for anything that may happen by performing the actions here in. However, this little exercise should be relatively harmless. All the above is with thanks from ulteriormodem and was previously published on this site. Thanks as well to Rob Easterday who has made some really fine activities available for download.--- Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

(Useful tips enclosed)" After making the % addition to the unpacker, and associating APK with the unpacker, I simply open a zip file and click on the APK and let it run. No problem at all, no placement of files. I do it all from the Winzip window.bob Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Hi Ergo,I'd tried all that, but I could only get it to work by the above method. Some of these Activities are real fun. Others just real mad!!

They let you check the activity before you open MSTS. Very nice.Did you associate APK with the unpacker? If you did, there should be no problem clicking on an APK and getting it to run.bob Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I tried virtually every way, assisted by different people over the past few weeks. But in the end, this is the only way to get the tsunapcker to work on my system. But I'm ok now thanks. The MS Buddy etc, arent they payware?Tin Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
