I've been adding routes to my microsoft simulator since it first came out(32 of them)and have had very few problems with them working for the most part untill I was required to put the new version of xtracks (v3.10) and the kosmos add on. after I installed these two programs, I began to notice that most of my activities would lock up before they got loaded. I had backed up the whole game to dvd (all 10GB of it), and restored it back to what I thought would make it run the same as before except that now when I try to reinstall all of the routes beyond the default routes, that train simulator isn't recognizing any of them. what am I missing? I thought that restoring all the years of work that I've got in this would bring it back to normal operation. If anybody has a suggestion I would surely appreciate whatever help I can get because this is sure driving me crazy.

RE: imported routes quandry

One thing you might check is if the files are marked as "Read Only".
When you copy files to a cd (I assume the same is true for dvd), they are marked as "Read Only". With that attribute checked, the sim can't read them.
There's an easy way to remove the "Read Only" attribute, but I don't recall exactly how. Maybe someone else can chip in here.Hawk

Last night I heard an old freight whistle blow, as I was sleeping warmly in your bed-And it told me "Boy, it's time that you was packin' up to go.", but I smiled and shook the leavin' from my head.

Hello! In order to remove the READ-ONLY attributes from all the Train simulator files, open a COMMAND PROMPT window and execute the following commands:- CD C:\GAMES\MSTS (it is only an example ... you have to position yourself under the MAIN Train Simulator directory)- ATTRIB -R *.* /S (this command resets all the READ-ONLY attributes in the main directory and in the all subfolders as well)- EXIT (in order to return to WINDOWS)These commands work perfectly in almost all the WINDOWS O.S. including XP.Roberto

But remember when working at the Command Prompt that all Folder and File names longer than 8.3 and having Spaces in their names need to be entered like this:Attrib -R "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\"*.* /sNo need to "Change Directory/Folder" doing it this way. You will notice that "READ" Attributes can not be set for HIDDEN MSTS files such as numerous Thumbs.db. B.t.w. what is their purpose ?I prefer doing it this way, having noticed using the Folder "Properties" method that it still indicates Read Only ticked afterwards !B.t.w. Hawk, a "Read Only" whatever can be read but not written to.
"HIDDEN" can not be touched, not even copied. Attempting Copying will prompt "This is a hidden File, do you want to continue ?"O t t o

RE: imported routes quandry

Hi Michael !Restoring from Back-Up media to the Folder MSTS was installed into will carry on from where MSTS was when it was Backed-Up. Good idea to delete the contents of the re-installed MSTS folders before replacing it with the Back-Up in case some files do not get overwritten. All "READ ONLY" files should be copied from whatever Media they are copied from, their contents being "Read" in order to be copied. But the receiving Folder/s must allow being written to ! Folders can be "Attributed" too ! Running the "Remove -R" function in whichever way will be required after copying from any other than Hard Drive Media, I think DVD included. In any case it would do no harm to do it !O t t o

Otto,
Thanks for clarifying that. I knew it was something along that line, just wasn't sure. I just knew they wouldn't work with Read Only checked.Hawk

RE: psssst....

if your operating system is an XP flavor , right click the trainsim folder , choose properties , uncheck read only , yes to apply to all subfolders."I do what my Rice Krispies tell me to do"

Otto, I think authors/creators of Route-Riter, Eng-Mod, Con-bulder, Train-Store, PO&N, XTracks, Train-Sim, and the 'Bridge, Barn etc. Man' (Ron P) (not in any particular order and along with a few others not coming to mind at this senior moment) should be officially 'Knighted' at the 'round-table' or something of that nature. Where would we be without them? Probably doing something else RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com
