HelloI downloaded these files called GENPAKS 1 thru 4. They are Genesis locos. After I downloaded GENPAK 3 when I booted up I got two error messages:"Continue? Error reading train database file. File: Trains\Trainset\AMD_103\viaAMD103.eng"And:"Continue? Error reading train database file. File: Trains\Trainset\VIA_Coach\VIA_One.wag"When I downloaded GENPAK 4, the first error message seemed to be resolved when I moved all the eng files into the new AMD103 folder. The error message about the .wag file keeps coming up. It makes the game close sometimes. I tried writing to the designers ("NALW@cox.rr.com" & "ctober1@home.com"), but my messages were sent back "undeliverable." I read as many FAQ's as I could find but didn't stumble upon a solution. Is the problem that the file is not in the right folder? Could it be the file's name or the name of the file in which it is located? Could it be a matter of case size?Hope this isn't too much of a dumb newbie dilemma. Thanks in advance for any help I get. The rest of the game and my new engines work fine. Dave N.S.

RE: Error Reading Database File (s): MSTS

Hi Dave,Welcome to the forum.
We don't like the word dumb. The error you are getting is because there is some rolling stock missing.
Have you read the readme with the files to see if the VIA coaches are supplied or you have to download seperately?
The file 'may' be in the wrong folder. If you download ConBuilder or Route Riter, they can both find out what the problem is.Derek

Actually Derek on that one there is a "Stray Consist" with something about the VIA LRC in the title...

RE: Error Reading Database File (s): MSTS

Thanks gentlemen! For the past five hours I have been deleting, renaming, dragging, and dropping every conceivable combination of files I thought might right the error. About ten minutes ago I think I figured out what was wrong. Most of the files I downloaded so far allowed me to randomly name the folder I placed them in inside the TRAINSET folder. Evidently this is not the case for these LRC coaches. I did a HDD search of all files with the word VIA. When I did that I saw I had two very similar files: VIA Coach and VIA_Coach. The former was almost 2,000 kb larger than the latter. So I deleted the latter entirely and lo and behold the game stopped giving me those error messages. Now when I build longer freight trains, however, I am being told my system doesn't have enough memory. So it's on to the next boggle. I guess I like boggles, huh. Can't just play the game as is. Gotta tamper. Rod Serling often said that there are some things a man should not tamper with. Hmmm. What I most want is to edit the .eng files so the bell and the horn operate separately. I found the procedure in an FAQ but it wasn't clear which program is used to open an .eng file or where they tend to reside in the program folders. I also would like to swap out a horn or two entirely. And are MSTS Viewliners out there somewhere? Thanks for your helpful responses. I gotta locate those other progs you mentioned, Conrite (consist) and RouteRite (route)?Wonder what boggles and tribulations await me when I attempt my next bold feat of daring-do! To add a new route!Dave

RE: Error Reading Database File (s): MSTS

Dave,Wordpad is used to edit .eng files. It comes with Windows, so you should have it on your system.
The .eng files reside in the folder with the rest of the trains. For example, the default GP38's .eng file (assuming you installed MSTS in the default directory) resides in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\Trains\Trainset\GP38".As for MSTS Viewliners - they are under construction. Do a forum search and you should see some screenshots of what we have so far.Hope that helps!----------- BUZZ -----------Error Reading Database File (s): MSTS – image 2

I adjusted the horns and bells on all the engines I downloaded to operate independently. It was easy enough. I changed the "1" to a "0" where the .eng file reads "Horn Triggers Bell." However, I was unable to figure out how to do the same thing with MSTS' original engines. I found command lines reading Horn ( 0 1 0 ) and Bell ( 0 1 0 ).Do I change the sequence of these numbers to make the horn and bell operate independently? Do the bell and horn operate together on real engines?Dave N.S.

DO NOT EDIT THOSE LINES!Get engmod from the file library and use it. YOu can change lines in ALL the eng files at one time. RTFM!Kevin Arceneaux

I thought the "F" in RTFM meant something other than "fine!" Gee! My feelings aren't as hurt now! At first I was, you know, sort of offended!Anyway, I asked what the "M" referred to in this instance, because I am wondering if there is an actual *manual* (as in "RTFM") which decribes how to stop the horn from triggering the bell and other tricks of the trade. For example, does the Sybex book I saw advertised focus on programming topics? Anyway, I thought I'd been doing a pretty good job of trying to find the answers on my own. Maybe I didn't do the keyword search properly. I did manage to partilally learn what I wanted to know by reading the posts & FAQ's, without doubt. Your advice helped, too.So! EngMod, ConBuilder, RouteRiter... And only edit MSTS loco horn and bell with the EngMod program. I'll get these programs just as soon as I get an available node. Trainsim.com has been fully occupied for nearly 20 hours now. I haven't been able to log on to the files section. I just keep getting the "All nodes are busy message." A first class membership might be in order, evidently. Or maybe it's me. Maybe they don't want me coming around. Maybe something I said or did put me in a bad light. Like someone who's been branded as a 'bad seed', maybe I'm an outcast now and the only problem is that I'm the last one to know. Maybe I've become someone who the people in charge feel should be locked out and kept away, because I'm an 'undesireable element' such as The Beach Boys were considered to be by the first President Bush. But I disgress. Those programs are all here in Trainsim.com, right? I'm sure they're good tools, but in what ways are they better to MSTS Activity Editor? Thx Much!Dave

There are "fine" manuals available! They're right here in train-sim's file section. Not FAQ's, but actual manuals! I stumbled on 'em this morning. I downloaded a few. Guess I'm on my way!I downloaded RouteRiter, plus Rollins 1-IV, and Rollins Version 2 and 3 as well. I also downloaded some activites for the route. I'm a bit hesitant about attempting to install them. These are some of the files that try men's souls, I'm afraid!Once I give these manuals a once-over, I'm going to build a freeware route including Grand Central Terminal and the three main Metro North routes into the suburbs to Poughkeepsie, Wassaic, and New Haven, including the New Canaan, Danbury, and Waterbury branches, plus the Shore Line East and The Naugatuck Railroad. I'll probably be busy with this project for a week or two. Talk to you then! (Just kidding! I figure installing the Rollins files will be enough a challenge for this here newbie for now!)Thanks again for your patience and advice.Dave N.S.

Just for the record the NALW engine files were the easiest for me to download and install.I got timed out three days in a row. I must have downloaded over 200 engines and cars of all types. I also got all these tools and guides and a huge route in 4 parts with two extra activity add-ons.I discovered after unzipping that about a third of the files can't be installed until I get yet more additional files. The requisites aren't always listed in entirety. The rest of the files, for the most part, required me to paste them into MSTS manually. This took a long time and led to some silly but perplexing errors, but they all eventually worked. The NALW locos were the easiest for me to install, because they installed themselves. They work well right out of the box, so to speak, and they look and sound good, too! Hard to believe all this stuff is free!Incidentally, where can I get a cab view for these two Amtrak E8's? I was just blasting down the corridor in them earlier and they were great! Their horns are excellent! I had no interior cab view, however. Maybe I didn't install the files right?I never got around to installing Rollins Pass today. Procrastinated. What's this thing about Xtracks and NewRoads? I installed XTracks. I created a "X" shortcut on the desktop, but clicking it brings up an Windows fax and image viewer. I think maybe I didn't install it right? New Roads looked really complicated. And I think I need an activity unpacker and its fix, too.Gotta go over the read me's again. If tonight's E8 ride was any indication of where all this downloading is going, I'm psyched!Dave N.S.

Actually, NEWROADS is simple. Copy the shapes from it and from Xtracks into Train Simulator/Global/Shapes. Copy tsection.dat into Train Simulator/Global.PS: The route you mentioned has a major upgrade coming soon.Don
