I am running Windows XP, Pentium 4, 3GHz with ATI Radeon 9200, 128MB. This is a new computer and I have done a full new install of Trainsim. I can set the resolution in the Display options to a higher resolution, but Trainsim still runs in low res.I also had this problem on the old computer with Nvidia GE Force 4 card.Any help would be appreciated.Regards,Ed21

RE: Screen Resolution

MSTS does not listen to Windows settings. In MSTS go into OPTIONS. This is where you set the screen resolution. With your system you should be able to set it at 1280 x 1024 32 bit.

RE: Screen Resolution

When I referred to Display options, the settings were changed in MSTS through Options, Display to various resolutions, such as 800 x 600 32 bit, etc. MSTS still runs in low resolution. The highest displayed on this screen is 1024 x 768 16 bit. Regardless of the settings made, it still runs in low res.Thanks,Ed21

Sounds like it's probably a display driver issue to me. I know for a fact the game will run at 1600 x 1200 x 32 bit on my machine.

O.K., Ed !Now lets try and Start / Run / Dxdiag and see what that reports after having done all it's tests ! O t t oP.S.: If your Desktop Display Properties let you set the Screen Display to 1024x768x32 then there is no logical reason for MSTS not to do likewise in Options / Display / Display Resolution !

RE: Screen Resolution

Desktop resolution is set to 1280 x 1024 32 bit. Dxdiag provides the following:System tab indicates DirectX 9.0bDirectX files tab indicates "No problems found"Display tab indicates "No problems found" - All DirectX features are enables, DirectDraw and Direct3D tests function properly.Sound tab indicates "No problems found" - DirectSound test functions properly. No problems were found under any other tabs and all tests functioned properly.I have done all this before and am still at a loss. Uninstalling and re-installing MSTS does not help, either.Thanks.Regards,Ed21

RE: Screen Resolution

HI,Be sure your monitor can support the higher resolution. I had an old CRT that would not let me use 32 bit in MSTS....got a new monitor, and now I can. MSTS seems to know what your monitor can and can't handle.Bryce

RE: Screen Resolution

May sound simple but It is a possible problem.
Are you clicking "Save" after changing the resolution?
I've done that a few times. lol
I also find that sometimes you have to exit trainsim just after changing options or they don't take.
hope that helps a bit"I do what my Rice Krispies tell me to do"

RE: Screen Resolution

Ed:I am not familiar with the ATI cards as I have a GeForce. But I run
1600x1200x32 and the resolution is terrific. Before I can use that resolution, however, I had to override the default refresh rates in Windows by using the Nvidia software for the GeForce. Although my computer is high resolution, I had to set my refresh rate to 72 Hertz for 1600x1200x32. I assume ATI has similar software. If you can do this, MSTS will allow that high resolution.Brad

The monitor can support the resolutions (Samsung 19" 997DF). MSTS does not display all of the possible resolutions the monitor supports. I do save the settings in Options, Display in MSTS. I have exited the program after saving settings, then when restarted, checked the settings again and they have been saved.I tried changing the refresh rates to a several different ones to the point that screen flicker was obvious but it made no change in MSTS. Also tried changing a number of parameters in dxdiag - still no luck. Thanks for the help - maybe I'll get it someday Regards,Ed21

RE: Screen Resolution

One more question, Ed, before I have to give up !If your Desktop Display is set to 1024 x 768 x 32 and you go into MSTS Options and select this setting and SAVE it what does the MSTS' display look like. Can you do a Screenshot of a Route's scene and post it here ?What dates are your TRAIN- and LAUNCHER.EXE files ?O t t oScreen Resolution – image 2

Ed,don't forget to Delete the "Train Simulator" folder as well !

I don't know what version MSTS CD you got. If it is the original one then you need the 1.1 and/or 1.2 updates from the MS-MSTS web site. That's why I asked you for the dates of your MSTS EXEs. There was a Graphics Cards issue with the first release. Not sure whether the 1.2 covers the 1.1 as well, never needed the 1.2 myself.O t t o

>Not sure whether the 1.2 covers the 1.1 as well, never
>needed the 1.2 myself. V1.2 never touched the train.exe files! It just merely added some extra rolling stock and activities for them. So V1.1 update is important!

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

Resolution is good, now. Have seams in cab view and text is not real clear. Can't resolve these problems with troubleshooter. Seems I can't upload screenshots. I'll tried JPG but got an error message. I play around with it and see if I can upload screenshots later.I had original installation on "D" drive, which is my largest drive. Installed on "C" this time - don't know why that would make a difference.Anyway, it's gettin' better. Thanks for all the help.Regards,Ed21

Ed,if you are running a Firewall when Online to the Forum, the latter will not let you upload anything until you switch if off temporarily.A different drive should make no difference to Graphics Quality, speed of collecting data for it perhaps, if it is fragmented on the disk and MSTS sits in a large partition.O t t o

RE: Screen Resolution

Well, after lotsa effort and re-installing, everything in MSTS is working now. Got hi-res screens with good frame rates. Guess I lost all my activities that I had made along with some rolling stock since the new installation does not recognize them even though they are on the hard drive. Editor will not load the activities either. If I didn't enjoy this sim so much, I would have just deleted it and given up.Don't know what the original problems were or what solved them, but it seems to be working fine now. Thanks, guys for all your help. I really appreciate it.Best regards,Ed21

Ed,If the Route's folder has all the .act, .pat, .srv & .trf files in it's ACTIVITIES, PATHS, SERVICES & TRAFFIC folders then I can see no reason for them not to show them if the Route itself does !What have ConBuilder and ROUTE RITER got to say about that ! O t t o

RE: Screen Resolution

Looks like some files were corrupted when copied over the network. Program crashed last night, along with some other files that had been copied. Re-installed MSTS and re-copied activity and rolling stock files. Appears that all is working, now. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a while and see how it does.Graphics are great, now, and frame rates are good. Still don't have a clue as to what the original graphics problems were caused by when it was first installed. Thanks to all for the help, I really appreciate it. Regards,Ed21

RE: Screen Resolution

EdInteresting problem, and sorry but I've only just seen this post. I have an AMD 3000+ CPU married to an ATI 9200 with 256MB memory. I've always been able to run at 1280x1024x32...However, I did try using the FSAA and anisotropic filtering the other day and just having the tags in the start line gave me resolution problems with blurring and unremovable cab-seams. I tried playing with all the settings in the ATI suite of programs but the only thing that cured it was not bothering with FSAA or anisotropic filtering at all which is a shame as anis filtering does make a hell of a difference.Perhaps your old setup had these tags in?

RE: Screen Resolution

Really don't know - I did a full install on this computer and had problems from the start. This was actually the first program I installed and didn't change anything in the initial setups that came on the computer. I'm at a total loss as to what caused the initial problems, but (at least for now) everything seems to be working great. Thanks to all for their help and suggestions.Regards,Ed21
