"RE: Thomas the tank engine ready to roll" LAST EDITED ON Aug-24-01 AT 11:11 PM (EST)Yeah, ya posted it, then ya had to go and tell everyone so it took me three hours to get thru to download it. Nice work, John. Mike is currently playing with it non stop, altho there's a little problem on his computer causing it to lock up if he stays in an outside view. You get any feedback, here's what happened and what I did:
My system
AMD Athlon 800
512 Mb ram
Geforce 2 64mb AGPHis system
AMD K6-2 450
128 Mb ram
Voodoo 3-2000 16mb PCIOn my system it ran flawlessly, and after testing it I put it on his, and it promptly locked up after about 2 minutes. So I tested some other engines, including your pacific (larger shape files and I'm sure a bigger polygon count) which also locked up, but took longer to do so than thomas. Mike is a high functioning autistic, so his memory is as iffy as the rest of his mental processes, so I couldn't really get an answer as to how long it's been doing this. His video and audio options were still set to the default for his setup, and the wierd thing that I found was that turning DOWN the train objects and texture quality caused it to lock up sooner, within 30 seconds of switching to an outside view. Setting the world and train objects and texture quality all the way UP made it run longer, about 15 minutes before locking up. And the strange thing is that it actually improves the frame rate. I think the guys who wrote the program code were from Mars or something, I gave up trying to figure out the quirks in MSTS a long time ago. Anyway, it's a good interim solution, since he isn't about to drive any train for as long as 15 minutes without crashing or derailing (perfect engineer for Sodor Railways, since they never seem to have a day when something that started on the rails doesn't end up off of them), and the ultimate fix is to give him my computer, since that would give me the perfect excuse to get me a new one.
How does it feel to be a hero to hundreds of children you've never even met?

Aug-25-01, 01:13 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Thomas the tank engine ready to roll" I'm glad he liked it. I think the lock up has something to do with the Voodo card. My lowly computer is just a 400 K6 3 256MB viper770 32mb card and I have never locked up MSTS from outside views.john Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-25-01, 01:36 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Thomas the tank engine ready to roll" That's another potential could save some dough. I have a voodoo 4 4500 agp I bought about a year before they went out of business, but the darn thing is slower than the v3 pci card, and nowhere near as stable. I think I'll try my geforce 2 in his, and maybe get me a geforce 3. I never thought of upgrading his video, cuz he seems to actually LIKE jerky framerates. Anyway, after I cranked the quality sliders all the way up, he played it till he went to bed with no lockups - of course, I estimate the max amount of time he spent driving at mach .5 before crashing averaged about 3 minutes each trip.
