Aug-24-01, 03:54 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Where next?" I vote for Howard and then Evanston. My earliest rail-related memories are of riding the 'L' from Main St. (Evanston) to the loop in the early '60s - I'm looking forward to running that route. The current Evanston Express is one of the best rapid transit rides anywhere, though the Skokie Swift is a lot of fun too. I wish I could get back to Chicago more often than once a year or so.Now we just need someone to model the PCC 'L' cars, and for Kuju to add third rail capability to MSTS.Thanks, ccyko! Aug-24-01, 04:11 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Where next?" Doesn't TS have an option for third rails already? I swear I saw it in the Route Editor on the Properties menu...Perhaps you can answer this question, Chris - that black line (sometimes single, sometimes double) just in the middle of the tracks which appears to be catenary wires just some inches above the ground. Is this TS's way of depicting third rails...???As for what branch to create next...gee, I haven't been to Chicago ever, but I find the entire L1 network interesting...so I'll go for the easiest possible answer: "Up to you" !!!

Aug-24-01, 04:18 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Where next?" 3rd rail...somebody made some but they are refusing to release it to the public so for now i guess you will just have to set the catenary to the minimum setting... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-24-01, 08:02 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Where next?" To answer the third rail questions. 1. What is third rail?
A: A seperate rail 12" from the outside of the primary running rails, and 6" higher that provides DC electricity to power electric trains. On a third rail locomotive, the trucks are equiped with a "pick - up" that draws the electric current from the rail, and thus the other two rails and main wheelset(s) are used for a ground. Often used on rapid transit, and formerly on interurban railroads.2. Is the ground level catenary MSTS third rail?
A: No, actually the MSTS third rail option is disabled from the factory. The ground level catenary is just that, catenary placed at the lowest possible height MSTS will allow, 1/2 meter.3. Has someone successfully created third rail?
A: I have heard some talk, but all the talk I've heard has said that it was unsuccessful. I figured there would only be 2 ways of being able to place third rail, either a whole new set of track shapes, or a simalar set up to the catenary, where it is somewhat stiff, and is placed as a static to the track. I figured this is why KUJU diabled it, because of it's complexity, they probably ran out of time. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-24-01, 10:36 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Where next?" LAST EDITED ON Aug-24-01 AT 10:46 PM (EST)Yeah, look how fake the rails themselves look, no 3D quality at all. And the third rail would require an extra set of shape files to make it look right. Adding a third rail to the ties looks like (expletive deleted), and the shape and texture files for the rails I think are ACLEANTRACK2.ACE. I think, I'm not sure. As for the wire between the rails, this has been brought up before, Chris, so maybe you need to add a line to the readme telling the guys who are a little slow on the uptakes to go into the advanced display options and uncheck the box for "show overhead wires". The North Shore Limited would be difficult, and you would have to ignore all the nitpickers telling you it stopped in 63 and the dan ryan route wasn't built til later so they shouldn't be on the same route cuz they're not in the same time era, but who cares? Aside from the fussy little nitpickers, that is - myself, I don't care what they think, when I eventually get back to doing the galena division it's going to be more of an idealized image of what the route could have looked like if history had been kinder to it than any attempt at a precise fussy clone of one era. The North Shore ran on the trolley tracks in Milwaukee, it's own set of interurban tracks down to the Ravenswood, down to the loop and back on CTA trackage, and returned to Milwaukee by the same complicated process. The cars had regular stairs with a drop down trap to make a platform level with the El platforms, and used both trolley poles and third rail pickups.Jim Ward

Aug-25-01, 01:03 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Where next?" 4 track main line to Howard is finished. Debating on tidying up now and releasing, or to continue North through Evanston, then release. Whatever, it will be tomorrow. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
