Aug-25-01, 03:25 AM (EST) 14. "RE: NSWGR AD60 Garratt" Top effort !! What a great loco. Hauls 50 coal cars along the Maria Pass without even straining - just like a real one. Can't wait for the 38.Where is your Australian route Joseph ? Did you get DEM working ?PW Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-27-01, 04:57 PM (EST) 20. "RE: NSWGR AD60 Garratt - Terrific!" I put the Garratt on Marias Pass with the 50-car coal train, too. I disagree that it pulled it "without straining". Actually, it got down really strong on the grades, with a terrific exhaust sound, too. This consist & route is a challenge to drive. It takes continual adjustments of the regulator and reverser to maintain maximum boiler pressure and speed. The engine is working hard enough that any change in grade requires engine adjustments. At least, I think it's grades I keep adjusting for. I wish MSTS had something that showed the grade of the track. The profile map at the beginning of the activity is too broad to be of much use in knowing what the grade of the track you're running on is. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-24-01, 01:51 PM (EST) 5. "RE: NSWGR AD60 Garratt" Second that !I'm amazed just how powerful this locomotive is. I just made a consist with the Garratt in the lead and a mixture of U.S. and UK freight cars (in neutral liveries, where possible...when do we see some original Aussie ones?) behind. With this consist I went driving on the S&C line, and was impressed to see I had little trouble with maintaining a constant 50 mph. Also, the fact that (to the simulation) the Garratt is really two separate locos connected by a non-powered center section made for an interesting background sound. Essentially you hear TWO "Scotsmen" chugging away together, but slightly offset, which beautifully captures the fact that the Garratt has two complete, separate sets of cylinders, motion and drivers.John, if you're reading this, a VERY BIG "praise you" goes out to you. Not only have you created a really unique machine yourself, but opened up a door for all those loco modelers wishing to do a Mallet, Duplex or another "twin-engine" steam locomotive.Speaking of that, I'm really hot at this Challenger recently posted about on this board!

Aug-24-01, 08:55 PM (EST) 11. "RE: NSWGR AD60 Garratt" LAST EDITED ON Aug-24-01 AT 08:56 PM (EST)As the host of the AD60 Garratt, I'm pleased to read that you're all enjoying it.....those who have already got it, of course! The full credit goes to my compatriot, Joseph Spinella, for creating this beautiful piece of machinery and I can't let this post go without complimenting him on the excellent colouring.....I've seen these things in real life and that tinting he's used is brilliant.I'm sorry if you are experiencing delays in downloading it but keep trying...you'll either get there eventually or my ISP will have kittens and ask me to remove the link! Bruce.

Aug-24-01, 09:10 PM (EST) 12. "RE: NSWGR AD60 Garratt" Head's up, folks!I've unintentionally posted the ZIP without including the three default consists!! My error....not Josephs.Whilst this may not be a problem for experienced users of the Activity Editor, it may cause some grief for apprentices.I have created a separate ZIP for the three default consists referred to in the Readme file in the main zip. If you would like these deafult files the link can be found on the same page as that for the main file.Site address is:
http://users.cyberone.com.au/brucek/austrail/index.htmMy apologies for any inconvenience.Bruce

Aug-25-01, 09:50 AM (EST) 16. "RE: NSWGR AD60 Garratt" Great engine, a couple of problems though.
The texture on the right hand side of the cab is wrong, when looking from a distance the number reads backwards. In close up it's right.
The last driver on each engine seams to be outside of the frame floating freely in air only supported by the driving rod.
And then a question; will we be able to paint this fine machine for other imaginative routes?

Aug-25-01, 10:57 AM (EST) 17. "RE: NSWGR AD60 Garratt" I love it!!!! Another masterpiece from Joseph Spinella! Those guys from "down under" sure know how to build. I think it has something to due with the fact that they are walking upside-down...increases the blood flow to the brain, I suppose. Thanks, Joseph! Aug-25-01, 12:23 PM (EST) 18. "RE: NSWGR AD60 Garratt" Yeah, probably so ... I'm really looking forward to the Class 38 John has in the making. If she'll prove to be the same high quality, I'll be in "Engineer's Paradise" !

Aug-25-01, 05:47 PM (EST) 19. "RE: NSWGR AD60 Garratt" I have provided a replacement set of whistle sounds (two files, zipped, 241Kb in size). These have supposedly been sampled from a NSWGR Class 38 but I cannot vouch for that. They are, however, of better quality than the default whistle sounds. The zip file may be downloaded from the AustRail site, and is on the same page as the Garratt.Austrail is at:
http://users.cyberone.com.au/brucek/austrail/index.htmRegards,
Bruce.

I am running the garrett tender behind and steam only comes from the front set of cylinders, is this prototypical?Derek tm4@leder.com.au (another Ausie) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
