A discussion in another Thread I started prompted a lot of feedback about how some prefer to view what they are doing, running a train in a route. This is one of my Favourite Views and coupled with the Ctrl-Shift-9 Keys Combo and using the Right-Mouse Button the Scenario can be stunning ! What is your Favourite View ?O t t oViewing Preferences – image 1

RE: Viewing Preferences

Personally, really like the outside,(# 2), view.
Which means I really like looking at the scenary and the trains.
Just like my londg ago Lionel and 'N' Gauge layouts.Speaking of which, had the opportunity to vist the San Diego Railroad Modelers Layouts at Balboa Park.
Stunning work -
Particularly interesting was the San Diego & Arizona route, modeled in both 'N' and 'HO' gauges, each of which featured the Carrizo Gorge trestle, each one from a different viewpoint.
The models were exquisitely done, and so is Mark D.'s upload to the File library.
Thanks

RE: Viewing Preferences

What is your Favourite View ?Cabview mode.
90% of my running would be in the various views available from the cab.The other 10% would be in the modified "Yard" view (key &7) and is used primarily to take screenshots, because of its flexibility.Bruce.

RE: Viewing Preferences

Yes Bruce, looks like you are a real Engine Driver and like to drive your locos like you are actually sitting in one ! I bet you also got the RAILDRIVER and like to see the Cab controls respond ! I use a mixture, being a "Sightseer" and Tracks Freak. Mostly outside views like the one above. I suppose I inherited that from my Model Railways days ? I am waiting for the MSTS which lets me change Cabs in the Loco I am driving and then you will see me inside Cabs more often too, especially when switching and making up trains !Whichever, one thing is sure, there is something for every Train Simmer in MSTS ! Take Care, O t t o.

RE: Viewing Preferences

i like to watch the signals drop as i pass them. view 2 set to the area just behind the 2nd loco - usually my trains have 2 or 3 on the headend. the elevation is about the roof line and on the right side of the train about 3 feet away. great for watching the CPL's fall on Sand Patch. i usually duck my head in the lead loco for tunnels and just to get a feeling of the health of the train. i have started to turn off the heads up now that i have learned the routes i run. the only problem is not knowing were the slow orders are and having to react to those - if they were listed in the train orders on all activities, i could do a fine job.

Viewing Preferences – image 2

Depends, some days I play engineer and spend most of the trip in the cab or headout view, some days I just wanna foam, so I spend the trip mostly in the 2, 4 or 7 outside views.Chris Denbow - Baltimore, MD

RE: Viewing Preferences

I am out of the cab 99% of the time.I usually sit right above the center line, a car or two behind the last loco in the lashup.-Jeff

RE: Viewing Preferences

I do that a lot too, Jeff. The only problem with that is that I keep banging my head on bridges and tunnel entrances and the exhaust fumes from the engines is choking me ! O t t o

RE: Viewing Preferences

Otto,I use the same outside, left-side view you do, except I move up and back a bit, better able to see some of things coming up. I feel its almost like driving a car.Ted

RE: Viewing Preferences

So do I, Ted !This view I have shown I use mostly with Steam Locos so that I can watch the motion of the valve gears and places where engines cross intricate Switches layouts. That's how I noticed some Back-to-Back twin sets turning their bogies the wrong way in curves and others, their wheels sinking into the rails ! What a lot of fun though, whatever View one uses. Can't do that being a driver or passenger in a real train ! Take Care, O t t o.

RE: Viewing Preferences

Hi Otto,The way I see it, it's supposed to be a simulator. This means that it needs to have as accurate a cab as possible, and run through as realistic environment as possible. I’m on record at UKTS for being very critical of routes that have poor or limited scenery. On the other hand if you look at the photo realistic cab views that are available in many international models now you have to marvel at how far we’ve come since the base software.Bottom line is that the beauty of Train Sim is that you can “drive it”, “watch it go by” or even “fly along behind or in front of it”.Beats me why anyone would have any preference. You can do the lot!Geoff Brown
