RE: I would like to know

It's an SD-9 with it's nose chopped down. See the air tanks on the roof behind the cab? That's the give-away...JBD

Thanks Jim!Is there some site you can go to that kind of shows all the different locomotives? I used to have the book " A Diesel Spotters Guide" but somewhere along the way in my moves I have lost it.Yours in Railroading,

RE: I would like to know

It appears to be a heavily modified SD-40 (not an Sd-40-2). It is unusual because of the roof mounted air tanks done to allow a larger fuel tank, doesn;t have the big porches of an SD 40-2 either. The grills in the hood side at the radiators are different from most and so are two of the fans. It could be one that a rebuilder lowered the horsepower using the 6 wheel trucks for weight distribution on secondary trackage like where it was located.

RE: I would like to know

Would there be some markings on the side that would tell. I am heading down that way again this weekend. It is parked fairly close to the highway. I thought maybe this time if I could stop and get a closer look! The last time it kind of caught my eye at the last minute. It is not always there tho . When I have been thru on other occasions it wasn't there.Yours in Railroading,

Jerry

RE: I would like to know

Well, being an old "Q" man, I think I have the answer, as the Q rebuilt some units just like that one; in fact, BN might have sold it to them. What it is is a rebuilt SD24, as the Q put the air tanks on top to give additional fuel capacity to the fuel tanks. Also, just behind the cab on the fireman's side, you see 2 sets of door louvers with a solid panel in between. This was where the turbocharger bubble was on the side; the solid panel was put there when it was removed. On some of the units, BN removed the air tanks from the top, leaving a easily identifiable "notch" on the roof behind the cab.So, in essence, they turned the SD24's into high horsepower SD9's. Now most of them remained as high hoods, but I think a couple were chop nosed.

Click to send message via ICQ

That was a railway in Wisconsin that had former C&NW trackage.

We need more Southern Ry and N&W stuff on train-sim,.

>isn't a web site for the "Floyd Valley Grain". To be honest with you, I can't remember. I did a search on Google for "Floyd Valley Grain" and it was one of the results. The first result was the BNSF's webiste page of grain elevator's they serve, with the FVG elevator at Hinton, IA being one of them.Ah, found it: http://www.trainweb.org/emdloco/25500.htmThe page says that it's FGV 6623, but they obviously haven't renumbered it yet (the other 2 FGV units wear a 66xx number). The WSOR Yahoo! group confirms that FGV 1801 is in fact ex-WSOR 1801, so all the info fits.Chris Denbow - Baltimore, MD
