Is there a way to edit a file in the ENG file that makes the horn / bell of a engine louder? It would seem there should be as some engines have loud horns, others do not. Chris Bogley

RE: Making horns louder

Chris,I think the only way to do this is to identify the ???horn.wav of a Loco from it's .sms file and increase it's volume with a Sound Editor.I believe WIN-XP has such a function. I use a FREEWARE one I downloaded yonks ago.But if it is one shared by other Locos then it will make their horns louder too ! O t t o

RE: Making horns louder

Chris,if you are really persistent about doing this then one option would be to give that ????horn.wav a Name specific to that Loco, edit the Loco's .sms file to record the changed name and turn up the Volume of the newly named sound file with a Sound Editor. A lot of work but satisfying if it gives you what you want !What I want right now is a bag full of Krispy-Kreme Dough Nuts ! O t t o

RE: Making horns louder

Chris:
Two ways to increase volume.
1. Go to the cab & eng sms files and look for the horn references.
You shouls see a line something like this:
Priority ( 6 )
Triggers ( 3
Discrete_Trigger ( 8 SetStreamVolume ( 0.75 ) )You can reset the volume stream to a max of 1.0, this is the highest volume available in MSTS. Set it higher and it will still only play at 1.02. You can use the Windows Sound Recorder to increase volume by 25%. However, you stand a chance of losing or distorting your higher frequency peaks.Hope this helps,Cyndi

Cyndi,
That line is rarely used in sms files and is quite common for it not to be found in them. However, it is something to look for if you find the volume too low for your liking. However, using the Sound Recorder, as you suggested, is the easiest way to change the amplitude of the horn wav to better suit your tastes. Just be sure you don't increase the volume so much that you distort the wav. Regards,

RE: Making horns louder

Some (most?) .sms files have more than one entry for the horn sound. Would I be correct in assuming that more than one horn entry means the horn file is played more than one time, therefore amplifying the volume?A shot in the dark wild guess.....Making horns louder – image 3Dave Reage - Beta Tester

RE: Making horns louder

No. If you look closely at the sms file you will see that each horn ref is in a different scalability group. As you go from SL 1 to 3 to 5 the total number of streams drop off. Some wavs like the horn and bell have to be in all groups to be heard when activated since activation can take place at any time. Cyndi

RE: Making horns louder

I took a look through my eng files and only about 30% of them have the volume triggers originally. I added it to about another 10% to help rectify low volume of some items. In some cases I added the line to lower volume of items.@Otto: Just sounds <pun intended> like I know what I'm talking about, you guys have nothing to worry about. When Annabelle comes back we will have you guys outnumbered again. Cymdi

The best thing to do, I think, would be to just download Goldwave (from www.goldwave.com) and just load it into the program, and manually change the volume to however loud you want. Save it, and then load up MSTS.--The FBL Commuter Edition!!!!!!---You can never have too much inner beauty. Or socks.

RE: Making horns louder

I have found from experience particularly when I was trying to get my
original ThunderCrack module much louder without distorting was to simply put a 2 in instead of the 1 and replace the lower scalability Number with a higher one which had to be 3 in the sms file concerned.Try this as an experiment and you'll find you will get louder volume without distortion.Another trick is for making sound objects in a route louder by doing the following:1. either duplicate the green speaker within close proximity to one another, OR2. Keep on klicking on the green speaker until you get the desired volume level (you might suffer a loss of clarity if you do this too much).Mike Michael Sinclair
