Aug-22-01, 08:53 PM (EST) "Adding new engines" I have downloaded several different locomotives to use and created a new folder in the trainsets directory and unzipped all files there and copied whatever folders the readme said to do. However, when going into the consist editor that loco isnt even listed as one of the choices. I have seen several that I would like to try but so far been unsuccessful. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-22-01, 10:01 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Adding new engines" This is a tough one to answer blindly like this...1.) Each engine requires a ".s" and ".sd" file named the same way it is.2.) Each engine needs a unique name from other engines of it's type.3.) The names inside the engine also have to match.4.) At the bottom of the engine file is a unique 'NAME' that will appear in the Trainsim consist editor. Whatever is between the quotes is what appears in the consist name, so be unique, or more than one engine will have the same name in the editor. You may have 6 different engines labeled GP-38 for instance...5.) Look in the 'diesel' for diesels, 'steam' for steamers, and 'electric' for electrics. Look in 'passenger' for passenger cars, and 'freight' for freightcars. NOTE: Sometimes a locomotive or cars will appear under more than one category, and that could also be why some appear to be missing. My guess is that you have a problem with either 4 or 5 affecting appearance in the editor. When digging inside most of the trainsim files use Wordpad and save all changes you make as UNICODE text type documents.Stevealex Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-23-01, 04:49 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Adding new engines" Have you added the engine with the "activities editor"? Unless you do, and add a consist to it, it won't show up. There are tutorials posted on this forum explaining the whole involved process.Too bad that you cannot change engines anytime you want like you can change airplanes in Flight Sim 2K. This can be done even in midflight by simply selecting the aircraft you want from the menu......Smokeyjoe Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-26-01, 05:32 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Adding new engines" I HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS ONCE.SOME LOCO'S WORK FINE,SOME TAKE ALOT MORE FANNESS TO GET THEM TO SHOW UP IN THE CONSIST EDITOR.LATELY I HAVE MADE SEPERATE "NEW" FOLDERS IN "MY DOCUMENTS"AND ZIP ALL THE CONTENTS INTO A "NEW" FOLDER,THEN COPY THE REQUIRED FILES INTO THAT FOLDER.THEN TURN AROUND AND COPY THEM TO "TRAINSET" DIRECTORY.NOT ALL DOWNLOADS ARE THE SAME.READ THE "READ ME"FILE BEFORE DOWNLOAD.USAULLY IF THEY DON'T SHOW UP IN THE EDITOR(WORD FORM,OR GIF PICTURE)IT'S USAULLY BECAUSE THERE IS A FILE MISSING,OR NOT NAMED CORRECTLY.WHICH MEANS YOU HAVE TO GO TO THAT FOLDER AND LOOK AT IT'S CONTENTS TO SEE WHAT IS MISSING.LOL Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-27-01, 01:36 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Adding new engines" May I also suggest using the very good alias3.zip , a download available in the files section of this site.Along with the .eng .ace .s and .sd files needed to correctly define an engine, you also need the sound and cabview folders that go with that type engine.
These two folders and their contents total between 12 to 15 megabytes for EACH engine. What ALIAS3 does is put 1 file in the cabview folder and two files in the sound folder totaling about 100 kilobytes, saving tons of hard drive space.
These 3 alias files, at the start of the sim activity, load the needed files in from the default engines sound and cabview folders.
Alias3 does not change or overwrite anything in the sim.
It works like a charm with each new engine I have added taking up about 3 megabytes of hard drive space instead of 15 megabytes.Of course, on a completly new engine design with cabviews and sounds different from any of the original Micro$oft default engines, you obviously need the unique sound and cabview files that go with it.
This only works with downloaded engines that use the default cabview and sounds. ie; a re-skinned GP-38 for instance.Very easy to use, just copy the necessary cabview and sound folders from the folder where you have the alias3 folders stored and your ready to roll.I have downloaded about 10 engines and use Alias3 for all of them and it works perfectly, a 150 megabyte saving.
