When I start a train in MSTS either default or add-on, I can hear the engine sounds of the head unit on the internal view, but when I switch to the external views, all I hear is the trailing engines idleing behind it and there's no sound coming form the head unit.
If I'm for example in "External View 2" and switch the spotlight to the second or third engine "Ctrl + Right Arrow keys" then the sounds of the head engine come alive, but then the idle sounds of the second or third engine dissapear!
If I'm in the "External View 4/Ride By View" The head unit sounds really low, there's just a faint engine sound muffled by the other idleing engines. If I switch the spotlight just like in the other views explained above, then it sounds ok.
I tried running a single engine by itself and there are no sound coming from it either, except for the internal view!
Anyone knows how to fix this?

RE: no engine sound or low engine sound on head engine.

You need to use a sms file that is for AI engines to get the correct sounds. The trigger for AI engines is different. If you are using a regular engine it will not play the correct sounds. If you have the UP pack from Dekosoft, you can find many AI eng files in my fourm. they will play the correct sounds.Kevin Arceneaux

Well, I'm not sure I follow... but I forgot to add that the latest test I did before I posted was done with the default Dash 9 engine/consist and before it used to play without issues.

I did what you said, but it didn't help, altho it did make some changes in sound output. Is MSTS compatible with 5.1 speakers?
I just got back into the game and I did a speaker upgrade before I started playing again. I'm running the Logitech Z-640 5.1 speakers on a SB Live 5.1.
When I swicth the sound properties on windows to "Stereo Headphones" all the sounds play normally...

OK you need to go back and read your Logitech manuals...
If Stereo Headphones work properly then you either have the new speakers hooked up "wrong" (My guess) or the default speaker selection in windows was not updated to allow the Logitechs to operate properly wrong.... Chuck Schneider

>You meant in Windows, rite? MSTS as well. It is in the options part.

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

RE: no engine sound or low engine sound on head engine.

Thank you all for your help. Problem Fixed!
There's a button named "matrix" on my speakers which I'm not sure what it does, but the Instructions Manual calls for it to be ON when using 5.1 sound cards.
After giving some thought about the changes in sound between the Headphones and Speakers, I figured it must be the speakers that were messing up.
When chucksc mentioned about going back to the instructions book, I remembered. So, I went ahead and turned the "matrix" OFF and presto, sounds good!
Thanks again for all your help guys
