I have posted a new version of RR today. New features:-
1. .REF file editor, will allow you to sort on any field, usually Class, so you can keep all your Buildings together etc.2. Consist Viewer in full colour - Does not allow consist editing, but at least you can go through your Consist folder and see what everything is.3. Fixed the Check Route and Compact Route so that RR does not give spurious errors about missing Terrtex files which are not really missing.4. Includes Paul Gausden's new trainlib.ocx which has allowed me to build his Shape File Viewer into RR. Also includes Paul's new compression code which will even compress .ace files in DXT1 format.Mike

RE: Route-Riter v5.0.40

Hi, Mike. I'm still getting strange errors when running Route Riter. I completely uninstalled it (again) and then installed the new version in the file library. At first it asked for the makeace and FFEDIT stuff to be moved to the Route_Riter/utils folder, so I did that. Then I got the Run Time Error 457 (I think it was), which is what I was getting with the older versions. So I uninstalled again, and installed to the default folder (Program Files\Route_Riter). This time it ran OK for about 5 minutes, then I got a Run Time 380 "Invalid property value" error and the program closes. This has happened the 3x I have opened the program and Route Riter has not worked successfully. When I first e-mailed you, I also had a corrupted MSTS file and MSTS would not load. However, I have since fixed that problem, so the error must be somewhere else. Any ideas?

RE: Route-Riter v5.0.40

If RR expected makeace and ffeditc stuff to be in the Route_Riter\Utils folder, then this is because your Registry has a corrupt entry for Route_Riter.RR expects these items to be in the MSTS path\Utils folder, so it appears your RR registry settings for MSTS Path are pointing to the RR folder rather than the MSTS folder.Run regedit from the Start button and go to:-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program SettingsUnder this Key you should see Route_Riter – Right click on Route_Riter and select DeleteNext time you run RR all should be wellNote: As an alternative to the above, under Route_Riter you will see an entry MainPath, you can alter this to your MSTS path, i.e. c:\program files\microsoft games\Train Simulator
if you have a Default MSTS setup, or wherever you have installed MSTS.

RE: Route-Riter v5.0.40

So can I install RR into the UTILS folder under the Train Simulator folder rather than keep the default install into the Program Files folder? I've been playing with it a little more and was able to fool around with some of the other buttons, but if I play with the options in the Route Utils button, I get Run Time errors.

RE: Route-Riter v5.0.40

You can install RR anywhere, but I would not recommend placing it in the MSTS folder as that is used by MSTS for it's own purposes.Mike

RE: Route-Riter v5.0.40

Clayton, I have E drive completely devoted to MSTS. All of my extra utilities, ie route riter, bbedit, etc. I have in the E drive under their own folder names, then of course I have the game under Microsoft Games....etc etc.. I downloaded the new route riter and had no problems with it finding my game files, etc. Still trying to figure why you are getting these errors and I am with Mike that perhaps it is in your registry, and not necessarily the route riter program but some of the other programs it needs to run correctly. Try his suggestion and if that doesn't solve it post the locations of your various files and maybe we can pin the cause down.TimWestern Maryland Railroad

RE: Route-Riter v5.0.40

Hi Stumbl,I set the limit within RR of 200 items, so a consist of over 200 wagons might give you that error. However trying to load such a consist would take a long time and take a long time to turn using the mouse. If this is the case though, let me know how many wagons you have in your consist? I can change it to something unlikely to be exceeded.Mike

It isn't the limit you set unfortunately... as it happens with consists of 50 or less.
Do all of the registry settings have the name "route_riter" in them?
I have read somewhere that 380 could be a registry problem.
For your info.RR uninstalled completely, manually removing "route_riter" from the registry. Could this be a problem from previous installations of the shape file viewer ( I am assuming that is related to the consist viewer )
as an example this happens with the default ( I think ) "2D9's 20 intermodal.com ( the name is only close. )XP pro , updated
athlon XP 2500 ( which really runs at 1.8Ghz )
512 meg's of 3200 DDR ram
geforce 5600 video (128 meg)
sb live gamer sound
plenty of room on the hard drive.
account has administrative privelagesonly thing nonstandard about my msts install is that it is on the "E" drive "I do what my Rice Krispies tell me to do"

RE: Route-Riter v5.0.40

I also have Shape File Viewer installed independently. Do I need to uninstall it for Route Riter to work correctly?

RE: Route-Riter v5.0.40

LAST EDITED ON Mar-22-04 AT 06:52 PM (EST)

The program works great for me though I need help with something related to it.
When using the .ref editor on any route .ref file but the route I`m building, it works fine.
Whe I tried to load the .ref from my route, it gives me the message,
"BHCRR.ref" is already in text format.
if you click on OK it gives the following error,
Run-time error 5 Invalid procedure call or argument. What have I done differently to my .ref file that causes this.
(And just when you think you know everything.)Any help greatly appreciated. Fabulous upgrade to a Fine program Mike Simpson. Good Job!Edited for Spelling

RE: Route-Riter v5.0.40

Check if your .ref file is in ASCII rather than Unicode format? RR has an ASCII to Unicode converter under MSTS Utils, this will fix it if this is the case. You can check if the file is in the wrong format by selecting the .ref file in RR, and clicking the Edit Unicode button under MSTS Utils - If it is not Unicode, you will be advised.Mike

RE: Route-Riter v5.0.40

Heya Mike, thanks for the quick response.
I did what you suggested.
1) Checked the .ref file with the edit unicode function in RR and
sure enough, it said it was not a unicode file.2) Ran it thru the ASCII to Unicode conversion.3) Tried to open it with the .REF editor in RR and it dropped the first error,(File is in text format ect.) but still gave me the "Run-time error 5. invalid procedure call or argument" error, then exits RR4) fired up RR again and tried to load .ref file into .REF editor and now I`m back to BOTH original errors. (Twilight Zone Stuff here.) As I said before, this only happens with the route I`m building. I`ve tried it on a lot of other route .refs and it works fine.
When I have edited my .ref file in the past, when adding objects and so on, I`ve always used Wordpad. I`ve always thought this was the correct editor to use. Have I been wrong all this time about that?
Still clueless but still having fun

> Still clueless but still having fun Can only answer this question for you, unfortunately, but no, you are not incorrect. Wordpad will save the file in unicode format but you must tell it to do so. Otherwise it will save it, normally, in regular ASCII text. That could be why you were getting that error. If you are using Windows XP you can use regular Notepad to do this as well and save it as unicode. But you must tell them to do this.Glad you are having fun though! That's the important thing. And there is always someone out here who can give you the right answer to any question. That is what is nice as well. Route Riter is getting better all the time and I appreciate the efforts that Mike has put into it.Sorry I can't answer the other questions but I am sure Mike can.Tim

RE: Route-Riter v5.0.40

As RR is apparently opening all your other .ref files OK, I would suspect there must be an error in your .ref file. This can be something as simple as a missing bracket - Unfortunately .ref files must be completely correct or they do not work, a single extra or missing bracket in the whole thing can cause problems. If you send me your .ref file as an attachment to an email to
virtualtrains@optushome.com.auI will have a look at it for you. Anything else would just be guesswork.Mike

RE: Route-Riter v5.0.40

Hi Barry,Thanks for sending me your .ref file, I have returned it along with a new .exe file for RR. There was a bug in RR - your .ref file had a Description of Rectangluar_Shadow - RR searches for Shadow as one of the key words in a .ref file and was getting confused. I have fixed this. I will post a new .exe for download on my Home Page http://members.optusnet.com.au/virtualtrains
some time later this week as I have had a few other suggestions which I hope to incorporate as well.Mike
