Aug-22-01, 11:27 AM (EST) "Marias v2 derail in Whitefish yard " I have been using a freight activity David Street with no problems and I must say it is a great effort and makes MSTS much more realistic. Nothing in the canned package comes close. Yesterday I decided to load Marias V2 which is also a great improvement. But of course problems came up. I now derail for no reason at all at Whitefish yard minding my own business. Any thaughts????????? Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-22-01, 05:34 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Marias v2 derail in Whitefish yard " Remember Marias V2.0 is a beta version so we travel at our own risk. The author did a great job, love the new signals, proper crossings and sounds as well at the new auto traffic and such. But there is a problem. New additional signals were added, and they cause the error you are getting. When you start out, just move a head a little with just the loco, then use view to look around while sitting there. You will see an AI yard job come out of a siding, come to the 'New' signal at the main switch and stop. This sets up two more AI yard jobs that will cause a rear end to happen. Normally the first yard job would stop then reverse back into the yard. But the new signal keeps this from happening. This is also part of the problem with several other add-on activities, where you can not get back to your train after dropping or picking up cars on a siding. I am no signal expert at all, but I do not think most of these added signals should be there. So I am working at keeping most of the orginal authors work, but removing the added signals. This should allow it to be more like the orginal Marias and have less problems. But at the same time keeping all the added fixes, mile markers, new signal heads, etc.Don Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Marias v2 derail in Whitefish yard " The author of Marias v2 told me he was going to do some revisions when he returned from vacation (and I'm not sure when that is, in the meantime it has had over 900 downloads). He didn't realize how some of the things he changed and added had an impact on activities. It does have a nice look and feel, but there are too many problems the way it is.Bob Lloyd

Go to www.bnsf-ttc.com/bnsftime/
READ BNSF's rules and if you agree download and print out "SIGNAL ASPECTS AND INDICATIONS" document.
These signals ARE the ones used on Marias Pass and will show the NEW white ( LUNAR ) signal that isn't on the regular MSTS.Have a good one.

Aug-24-01, 09:16 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Marias v2 derail in Whitefish yard " Alfred,Yes the signals are the proper ones for the most part. There should actually be a few more, and some multi heads on signle posts, etc.But the problem is the placement. I doubt if they have them in the yard leads as V2.0 has. And the ones around the Columbia Falls that have been added keep most of the current activities from working that use this area.I have just been playing around with it, and running all the add-on actvities I have and seeing what new signal placements are causing the problems. Then seeing if different types, permissive, etc will allow them to work. So far as I have been able to figure out, most will not work no matter what type.So unless we are very careful where we add new signals, not the type such as the proper BNSF ones, just where we put them, especially new aspects where there were none in the orginal MSTS, then we either endup with activities that will not work properly or period. Or Activity authors will have to write multi activies for both the orginal Marias and for Marias V2.0.This is why I think, IMHO it would be best at least for now, to convert to the proper BNSF signals, but only the orginal ones with out adding additional heads where there were none in the orginal. As long as they are changed one on one with the proper type, then an activity written for either version, Marias orginal or V2.0 would work together. And even along these lines I am finding as long as the yard and siding signals are removed from V2.0, the orginal has none. We can leave the added ones for the main line crossovers, which I would think should be there anyways, but again the orginal has several areas where the main line crossovers are not signaled. But so for adding these has shown no impact on previous Activities. My guess is the activites have to look at these crossovers as being signaled even though in the orginal some are not, but most are.Don Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-22-01, 05:37 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Marias v2 derail in Whitefish yard " After installing the so called version 2, I had a lot of problems. I then emailed the creator of this version and discovered that he did not know how activities were constructed or how they worked, placed hand throw switches under signal control, removed some stations and moved other stations to different locations not realizing how they fit into the scheme of things. He also moved the location of some signals.I then tried to remove that version and reinstall the MSTS original version. Didn't work. I ended up saving my add-ons to a different file, uninstalling MSTS, deleting all related files and doing a clean reinstall of the entire program. That is the only way I got back to business. The fellow who made the "Manual Marias Pass" (a version with all manual swithces) had the good sense to instruct us to install it as a different route, not changing any files on the original. That was the smart way to do this. I blame myself for having to go through all of this trouble, I should have known better, and for sure, do now. A hard lesson, but ultimately worth it.Bob Lloyd

"RE: Marias v2 derail in Whitefish yard " Hard lession for me too - I take it personally when something doesn't work and spent about 5 hours trying different things - waste of time. I will definately save a separate route next time. Can any explain how to do that???Steve Olney

>Steve Olney Steve,I don't know how to do that, but the author of "Manual Marias Pass" either renamed the files or caused his program to call itself something like "Manual Marias Pass" so it wouldn't duplicate the Marias Pass you already have. The only suggestion I might have is to save your original Marias Pass to a "Temporary" folder on your hard drive, then install the replacement and see how it works. If it does not work, delete the new one and replace it with the saved one. Still might be a little dicey. The best fix is for future editions of a converted route to follow the lead of "Manual Marias Pass." That guy really thought it through. No problems installing and no problems uninstalling, thanks to his forethought.Since I am presently working on several Activities for upload, I just use the standard MSTS Routes in order to save confusion and to make sure that everyone can use the activity. A lot of people don't have the time or inclination to download a large route file.Same thing with add-on locomotives and cars. I use the standard issue MSTS. Although, just for fun, I use a lot of add-ons when I'm playing an activity for my own pleasure. I do the same thing with activities I download - replace consists with add-on stuff. The look and feel makes it worth the trouble, at least to me.Bob Lloyd
