RE: rar files

LAST EDITED ON Feb-17-04 AT 04:02 AM (EST)

Rar files are very popular, because of the ease at which they can be spanned (Muliple part archives). I don't personally think that Winzip's spanning is that tricky, but as can be seen on this board many people find it confusing. Example: Marceline Sub Route.Winrar is obviously a good choice for rar files, but I sort of like Picozip. It handles all sorts of compression extensions, and has one great feature I have not found in many other "zip" applications; Batch Files. Essentially you can tell it to unzip a whole folder to some location, and so forth. With Winzip, it has to open a new "window" for each item extracted. Pico zip just extracts them where you want without any fuss.I have also tried Powerzip and power archiver. Both handle lots of extensions and so forth, but I found Pico to be faster and less buggy. Although Powerzip DOES allow for unzipping of multiple files easily too. (I think it is kind of slow though and the interface is pretty blah)Check it out here if you are interested:http://www.picozip.com/features.htmlPeace,MFOSPs. I am in no way am affiliated with these folks. They just make a pretty nice product and it will handle most, if not all, of your files compression needs.

RE: rar files

Guess I will put my two cents in. Have been using winrar for three years now and would never use another compression program. It is very easy to use, it will unzip zip and ace files and it will easily put the files where you want them. Have used winace and don't find it any easier. Have not used the others mentioned but for my money's worth, winrar is the best. Of course no two people ever agree on anything. Stick with winrar, it is the most downloaded compression utility on the internet. Ranger (Tim)Western Maryland Railroad

RE: rar files

I'm going to go with Tim and say that WinRAR beats them all for me. One thing I like is that if you drag a file out of an archive it doesn't restore the whole directory tree which WinACE does.

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

RE: rar files

By the way Bob if the rar files are multipart with a executable part the rar files are read in automaticaly with out needing a RAR utility. Most of the Italian route I have d/l'd are of this type. Just put the executable file and the rar's in the same temp folder and double click the executable icon. DO NOT unpack the RAR files first. However there are also standalone RAR files on the European DL and these do require the utility. I like WinRAR and it is available for a free trial. Hope this helps.Be Seeing you.
